Well we went to havasu for a four day weekend got the old boat out on sunday.Went down to steamboat cove and hung out with some cool peopleand had a good time.Around two decided to head on home early as we were planning on doing a beer can chicken and relaxing in the pool.We head out and had just passed palm resort when I see my water temp gauge heading to 190.Oh shit! Lost the water pump impeller which was'nt even a year old.Had to get into some safer water on the east side of the lake and tossed the anchor.Luckily I had the old impeller as a spare in the tool box.So I busted out the tools and very carefully swapped impellers which was'nt easy as the manifolds and risers were smokin hot.Any way forty minutes and a few minor burns later we were on our way.One thing that bugged me was with all the traffic going by not ONE boat rolled up to see how we were doing.By the way the boat is a v-drive with a cam drive water pump,if it was anything else I would have had to get towed.Gonna change that impeller more often now L.O.L.:swear

That's pretty unusual. 99% of the time when I stop people are pulling up and asking if I need help:hmm

When is the right time to stop? I always wave at everyone that is stopped that I am passing and pay attention to their replys. You know, do they wave back or signal you towards them? I have slowed down and pulled up next to a boat just to have them get pissed before... Honestly what is the proper way to approach this situation?

I know how it is to be stranded, so I always make a point to stop if somebody is requesting help.

Everyone in boat waving like crazy, and optional holding up little child. :D

LMAO!!! Then that is easy enough, been there done that floating broken down river... Even had an old neighbor (Asshat!) pull over then tell me he didn't know how to tow me back and take off!

I will always stop if I see people broken down. It's paying it forward. I lost a fuel pump in the channel last year and the guy cruising next to me saw my engine shut off and watched me try to fire it for a couple minutes. He circled around and pulled up next to me with a rope. Towed me to Windsor and set me free. I tied a $50 to the rope and sent it to him. He insisted that I take it back but I just tied my boat up and ran away to the truck . Great family.

"When is the right time to stop?"
Years ago me and 2 friends jumped in my Sanger Flat Bottom and raced up to the dam. Friend had thrown the ski rope off the seat and onto the floor. Rope got tangled in driveshaft and caused the shaft log to crack and break up as the prop shaft flexed up. Basically was sinking so I pointed and nearest boat and told driver "I need you to tow me" There was no asking at this point as bilge and a tank top was not going to prevent us from sinking.

If the engine hatch is open and they're in the middle of the lake I will change my coarse to get close enough to see if they need help. Othersise, I just wave to everybody.

I also think that the universal symbol for help is to hold up an oar/paddle...not that I carry one.

I wasn't trying to sound stupid, good try huh?!?! I guess you answered what I was asking, I would think something like the flag or the paddle in the air... I had my hatch open with smoke pouring out from throwing a rod and no one stopped for me... I wasn't waving anything because the top half of my body was under the hatch trying to figure out what happened...

I stop for everyone and always have if it is questionable... It's always fun to float with more people anyways!

If i see somebody floatin with the hatch up and heads down in the engine I assume they might need help.I always ask if everything is okay.Never had to tow anybody yet but at least I make sure they have it under control, they may only need to borrow a tool or hose clamp to save their day.Might take a few minutes of my time but it could mean alot to someone else.Good karma is better than bad.:thumbsup

I'm one of the losers that generally stop. Month or so ago, stopped by a Hallett full people waving there arms, at least 10, they were out of gas and needed a tow. Pulled them at 4 miles down river to Havasu springs, they were most appreciative, just couldn't leave those little kids out there. Longest 4 miles I've ever seen. :D

It took us 45 minutes to tow some dude down river when the boat ride is like 15 minutes.

Hi tony:D

Iseem to remember watching the back of your boat during a long slow trip from the back beach to the docks at the Sag. Guess you were already stopped when that need came up. :champagne:

When you replace your impeller make sure the vanes are swaying in the opposite direction to rotation, and coat the inside of the housing with glycerine,, or ski boot foot slime lube which most the wake board boats around you keep on board in bottles.
You can get little packets of Glycerin at the parts store and carry them with your spare.

When you say swaying in the opposite direction what would that do?
My neovane pump will roll them over regardless of direction of install, just curious

Shit, the last time i needed a tow i was in sight of the launch ramp at echo and we were trying to wave in a tow and i just watched cock sucker after cock sucker fly on by and finally a couple in a bayliner of all boats pulled up and i asked them for a tow to the ramp and they said this is our first time ever driving a boat so i told them no problem, tie this rope to that thingy and just go that way, thanks.

If the hatch is up and someone is looking at the engine I won't stop.
If the hatch is up and someone has the arms in the air waving I will stop.

If they need help they can try to get it, just like when I break down:D I don't want every boat to stop becasue I have the hatch open maybe I am checking something or I can fix the problem.
