It was impressive to see how nicely that TTR125 found a new home. I'll try my luck and see if anyone has a bike for me.

My idea is to buy an old 2-stroke that's easy to work on. I'd prefer it running, but if not, that might still be an option depending on what is likely wrong with it. I've owned several bikes, and still have my aging '07 KTM 525EXC for my offroad needs. Sadly, outside of air filter maintenance, really minor repairs, and the rare oil change, I always have all my work done by mechanics. As I've gotten old, though, I'm in need of more restful hobbies.

My plan is to slowly and carefully pull apart and reassemble a bike, and start overcoming my nervousness about screwing it all up and having to take it to a mechanic to fix what I broke. I think best to start with a simple 2-stroke bike, then later a more complicated bike, then maybe a simple car or boat, etc, etc. One thing I probably need to do right away is just practice pulling stripped screws and bolts - one of my biggest fears. I guess I don't need a bike for that, maybe just a hunk of wood, some hardware, and an extraction kit.

So, the target bike: Living in CA, an old street-legal little dual sport (mid to late seventies or early eighties 100-200cc) might be best. Another idea is a full size 125 or 250 dirt bike, which appeals to me since I've only ridden big 4-strokes off road, and ripping around on a light 125 would be quite a different experience for me.

I'm not seeing much on Craigslist or BAT. I also don't want a pristine work of art, since I'll feel bad just pulling it apart. I'd prefer something a little rough.

Anyone have something like that, preferably near Orange County, CA?

Subscribe to this guy on YouTube. He buys and fixes dirt bikes, snowmobiles, boats, tractors, quads, etc..and gets them running.
Uses the same basic principles for diagnosis and can make about anything run..

Yup! I already am. It's pretty fun to watch. Somehow he always gets it going, at least the ones I've seen so far.

As a stand up jet skier, watching him with that old Kawi 750 was especially entertaining. ... And the comments about how to start the motor and THEN run the hose water - he just completely ignores. :)

I don't have anything for sale but I think a 125 would complement you stable. It will feel like riding a mountain bike compared to your 525. If you want a real challenge find a rusty bike to work on. and you will get all the bolt extraction pratice you will need.

But seriously I would check aftermarket stuff first. Find a bike that still offers rebuild kits, plastics, replacement parts, etc. That last thing you want to do is get a bike and not be able to get parts for. If you have to custom make anything or hunt down NOS or used parts it will become a never ending project that you are afraid to break anything on.

A RD350 would be badass to tinker with.
When we were in HS the RD350 came out and we all bought one. Dealer couldn't keep them in stock. $800
I have a 1978 DT 175

It may be tough to get an old 2 stroker street legal these days.
I saw a super clean DT400 on FB Market place yesterday but it didn't need work and was $4000.
I'd look for a thumper. Like a SR500 or XT500. Build an old school cafe racer. Nothing corners like a 260 lb. single with sticky tires.

If you want a two stroke I have a pair of Maicos at the shop I'd like to get rid of. Both 1983's, a 250 and a 490, located in Huntington Beach. Both need complete restorations but all the stuff is still out there. Yeah, time to take that big first step down the rabbit hole. :D

Any interest in a 89 or 90 Kawi KDX200?

Its been in my shed for 10+ years, but i'm positive it would start second or third kick after a carb cleaning and fresh gas. I got it as a kid and rode it for years, it was the bike I put newbies on when they were learning or I needed a second bike to loan out.

It should get a top end though.

I think I want to stay mainstream Japanese, though the Maico 250 sounds nice.

That KDX 200 could be good. I would prefer a CA plated bike, so I could ride it around the house as I tweak on it. My notion is that if I do get a pure off roader, a newer 125 or 250 with modern suspension would be better. Nevertheless, that KDX is something for me to ponder.

left me know if you decide to go full off road. 2014 Husky TE250 currently a 300. all the best parts. TBT suspension, scotts steering damper, rekluse, etc etc i have the original clutch and all the original engine parts. it needs a pilot jet and i'll throw that in too, lol. not sure what i would want for it. has an AZ plate..... I have 5 bikes (or 6?) in the garage right now including a new 300 so it doesn't see any use. it's set up to ride extreme enduro. also it's in the middle of arizona. should note that this one is totally NOT a street bike or anything you would want to ride on the street.

My buddy has a 71 Bultaco pursang 250 that he's considering parting with. Not running, but about 95% complete.

I wouldn't go to old as you'll have a hard time finding parts.

I'll keep an eye out. I come across these all the time. I'd be tempted to look for something you can register with a plate in Arizona or somewhere. That would create a lot of value to the bike.

It is amazing what people have on ebay. I needed gasket set for our 1987 Kawasaki Mojave quad. Got original parts for very fair price.
