What’s the best credit card to get?

I only have two credit cards and admittedly, know little to nothing about credit cards.

They’re both capital one cards. But I just realized (because I never read the fine print) when I was looking at a recent bill, one of them is now at 27% interest and they don’t just charge the interest on your payment, it accrues on any balance! Holy rape hotline Batman. Anyway, I want to cancel that one and get a basic card to replace it. I like to have one and I like the wife to have one in case we need em.

So, what’s the card to get. I guess I could be cool with airline points or cash back or whatever but really, I don’t need gimmicks, I just need an average to good rate card that isn’t gonna straight fuck me or quietly jump up in a couple years.

Oh, my credit score is 800 if that matters. And it’s going up from what I see so that’s cool.

What says the masses?

They charge monthly fee though no?

And aren’t they not accepted as redistribution as visa and Mastercard?

I don’t want to pay a fee on top of paying credit card interest that’s highway robbery as it is.

I think any card is going to charge you interest on any balance you carry from month to month. As for cards, we typically use Capital One for 2% cashback everywhere.

Costco member? Go get the Citi Costco Visa. There is yearly cash back as a % of purchases. No interest during the grace period. I get a grand or 2 back every year for doing nothing other than swiping it and paying it off monthly.

Also Amazon has a good credit card.

yes, most Amex have a monthly fee. and are not as widely accepted, the reason is CC processors charge a higher fee for them. at my office we will only accept Amex for over $1,000. which is our "nice" way of telling people no.

Citi Costco is legit. Already have almost $400 in cash back from gas and groceries.

Still have my Amex business gold card. It's the only card I use and the balance gets paid monthly. Points accrued is nice, but we have had excellent service from Amex over the years when it comes to fraud protection.

BTW, the annual fee is $295.00.

This a good read if you care about the rewards.

The interest rate should not be an issue because you NEVER EVER want to have a balance.

For me its about airline cards. I have both Southwest and Alaska airline’s credit cards, mainly because those two airlines serve The most cities flying out of San Diego. I’ve got roughly about 260,000 miles between the two. I never use the points, hoping to rack up enough to take the whole family on a couple of vacations in the years to come.

side note. I need a Costco citi card, I shop there way too much to not have one.

I have 2.

AMEX platinum is $695/year with a ton of benefits if you travel.

Amazon Visa through chase. 5% back on all Amazon purchases, and I don’t think there’s an annual fee.

I use the Visa for everything I buy on Amazon and the AMEX for everything else.

Both have 25%+ APR but I’ve never ever carried a balance so it doesn’t matter to me.

I've been debt free for years and only recently made a purchase utilizing a minimum amount of financing. I'm in a similar position as Tank, and have contemplated a new CC. But the fees and interest rates are such a turnoff. I'll be watching this thread and hope to learn more from the experts. 👍

I use Chase, they pay 1.5 % cash back and if you charge over $5,000 on a single charge you get a bonus cash back.
I always pay the full balance every month so there is no interest.

Sounds like I’m gonna look at the Costco one. I like Costco and am a member. Seems like a good starting point.

I use Amazon when I have to but Fuck Bezzos and Amazon and their world domination bullshit. Lol

Thanks for all the recommendations!

👍👍

Regarding balance. I aim to pay off balances quickly but shit happens and money gets moved around or something comes up or frankly, I Fuckin space out on it or just don’t feel like paying it off right away whatever the reason it’s nice to have low interest Or at least an average rate that’s acceptable.

Most banks offer a cash back card these days, who do you bank with?

My daily use card is a Citibank Costco visa, it doubles as a membership card and has cash back.

I also have a Chase Amazon card with 5% back, I use it on all our amazon prime purchases.

If a card charges interest with no grace period it would not be in my wallet!

Credit unions. I have one at 6.9. Carry a minimal balance if any, but a hefty limit if I need it. Fuck that 23+ %.

I belong to county credit union. I’ll see what they offer for cards if anything. Sounds like Costco is it.

Although I find it fascinating that Costco didn’t even accept credit cards until a few years ago and now they offer credit cards! 😂😂

Yup....credit unions...I have one that I've had for awhile, and it's still only at 11% even with the rates being shitty right now

the majority of my cash back on that card comes from gas and costco purchases. stack that on the executive costco membership that pays back cash and you can make out pretty good.

If you travel and stay at hotels, several times a year at the Marriott Chase Bonvoy boundless card
It’s $85 a year but you get a free night see you actually are ahead of the game. He may have to charge a few thousand the first month or two and they give you between 40 and 50,000 points look for the current promotions.

Marriott is the largest hotel chain in the world with all kinds of Brands. . I got a lot of points, but of course I put almost everything on it right down from my homeowners insurance or car insurance to a carton of milk.

Went to Italy this year and saved over $20,000 on hotels using points. You have to look what your tax rate how much do you have to make to net $20,000 to spend then on hotel rooms.

I have a united airline card which is purely based on living in Houston one of their global hub. I pay 95 dollars a year, however you get free checked bags so if you check 2 bags a year that washes. I don't travel much so when I do I use one of the annual lounge passes. We charge everything there and just pay it off monthly. The math works out to about a flight a year and other little add ons. We went to Jamaica for a wedding a few years ago and went first class on points, etc.

I'm sure there are better ones and better ways to do it but that's what works for us.

Make sure you have something other than AMEX....Myself, and a bunch of other small business owners I know, don't accept it.

