This video does it no justice. The highlight of my marine corps career in peace time was when I was awarded the opportunity to go up in an 18.

The best 5 hrs of my life!!

First he tried to get me to yak. When he realized that wasn't gonna happen he tried to get me to pass out with a bunch of high G maneuvers. The G suit and the exercises they thought me prevented that. When he saw I wasn't going down he punched it to mach 1 straight for the Yuma proving grounds where he dropped some 500 pounders and we went for fuel at Yuma air station for lunch. When we went back up he did a short take off and we went straight up for what felt like forever. Up so high the plane wouldn't go any more. As we are falling back to earth he says.... hey corporal lopez! As I'm glaring out the window he says... you have controls! Having no idea what he said we must have fell 20k ft before he says "you gonna fly this piece of shit sometime today?" I was like YES SIR! reached for the throttle and the stick leveled us out and he said... "take the scenic route home lopez" took we a min to get my bearing and search for landmarks I recognized and I got to fly us back to Pendleton any way I wanted. He let me do some crazy high G turns, some zero gravity shit and some upside down stuff. It was the best aircraft ride I've EVER been on!

Not sure how many Cats/Traps you have but there are a few of us that might say daytime OPS are fun. Night time is a totally different story. GOOD VIDEO

Yup. Both seats have controls and Idk if he controls it with a switch or if the rear seat controls are on all the time but I was definitely flying the plane. He had to explain the foot peddles to me cause he immediately knew I was flying it like a video game. Lol. Apparently rudder control does A LOT! in a F18. Once we got a few miles east of Pendleton he took the plane back from me and we landed. I also got a chance to fly front seat in a cobra. Both rewards for being meritoriously promoted twice while attached to a Marine wing support squadron early in my years

That's awesome. Generally, special conditions have to be met/fulfilled in order to land/takeoff at Pendleton. For land based operations, it is a somewhat shorter runway than the Hornet would normally operate from. Sounds like a great experience for you. Belated congrats on the meritorious promos.

Thanks. A reserve squadron was TAD there for 6 months in 98 doing a bunch of qual stuff for a deployment. My unit at the time supported their efforts while there the squadron commander was our XO while they were there. Miramar wouldn't take them (Idk why) and El Toro was ramping operations waaay down and not an option either. The XO liked me and what we did. It was right place right time type stuff.
