all I ever hear is how simple and cheap to rebuild they are.

My experience sucked . Take trans out (hassle), have rebuilt, I reinstall(hassle). End of 5 zone , hit gas, slips like a mo fo. Trailer boat. Trans guys says: “bring it back”
}remove trans (hassle). And repeat process.

This happened TWICE more…

After 3rd time , I ate the money and moved on.. (He did say to “bring it back again” but F that!!! )

Guy who finally fixed it has a trans dyno and realized there was no fluid pressure and that the pump failure was the real issue that was killing the clutch bands.

All that to say, find someone who has a trans dyno and tests the trans after a rebuild.

I dont work on them but perhaps someone on here has a source for Velvet drive work/repairs ?
If you cant find anyone in SoCal try Cook Engine in Portland. We put a Velvet drive in a 19 Spectra yrs ago and they were great to work with. No sure about 2024 staff but its worth a call.

Sierra has the complete overhaul kit. I have only done one, but not extremely difficult. Has about 250 hours on it with no issues. Found service manual online and watched a couple videos.

Go try Turner transmission over on Dover. I think the guys name is Mike. I’ve talked to him a few times while drinking beer at happy hour at that little Mexican joint on the corner of industrial and Kiowa. Carburetor Chuck hangs there too.

try hitting up Huber Marine or BAM ( cyborgtransmissions.com ), either shop should be able to build it to handle any amount of HP you can throw at it.

I'll send mine to one of those shops when its time to rebuild

Danny at Community Transmissions in bellflower did mine. He said not many people will touch them. He even had some clutches laying around for it, and added an extra reverse clutch in mine. Very honest and quick turn around.

I bought a rebuild kit and rebuilt mine in a day. Its such an easy little trans to rebuild. I may even have an extra seal kit if someone wants it for free since my boat was stolen. I belive it fits a Velvetdrive 72C.