Capital One is hard to beat as it is 2% back on all purchases. We use Cap One for our businesses and I use the points for personal travel. I haven't paid for airfare and lodging in over a decade and we travel a lot.

Amex Platinum for personal use due to the customer service and benefits. There are many benefits beyond just the points you earn. Yes, $695/year but if you use the benefits I can justify it.

I put 100% of my personal purchases on Amex, it's rather rare you find a merchant that doesn't take it. If I do, I'll tell them it's the only card I have on me. A majority of the time they will concede. I accept Amex at our business, I think it's about a half point higher than visa/MC. I can be a dick about things, but a half point to tell my customer no? Come on.

Using a card with points is a no-brainer. It's free money if you're responsible. If you want to go down a rabbit hole look up the points guy. A lot of good tricks.

If you like Southwest- look for offers they put out around this time of year. It's a Chase card, you can earn a crap ton of bonus points in the first few months if you spend $5+/- grand. I opened both a business card and a personal one. Hit the bonuses and transfer points to Southwest and earned a buddy pass. Buddy pass was maybe 125,000 points (which I earned via the bonuses) which means someone can fly with me for free for two calendar years. So if we fly Southwest I use Cap One points to buy my ticket and my wife flies along with me and it costs nothing.

There are all sorts of deals out there, just find what fits you best. Obviously, if you don't pay the thing off monthly none of this pencils out. I have to imagine most credit cards must be north of 20% now. Many other ways to borrow cheaper than a credit card...

Tank asked for the best not cheapest, really hard to beat the AMEX black card, perks are amazing, travel becomes less than half price. need tickets to an event, done, need hotel room when they are booked, done, reward dollars add up quick, access to all sorts of lounges, haven't seen any card that compares,
Amex platinum is pretty close thou and a lot cheaper ( and easier to get)

Gotta agree.
My “best” is my Amex gold.
(It’s not financially sound for me to pay for a better level)

But…can you post the back side now?
(I’ve already got your zip and Bday and last 4…)

Dang Dan. Isn’t the black card invitation only with a min. $250,000 spent per year and something like a $20k fee to get?

That said, I have a basic Amex blue card (hard to beat their credit limit - could literally charge a new cadi with it and there is zero fees with generous cash back), a Citi Costco, and a Chase Prime. I use the Amex mostly but Citi at Costco and Chase on Amazon. The prime card gives you 5% on everything purchased at Amazon.

Im no CC rewards Guru, but I’d find a rewards card that matches your spending habits. Costco Citi looks good if the rewards work for you. I’ve read Chase Sapphire Visa is good (2% on everything and good redemption for flights/hotels). Fidelity has 2% back on everything if you deposit the cash rewards into one of their investment accounts.

We use Marriott Bonvoy Visa and Hyatt Visa as I used to stay at their hotels a lot. Also have Discover (for their 5% cash back categories). Interest rates are pretty high probably, but honestly haven’t even checked it in years as don’t carry a balance. No baller here, just works for us.

You could get say 3 cards: a hotel, airline, and then a 2% on everything. Lots of strategies.

I’ve used plenty of 0% for x # of months CC’s in the past to buy certain items when it made sense. Keep that in mind if you need a HVAC capacitor replacement. Lol.

I’ve had a bunch and settled on Amex Gold. It’s 4x points on food and grocery which comes out to a small fortune.

I travel every month or 2 for sports and haven’t paid for a hotel/flight in years. If you are not taking advantage of CC points you are leaving a ton on the table. I’ve saved at least 20k in travel costs.

I have platinum also but feel that is more geared towards consistent travelers (weekly).

If you plan to use Amex points for travel, transfer them out and you will get WAYYYY more value.

Here’s something to keep in mind about closing accounts and how it can negatively affect your score. If the annual fee is negligible, it might be better to pay it off and keep the account open and not use it.

Yeah. I’m aware of this. No balance on the card and theres not an annual fee. It just charges you on the balance on top of charging interest on the payment. It’s a Fuckin shit card. Even the chick at capital one, when I called to negotiate a better rate was like “oh yeah, this is not a good card” lol by the way they wouldn’t lower the rate or change any terms. Fuckers.

When I say shit can it, I most likely Mean cut the card up But leave the account open. Grab a replacement card that’s better. After that cards up and established. Then cancel the shit card. Take a credit hit? Oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️ im
Not financing anything anytime soon.

We have a personal Amazon and a business Amazon card. Both are 5% back. Amazon sells groceries, fresh food, etc., delivered to our door, same day. Price wise, very competitive. The additional 5% on today's order can be used on the next order or carried over. Between home and business, we average $2,500/month so that's $2,500/month that we were spending anyway. We don't carry balances.

We also have Costco, gas is on the way to work and .65 a gallon less, plus 4%, approx .20 a gallon than my corner Shell station, is $17.00 a tankful. I go outside of drive hours, so there may be a 5 minute wait. Until my take home pay exceeds $200/hr , I'll wait for the 1 guy in front of me. Also, have had rebate checks of a $1,000/yr.

Costco would be great if you didn't have to wait yearly to collect. PNC has card as well as Chase gives same money back but can collect monthly.

I noticed that as well with Costco card. Think mine started at around 15% when I got it. Now right at 20%. I pay it off monthly but its getting harder and harder to do that.

Keep telling myself, spend less than you make.

Don’t see as many 0% apr offers now days. 😁

Skater owners never borrow money on their credit cards. Cigarettes owners shouldn't either.

Apple Card, Amazon and Costco are all good suggestions.

The annual fee makes the business case for an Amex hard in most cases.
