Well there is a reason i'm behind the camera

I've been in the tv/movie biz my whole career, worked with some great people. watched amazing talent.
I did a modification to my Milwaukee table saw to adapt it to the packouts and posted it on a Milwaukee forum. well few people asked if i would do a video,
Sure why not, no big deal, not going to do anything fancy, how hard can it be.
Made a little tripod holder for my phone, went and got a wireless mic that works with the iPhone, moved couple things around in the shed. couple lights, figured out what i was going to say.
Set up the shot. walk over behind the saw and look at that i forgot how to talk, wtf, stammering. lose my train of thought in about 3 seconds,
Well that's just silly. ok start over, not a whole lot better, fuck it just shoot a lot of stuff and edit it later,
Sure is a lot easier when other people are in front of the camera,

People always ask me how I'm able to do videos on the fly without saying "uh" or being nervous about it etc..

I didn't have a whole lot of choice in the matter when rdp became my primary source of income. So what I did was stand in front of a mirror and practiced talking about some random subject and I would time myself... If I said the word "uh" once I'd start over and do it again. When you get to the point that you can talk to yourself in a mirror for 3 minutes straight and not fuck up, you are ready to do typical interviews that are shorter like boat videos etc..

I shot a video once....instructional for a fucktard customer who couldn't read instructions. I watched it and holy fuck, I've got a voice for print. Just a monotonous boring meh.

Probably didn't help that I'd just gone through 40 emails back and forth with these idiots and was rather frustrated....but, that's the last one I did and probably ever will do.

Its just like when you were a kid with a tape recorder.....we sound much better in our own heads....lol

People tell me I should start a You Tube channel because I do so many things. I have no desire to do that because I can see how much work it is to produce quality videos. plus, I don't want to be internet famous.

I watch a lot of You Tube and some people are really good at rattling on about stuff and others suck. I think if you aren't good on the fly, just do a voice over. A lot of times it is better that way.

One of the best classes I took in college was a public communication class. One of the assignments from that class was to listen to talk radio or watch the news for 30 minutes and count the number of vocal pauses (um, like, etc) the host or news anchor used.

The new winners forget everything, they say "like" "uh" "um" and don't thank anybody. Then you get some of the new small kids that have been prepped on all the people to thank and they do a great job.

My daughter started using the “filler word” LIKE, picked it up from her peer group of teenage girls. When there is a group of them yapping away they will say the word LIKE, so much it’s not even funny. I called her on it and started counting out loud when she would say like, it didn’t take long for her to realize what she was doing. She told her friends about me counting her LIKES and they all started doing it to each other. They had to slow down and think about what they were saying, and it seems to have subsided within the group. They are no longer speaking TEENAGER

Dean Skuza Nhra funnycar driver used to recieve words or phrases from his crew chief right before starting the car. He had to use the word or phrase in the end of run interview or lose the bet.

Public speaking is a talent, and like any other, it really does take practice. When my daughter was young, she was shy, introverted, and had (still has) a speech impediment. Needless to say, she was not excited about doing presentations at school. We practiced and filmed and made her conscious of her arm/hand movements, her eye contact, her posture, her use of fillers (ummm... like...) and her smile when she was presenting. Within a couple months she was volunteering to present first and thriving. Nothing you can't handle.

I made a few videos people liked long ago but to do it right it's an hour of editing for every 30 seconds on the screen and that sux the fun out of it.
