Chase Sapphire Preferred for a small fee or Chase Sapphire Reserve if you don't mind a bigger fee, the points are prob the most versatile. You'll have a 100K chase points before you know it, especially if you spend the needed amount for the sign-up bonus.

I have a few. Costco for shopping N/C per year.
A Southwest card $69 per year. I knew we had a family trip coming up loaded enough points to fly 2 of us RT Florida and 4 RT from Detroit. to Puerto Rico for 10 days. 2 free pieces of luggage per person.

Delta Amex Platinum $250 per year. Includes one free companion ticket. Pretty easy to get Medallion status. Gets you free upgrades, not easy to get though. Only once this year was upgraded to First class. Your seat choices are great. Exit row is available.N/C

With layover if you want with platinum card can buy your way into Delta Skyclub...$49 I think. Try and go to a Airport bar/restraunt and have a few drinks and food for $50. Clean bathrooms, comfortable chairs, endless supply of varying food items both hot and cold, beer, wine and booze. Snacks and such

Good info; thanks. I'm not sure if anyone else is doing this, but I'll share anyway since it has not been brought up.

When we hit the road and moved into our RV full time we wanted to automate as much bill paying as possible. I did not want a bill to go past due because the mail could not find us or was delayed.

Every bill is automated except the credit card. The credit card also gives us a cash flow cushion if we need it in an emergency. Now the only household bill payments we need to do is the single digital transfer for the credit card, which gets paid off each month. This strategy also ramped up our travel points. Now that we are no longer traveling full time in a ticking time bomb RV we will keep doing this and kick ourselves for not doing it sooner.

Yes, you need to still pay attention to your budget, but you don't do non-value-added work paying bills each month. It takes only minutes and can be done anywhere you have an internet connection.

I only have two credit cards and admittedly, know little to nothing about credit cards.

They’re both capital one cards. But I just realized (because I never read the fine print) when I was looking at a recent bill, one of them is now at 27% interest and they don’t just charge the interest on your payment, it accrues on any balance! Holy rape hotline Batman. Anyway, I want to cancel that one and get a basic card to replace it. I like to have one and I like the wife to have one in case we need em.

So, what’s the card to get. I guess I could be cool with airline points or cash back or whatever but really, I don’t need gimmicks, I just need an average to good rate card that isn’t gonna straight fuck me or quietly jump up in a couple years.

Oh, my credit score is 800 if that matters. And it’s going up from what I see so that’s cool.

What says the masses?
It depends on what you are looking for. I use Amex Platinum for most of my CC purchases. Top notch customer service if you ever have an issue with a merchant over a charge.

I'm assuming you pay off your cards every month (because of your credit score), and if that's the case, then interest rates shouldn't matter. If you are using it for biz or are carrying a balance, then consider a bank line of credit or HELOC with more reasonable terms than a credit card; bank terms will likely outweigh card rewards if you carry a balance.

I use a Hilton Amex, it's the only card I've ever paid a fee for (and there's a free version as well...) and I got hooked on being a Hilton Diamond member when I traveled a lot and I get a free night or two for the annual fee (hello Waldorf...!). My brother had a GM card for a long time and saved thousands on a new car. My main card before the Hilton Amex was Citi Thank You Rewards, which accrues points that I've used to buy hotels/air, a BBQ, tablets, gift cards, etc...

Moral of the story is that the best card is whatever card aligns with you and your goals and your place in life, and if you can't find one that specifically aligns like a Hilton or GM, then get a generic one with at least some kind of reward for spending like cash back or catalog points...

I’ve stated several times I don’t buy into that philosophy at all. Why would you use your principal when you can make money work for you while using someone else’s money?
Don’t take anything I say here too seriously, I’m just here to have fun. (well, most of the time). 👍🏽😊

Credit cards are a tool. Use the one that makes you the most based on your spending habits and lifestyle.

For me its cash back on purchases; I use a card for everything I can and pay the statement balance when due. The one with the best % for the purchase gets used although I have neen known to grab the wrong one.

This thread is not Dave Ramsey approved!🤣

I’ve never read any of his stuff, but from what I’ve heard it’s designed for people that aren’t financially savvy and can’t handle leverage/credit?

Because you are paying 29% for someone else's money.

If you need to borrow money, use a mortgage, not a credit card.

I use my Amex Platinum quite a bit, many cool perks and discounts and gets me into the Centurion Club and others when I travel. They paid for my TSA Pre and Global entry and Clear, also get Uber credits and XM discounts. Super convenient having that card in my wallet and they have great customer service. I just don't like pay $700 for it annually, but I keep doing it.

I have:

1. Business AMEX Platinum that gets paid off every month, we charge average of $100k a month on that card and I convert the points to amazon or use them on flights through AMEX travel. Some flights I'll get 1/3 of the points back. Easily pays for the annual fee.

2. Visa through Navy Federal Credit Union. The interest rate is low due to CU. I only put dry cleaners on this and an occasional purchase. It is set up on auto pay at $1000 per month which allows about a $2k balance to remain and roll over each month. This costs me about $30 a month and is continually building my credit score, currently at 810 and going up each month. The higher credit score saves me thousands with lower interest rates on other property and business loans.

His “plan” is basic common sense. I’ve never read his book either, but I find his show hilarious to listen to at times.
I find his arrogant/narcissistic personality annoying but the calls can be hilarious. I preferred the show before he fired Chris Hogan, I could care less that he was boinking one of the secretaries.🤣

Anyone else that uses CC to pay for bills starting to see push back? Our largest vendors are starting to charge for CC payments and instead want ACH. Sucks as it’s a big chunk of cash back we’re losing. 👎

So far I only have one vendor in Canada that puts a 12.5% surcharge on CC payments, so I pay them with ACH. Everyone else seems to be fine with a CC...or at least has refused to offer me a discount if I pay in a different manner....so I'll keep using my CC.

