Oh pick me!!

We bought the Super Yazoo eco friendly ones five years. The washer just took a shit, and my wife said she would have to wash stuff two or three times to get it clean!

So This time...

We went with the Speed Queen washer. It's the same price everywhere at 999.99, but my wife is a happy camper these days! It fills the whole tub with water and everything Comes out clean.

She said with the washer that just died, the lint trap in the dryer was always full. Now there is hardly anything in it.

Not cheap, but well built. 👍

Walk through Lowes and Home Depot.
They usually have a 2'fer sale; washer and dryer at a good price.

The base models at COSTCO are junk, barely last a year.

Use Tide.

Honestly I just buy some 10 year old ones off craigslist that are dial and go style. Cheap, last a while, if they break can them and find another. The new stuff is junk for the most part. The speed queen should be a commercial quality unit right?

Frigidaire Affinity front loaders. They can be stacked if needed. Very quiet, great machines, 5 years running strong. I had to order a new $10 door latch for the washer from Sears, but other than that, all good.

My strongest recommendation would be to find an old Maytag washer and dryer. Something with big mechanical push buttons and rotary dials on the front. They are simple and bullet proof and superbly easy to repair IF it ever needs it. Grandparents had theirs for nearly 40 years. I've had ours for over 23 years.

Boy, I wish I could say that. We had the same set and the washer had nothing but trouble. The end deal is when they said I needed a new main board @ $300 smackers. Frick all this new tech shit, give me an old dial/pushbutton set and we be stylin. I'll be buying CL stuff for $50.00 to a $100.00 for the rest of my life.

Just don't get a front load washer......they cost twice as much, don't clean your cloths (because they use so little water), and a lot of people have mold problems (or odor problems) because they are sealed, they don't ventilate when not in use.

Stay away from LG, all the other American made washers/dryers are made at the same two factories in the US and they are all the same.....they just put different labels on them (like Chevy and GMC trucks).

Just get the biggest model and stay away from all the fancy BS bells and whistles the top of the line have.

That's an oxymoron(sp). I'd buy the cheapest dial operated machines I could find.

The old top loader washers and front loader dryers with dials. Simple and run forever.

We bought the cheapest we could from Best Buy a little over 13 years ago. I think we've had to spend a total of around 300 in two maintenance/repairs over the years. Both are still going strong. Everyone I know that buys the new ones with all the bells and whistles have been lucky to get 5 good years out of them.

Speed Queen washer/dryer set. Love ours. Looks them up. More importantly, you'll be floored by all the positive reviews.

Just bought an older Maytag toploader washing machine used.
The mechanic in the back of the shop said they are better than Speed Queens now .
Said the transmissions are more dependable on them. Basic machine that runs forever...:thumbsup

I know alot of people are down on front loaders but we have had good luck with ours. I just replaced our Whirlpool Duet washer with another Duet. The first one went about 14 years with no issues. The original dryer is still going strong, with only minor repairs/maintainence.

All of the new stuff is crap. Period. There are a few videos on all new appliances being crap. The most expensive stuff comes with the same 1 year warranty as the cheap stuff. The stuff I have now is doing ok, but they are only a couple years old so definitely not going to say how great they are at such a young age. That's like owning a ford PSD 6.0 or 6.4 and bragging about how you have 80,000 miles on your truck with no problems.

But, there is an alternative for washers and dryers. Look at commercial units designed for laundromats. My mom got tipped on this by her appliance repair guy, who was out repairing her new washer for the 2nd time that was a year old and was the very top of the line. These commercial dryers are not that expensive when compared to the top of the line crap that is sold for residential use.

.

I used to think this way, until we got a Sears (Samsung) top loader .
4 years old - zero maintenance, gets clothes just as clean as the old top load Maytag it replaced using less water and way less detergent. It has excellent express cycles for quick washes (about 25-35 mins) and the full cycle is about an hour and which we pretty much only use it for towels and bedding. Two other bonuses are they spin so fast, the dryer time is cut in about half and you can put a shit ton more in a front loader than a top loader with a similar size tub.
Downsides --- it cost a lot--- and on ours, you do have to leave the door unlatched as BajaMike says above.
I'd not buy another top loader.... no matter what the price.

I know way more about doing laundry than I want to.:grumble:

The commercial ones are tanks. The older top loaders and dryers.:thumbsup Maytag and Speed Queen...
I lean towards Maytag after comparing transmissions in both units.

I would recommend staying away from front loader washers. The bearings go out because of all the stress on them. Mine went out and the repairman said to fix it is about $500. A new is just a little more. We got a top loader and no looking back.

I am rocking the Maytag dial knob and push button guys that I purchased new 3 years ago. No problems and get clothes clean and dry. I purchased at Home Depot as they have a price match guarantee, so find it the cheapest place possible on the internet, a place that doesn't include delivery and haul away, make sure HD carries same model, get from them, they match price plus don't charge for delivery, install, and haul away. All my stuff is new as of 3 years ago, all is Maytag, and so far so good.

