Bad attitudes fueled by drugs and alcohol is one way and likely most common.
Asking why people like the scammers exist is answered by the analogy of why locks are needed to keep honest people, honest.

These scams happen almost daily around here.
Our local paper has a section where they post all the calls for law enforcement.
Itā€™s both funny and sad.
Many calls for ā€œI heard a noiseā€ ā€œstrange car parked on my streetā€ and tons of Karen calls.
My favorite was about a woman who called police because ā€œSomeone broke in and stole my kitchen scissors, againā€
But sadly the seniors who get scammed seem to happen way too often.
My own mom (90 years old) needs constant supervision over her email. I donā€™t think sheā€™s been scammed yet, but I also doubt she would admit it.

Are you referring to the con-scamming perpetrator, or the gullible victim who is obviously in need of a financial custodian ?
Wow...you would not believe how many folks are getting attacked successfully and unfortunately these fraudsters target elderly people who may be a bit more trusting and not as tech savvy. I see it daily. This was a pretty rudimentary attack/threat actor but let me tell you all it takes is one click, or one fake multi factor prompt answered and you too can be fleeced.

Not just The elderly. Buddy got scammed for 40,000 bucks. They knew what when and where, and stepped in it exactly the right minute.

This woman lied her ass off.
It's all on her.

How many of the inmates have withdrawn large amounts of cash?
Boats, trucks, motorhomes, side by sides. Bookers and flow?

Did the bank teller ask what you're going to do with the cash? Oh my gawd, so intrusive, I know.

She lied her ass off on what she was going to do.

It's standard protocol for the teller to ask, at least at the banking institutions that I've dealt with.

Next question? Do you want a customer that lies her ass off about something like this?
I wouldn't.

The bank should fire the customer.

It happens more than you think it would/should.

This isn't a 'click' and your money is gone type of thing.

I continually tell my 84 year old mother-in-law not to open texts or emails from unknown sources, as in "DON'T click on it at all!" Same thing with phone calls. She is a typical elderly person that watches local TV news three times a day, gets bombarded with junk mail, and is a perfect mark for predators.

I plead with her not to buy anything from junk mail senders like "Vermont Country Store." She has spent hundreds of dollars on crap merchandise that has enhanced photos and alluring descriptions in the catalogs they send. She doesn't understand that every time she buys something, her name and address is sold to dozens, if not hundreds, of mailing lists.

I'm always aware of the possibility she could be scammed, and often remind her about text, online, and phone thieves.

I would not call a 71 year old, non tech savvy women, a POS.
I wouldn't either, and I do apologize for the inference that you would.

This was however, in no way technical, it was a straight out phone scam and any adult in today's world with even an occasional ear to the news, should be aware of these and similar scams.
Of course we both know, if the population was more wary, these scammers wouldn't find marks as easily as they seem to.

I have such a neighbor woman, and despite mine, her husbands, and other family trying desperately to teach and warn her what NOT TO DO, she invariable does it anyway and has cost them accordingly.