You can really stack the rewards and cash back with Costco. Especially on gas and travel. The chase preferred cards are nice too because you can transfer the points to your hotel or mileage accounts and make them go further. A quick google search and “the points guy” articles will pop up explaining how to do it. When I bought my can am, they wouldn’t take cash or check, but would take a card with no credit fee so I used the chase preferred and racked up the free points. 👍🏻

Yeah it might be starting in the tech industry but many of our vendors are starting to charge 3-4% for CC payments. I totally understand as we've been doing it forever and have always had our clients primarily pay by check but wasn't sure if it was happening in other industries as well

I don’t necessarily pay them off every month. Sometimes if I know o have a big check coming in but want to purchase a big item sooner instead of waiting I’ll put it on CC. So for that couple / few months before I pay it off, I’d rather have 17% it stead of 25%. Not to mention it’s just the principal really!! 😂

I wasnt speaking to credit cards. I was speaking to the general statement around here all the time that people should pay only cash for things or don’t buy it. There’s plenty of times I can think of where borrowing makes more sense. Specifically regarding credit cards the example I pointed out above. Big ticket item you buy then pay off in a couple months. Take the hit in the interest. Time is money and quality of life matters. But mostly what I was referring to is creative financing. Such as using a line of credit against your investments to buy big ticket items instead of cash or standard loan. Then using the interest yoire making in your principal to pay back the credit line. Never touch the principal investment. Smart money.

With Chase CC’s I have (Marriott Bonvoy and Hyatt), they offer payment plans with special low interest rates. So, you can spread out a $500 or $2000 purchase (for example) over say 6 or 12 months. You pay a small fee as well. I haven’t tried it, but looks like something that @Tank could take advantage of. This way you compartment your ‘installment’ balances from amounts you’d payoff each month.

Whenever talking about CC's with friends and family they automatically think I have CC debt and can't afford to pay cash. I tell them I pay everything off early and have no CC debt and I just like playing the game of points and perks while enjoying the convince of the card. Their reply is usually "I just don't like CC's" lol.

Lol. Exactly. I have two cards. Don’t use them much and I don’t owe anything (right now) on them. But I don’t mind carrying a little debt on them for a few months if it makes sense. That’s what that shits for. Like I said above, for me, quality of life is important. More important than getting down to the penny on interest vs paying cash etc. and The convenience is really what I’m after. But also, on the flip side of that, I don’t want to get overly fucked by the cc companies either. Just looking for the best deal on one to replace the shitty one I have. For the way I use them, it sounds like the Costco one is the ticket. We’re members, we go to Costco. We like Costco. Seems pretty cut and dry and terms sound right. 👍👍

GF and I use that card too, pays for the higher Costco membership, plus we get a check at the end of the year.

We also use the Capital One Venture for most everything else. We just cashed in 400k in points for an Hawaiian Trip next month.
We don't use their travel service. We just bought tickets and hotel with the card, then use the points directly to pay off that puchase,
Works out much cheaper on points that way.

In that case if you are being that 'disciplined' I would have two cards. One you use to maximize points when you plan to pay it off by the end of the month (these cards typically have higher rates). Then you can find a second card with a credit union or similar that has less perks but lower rate for when you want to carry a balance. You'll not find one that does both, the CC companies are in it to make money...

I have a chase card that some how hasn't charged interest in over a year. My bookkeeper called and asked where I put the interest charges as she was as surprised as I was. Still collecting my points though. Not sure how that worked out but I sure as hell not going to call and complain about it.

Amex has the Centurion Lounges and if you are flying an airline (Delta for example) you get access to their lounges too. Free food and drinks. Best places to be if you have a long layover.

I'm not happy about Amex now charging $50 for an extra guest unless you spend 75k with them. And the Centurion Lounges now are so crowded. It's like they'l let anyone in. lol I didn't realize that the Amex gives you access to the Delta Lounge, I heard the one at LAX is really nice. I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, when we flew Delta, Platinum card holders got into their lounge for free if you were flying with them. 1 guest per card holder was $35 each. This was in Atlanta.

Platinum also gets you the Clear Pass thing (I think that's what it is).......similar to TSA Pre Check.

Every big money guy I know uses credit cards exclusively. Whether it’s the purchase protection or points, it’s a no-brainer.
Yeah, most guys I know that own their own businesses push all Expenses through credit cards to get the points. Buddy that owned an aerospace company would buy all his machinery with his credit cards and get matching points for dollar. Machinery in the hundred of thousands of Dollars range. He and family flew first class everywhere and never paid a dime for tickets. Rich getting richer because they play the game. And the more money you have the easier to play the game it is.

We do a US wide trade , a few have a small surcharge to us as many states allow it , In California the law prohibiting it is "still on the books" however the AG admits in plain language that the challenges against its prohibition may not be enforceable

In 1985, California passed a law (Civil Code section 1748.1) that prohibited merchants from adding a surcharge (an extra fee) when customers pay by credit card instead of cash. That law does allow merchants to give customers discounts for paying by cash, check, or debit card, as long as that discount is offered to all customers. The law was challenged by several businesses, and in January of 2018 a federal court held that the law could not be enforced as to the businesses which brought that case. (Italian Colors v. Becerra (9th Cir. 2018) 878 F.3d 1165.) The Attorney General will generally apply the Italian Colors decision to merchants that are similarly situated to the Italian Colors plaintiffs.

I'm guessing that was the "beginning of the end". Sure was nice while it lasted :)
