I am wondering if there are any wake surfers that have tried real surfing after trying it behind the boat. I realize many live in locations where that isn't possible, but lets face it...most people visiting the river or lake are west coast folks who live within the reach of the ocean.
and yes Dave you should try it.
This is not true. Any wakeboard boat can be used as a surf boat by doing a few modifications. Doesn't matter where you live. To put things in perspective.
Malibu boats is located in Tennessee and Australia.
Ski Nautique is located in Florida, Tige boats is located in Texas. Mastercraft (publicly traded company) built in Tennessee. They are absolutely huge in their home/manufacturing states.
To be honest, I think there are way less wakeboard boats in California then a ton of other states. We are 4-8 hours away from a decent lake. A ton of wake boat owners live 15-20 minute drive to their local lakes, they ride daily. (Not rare to see 1-2 year boats on the used market with 300-400 hours) Maybe an hour drive for their larger lakes. It's very hard to justify a 90-200k purchase to use a few times out of the year. You gotta really love that lifestyle.
Manufacturers host huge events weekly in so many states but the west coast. Competitions, challenges, for surfing, wakeboarding.
There are people all over the world buying up wakeboard boats and this is no lie. Definitely not just a west coast thing. I'm going to go on a limb and say between the top 5 builders, they are selling a minimum of 900-1000 boats a month state wide and globally.
Are the new boats aimed more at surfing? Sure, that's what the market wants. You can now surf with a touch of a button straight from the factory with 0 modifications.
I've got 10 different wakesurf boards in my garage. Different variations, different sizes, 8-9 wakeboards, etc.
Never attempted real surfing, I live 30 minutes away from the beach. I'm not going to buy a surf board and head out to the beach to go ride by myself or another friend.
I'd rather pack up my family, nieces, nephews and friends, head up to the river and do 3 or 4 different activities on the boat then just 1 at the beach.
It's not just the wake surf that people are addicted to, it's the whole package. Family time, being at the lake together, kids surfing, boarding, tubing, playing cornhole on the beach, bbqing, having a drink, relaxing. It's being on vacation that anyone can enjoy.
Hard to experience all of that at the beach for 3-4 days with 10-12 people.
