What's the typical lifespan for a VP fuel jug?
I grabbed one in the garage and set it down on a bottom corner and fractured it. Luckily had an empthy one and funnel handy so spillage was minimal.

Depends on how they are stored. High heat and low humidity kills anything. We keep plastic bins in Havasu storages that are not A/C, and having not seen the sun, break apart in your hands after a couple years.

The VP containers don't seem to hold like the other similar containers. I have others that have lasted 20 years.

I have a few VP fuel cans (metal) that seem to be lasting well even out in the tool shed

I have some cans that are old are still good. Stored inside out of the sun is probably the reason.

have 3 or 4 of them, left outside at river 3-4 years and now outside here at home 2-3 years, still hold gas so far.

Operator error then, I set it down real hard on a corner.

Note , don't bounce your jugs on the concrete.

I have 6 bought at Parker Yamaha in the 80's, I don't use you them for fuel any more, now they are drain and waste oil containers, oddly the clear ones did well the red ones have all gotten brittle.
also have a couple purple ones that held up well, All of them mostly stored out of the sun in So Cal.

Side note all of mine are older and round, the newer VP square ones are much lighter weight And measured in liters, My local NAPA must have 200 of them.

I always seem to loose the damn o-rings in the cap. Then they pour gas on your boot than what you are filling. That and the clear plastic tube turning to something like schedule 80 gas pipe.

Mine have held up well. I just keep a pack of o-rings handy and a little dab of grease so the friggin o-ring does not fall out.

I put a dab of black gasket silicone in the o ring race when the ring gets loose.

Went in and asked for a couple, nope they said, CA banned fuel jugs.
I started MFing the state to the counter guy and he bent down and put a jug on the counter and said they had water jugs though, even had a water jug label on it.

I’ve had my VP jug for 10 years now. Bought it in 2014 out in Mesa, AZ. Always full of 91 for my dirtbike. Zero issues.

I prefer the scribner plastics ones. But they will no longer ship to CA. Have to buy them at Spankys in Parker.

Just had to buy some hydraulic fluid for one of my dump trailers. After 20 years it started leaking at a fitting.

Pro tip. Just bought another exide battery for it at Home depot. $139 they last 5 years. Same size one at auto zone is $229. I have 8 or so Exides now. In the boat, dump trailers work trucks and skid steers.

I worry more about the insides deteriorating.

They last exactly 17 years. I have 6 and the cans are fine but the lids cracked at the top. The older jugs I bought from the SSSS in 2007 have a larger screw on lids than the new ones nowadays so they are all junk.

I have a bunch of Sunoco ones that I bought from eBay for my son's motocross. They are 4 years old and get used hard. Even lost one on the freeway and went back on got it. Not saying they are the best, but they work. I did change the tubes on them a couple times as they got hard.

W/O starting a new thread . . . regarding those scribner jugs . . . .
I was eyeing the 3 gallon model listed below on ebay (all my little pep boys cheapies are lame).
Never had a scribner/vp type . . . . what's the deal on those clear tube spout nozzles?
Do they sell them for this 3 gallon version??? . . .looks like the cap may be the same size as the 5 gallon????

Last time I wen to the river my crap jugs leaked at the caps . .. so I took a piece of plastic trash bag and put it over the threads before I screwed on the cap to minimize the leaks . . . was still a mess.