I think this is my horse here.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Maytag-4...-Water-Wash-and-PowerWash-MVWC565FW/207084708

And even though its water friendly and doesn't have an agitator, clothes are coming out clean after wrenching on the car or boat, and I can tell shirts and stuff aren't as beat to shit as when I had one with the center agitator, stuff lasts longer. Anywya, good luck :thumbsup

I have 2 front loaders, going strong for about 5 years on one set, and dang I think 10 on the other... No problems, Whirlpool duet.... We leave the washer door open between loads and have never had a mold problem

OP asked for latest and greatest, not oldest with buttons and turn dials.

I think the newer washers do a better job at washing clothes than the newer ones while using less water and power. Newer ones have more capacity and the front loaders are nice because they don't have the impeller deal in the middle for your clothes to get twisted and stretched out from it.

On CL, you never no what you're going to get. You could take it home,to find it doesn't work properly and be out $50-$100 plus your time. I'd rather be able to call Sears and tell them to pick it up and deliver a new one, if it craps out. Sears is great.

LG's in the back round are 8+ years running 2 loads a day.
Flawless.
Amazingly clean cloths.
The steam sanitize cycle is brutal.
Really gets the dirt out.

We run the kids socks, washcloths, dish rags / sponges / towels in a bleach cycle once a week and it tackles any mold or odor problems.

The most important thing over anything else is the machines are Candy Apple Red clear coat.

I'll take style and color over dependability, practicality and ability every time.
Now the wife, well, she has a different mindset,,,,

OP asked for the latest and greatest, and the latest and greatest top loaders don't have the old impeller design. The bottom is just a disc that turns and nothing gets hung up on it. That is my latest washer that I got after my old front loader died. I actually gave the front loader washer to another board member as he needed the mother board for his washer. I told him he could have mine, but had to take the whole washer.

The biggest problem people have with the HE washers (both front and top loaders) is that you need to use the HE detergent, and use the right amount. I have a family of 8 and our washer runs a lot. I have kids from age 15 to 6 months. Plus, I'm a dirty midget. My front loader did a great job of cleaning. It had a mold/mildew issue with the front seal, that later models don't have as they fixed the drainage in the seals. But I had to replace the water pump and gave it up when the motor died. The mold/mildew issue got worse at my current home as we are on a well, so there is no chlorine in the water. We ran bleach cycles about once a week. With our newer toploader, we just run the cleaner tabs once a month and it has working out so far. But my next washer will be a commercial unit. The appliance industry is owned by just a few manufacturers who make all the brands. There are some great videos on the decline of quality in appliances. Spending more money only gets you more features and benefits, not reliability. And they make a ton of money off of extended warranties. Hopefully the move to sustainability will force or shame these appliance makers into making quality that lasts again.

I'm going with Joe and say Speed Queen. The set we have is about 8 years old and work great. No frills and turn knob controls. Had to put a timer in the washer a couple of years ago, but it was about a 20 min job after I bought the timer locally (clock motor and the cams do wear out and make noise). These are old skool top loader washer and front load dryer and seem to be indestructible.

Uncle used to have several coin-op laundries in the rough side of town years ago and the assholes could not tear them up. I have old Maytags at the lake house with the gear drive tranny, but I don't know if they still use them.

Interesting timing of this thread. I've been bent over this sucker for the last two nights but I think I have it figured out with a $16 part. This is a 12 year old Maytag dryer. It has been flawless in that time.

Stay away from the front loaders with all the marketing features is my suggestion. Sometimes hard to convince the wife/gf when in the showroom I get it.

This is my philosophy. I furnished my entire kitchen for under a grand including trash compactor. Then a couple months ago I saw the new one at Costco for 150.00 off. so about 660.00. I'm so impressed with the quietness, quality and size of the drum, I'll never go back. When it breaks I'll just bring it back to Costco and get the new one. You can't beat the Costco return policy.

After my run of a whopping 9 years with those front load TROMM's I recently bought a pair of conventional Maytag top loader and as far as I'm concerned that thing doesn't wash for shit. The dryer is basic Gas matching dryer and it's fine.

569 washer on sale at Home Depot
649 dryer same on sale deal at Home Depot.

Exactly 1/2 of what I paid for those front loaders.

HE soap is a must or else the clothes will have residual soap.

Most new top loader washing machines don't have an agitator. I got rid of my front loaders and got a nice old set of Whirlpool ultimate care II. Every option to actually clean really dirty clothes, including double rinse cycle... Best set ever. $200.

We just bought what sounds like the same, top load Maytag washer & matching gas dryer. Price was about the same at Lowes. Delivery is Wednesday, hope we made a good choice.
