I had to check some wheat yesterday, and as usual our Lab Noxx accompanied me as he does every day. We have had a lot of rain recently and the woods and thickets have been flooded and has pushed all sorts of animals to the edges. Also yesterday it was sunny and somewhat warm. Noxx has been trained for retrieving and also as a shed horn dog. As we got close to the edge of the field I cast him to make a downwind pass by a Cane thicket to scent for horns and he ran head on into a Cottonmouth snake that was sunning. He got bit on his front Paw and I heard him yelp and when I turned he came running to me and had immediately started limping. I thought he may have got a sticker and couldn't find anything and kind of put it off as not a big deal. He loaded in the truck fairly routinely and I never thought anything else about it until we got to the next farm (45 minutes) and when I opened his kennel, to my horror his front paw and leg was swelled to three times the normal size, and he was having a hard time breathing(seemed rapid and labored). I immediately ran him to his vet and they started him on an IV with meds and painkillers. He is staying at the vets as they have a person watching him all night. He made it through the night and when I got there today he had lost skin on his paw and part of his pad and it had started moving up his leg and still had a lot of swelling. He will continue to stay until we get an all clear. I think he will be fine but will make me be way more aware of where I send him as I feel horrible as I put him in that situation. I couldn't imagine having to tell my girls who are 4 and 7 something had happened to him. Please be vigilant.

Sorry to hear. Not much worse than our pups getting injured.

Thats a rough one. He will make it and not make the same mistake again. Praying for a speedy recovery so he can resume his duties.

...Holy smokes...watching a pet go through that isn’t far away from watching your kid do a fiery endo on a bicycle...
...was pet sitting a dog at my lake property...the dog started barking like crazy at what I thought was a coiled up piece of garden hose under my motorhome???...I was busy and didn’t pay all that much attention...When I took a look at the dog some hours later one side of his face was fat fat fat and his eye very red...I walked over and looked under the motorhome...The hose turned out to be a Rattlesnake...couldnt get the rattler to go live somewhere else by tossing a few rocks his way... so unfortunately he had to meet his demise at the end of a hoe...
...And the dog,...well all he wanted to do was keep playing...
...Called a vet...and he said the dog should be fine???...took a couple of weeks for his fat face to disappear...
...got my fingers crossed for your pup...

Prayers for your pup!

This is one of my biggest fears about our dog. She is rattlesnake trained, but if she is running or distracted and just simply doesn't smell, see, or hear it, then whammo, snakebite [emoji852]

Prayers for your pup. I'm sorry you guys are having to go through this [emoji852]

Thanks everyone, I called this morning and he made it another night, and they said he was trying to be a bit more active. I think we are good but man what a scare. I think what upsets me the most is him not being here. I work in agri and he goes everywhere with me everyday.

If they make it through the anifilactic shock they should be ok. The snake shot for dogs doesn't immunize them, but gives them more time to get them to the vet.

Thursday night I took my 5 lb Maltese out before going to bed and to my surprise there was a coyote in the woods and my thinks she is a pit bull took out after it.My yelling stopped her before she got near.
I now have to carry my rifle out ever time I go out at night.
I hope I can get a shot off.
Took three fox two years ago.
