I feel so helpless trying to understand why people commit these atrocities. And even more helpless in trying to understand how to stop them. The media will jump in with countless article on guns, but these sick folks will find other ways and history show they already have done so. OK City had an insane man use a truck load of common fertilizer to kill 146 innocents and we've seen the horror of planes turned into missiles. Gun control is certainly an issue, but far from a solution of preventing massive tragedy.

The big question remains, how to spot the insanity before the horror takes place.......What can we do. How can we do it without violating Constitutional rights?

"THEY" ignore the Chicago example every time it is brought up.

The amsexuals like to bring up Chicago like its some failed experiment in gun control... When in fact there is absolutely nothing that limits the flow of weapons into the area. There is no closed border around Chicago that magically keeps weapons out... There is only the slightest inconvenience in acquisition and a slight legal penalty in possession.

So I will gladly admit the localized limitations on weapons ala Chicago had zero impact on gun violence if you will explain why Australia's measures have had a massive positive impact.

You can have all the gun control laws you want, but in the end if someone wants to commit a crime with a gun, they will go to lengths to get a gun. The laws are only for the law abiding, criminals don't follow the laws, hence that makes them criminals. When the laws aren't followed and not enforced anarchy ensues and we are seeing that with the rise in violence of the left wing Antifa group. They have no agenda other than to cause harm and destruction to anyone who supports any conservative agenda. They are a terrorist group as per their definition - unlawfully using violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. They should be dealt with as a terrorist organization and stop being allowed to operate as they have been. Sometimes you need to violence to control violence, then those who are creating the violence will think twice if there are repercussions, because right now, except in very few circumstances there have been no penalties for wearing masks, beating people, destroying property, and creating public mayhem. You can't pussyfoot around this, you need to nip it in the bud.

This is the work of the participation trophy, time-out, no spanking, no penalties for bad behavior generation.

I don't believe you can compare the US to other countries when it comes to all kinds of issues, we simply have a different culture and issues. When it comes to guns Australia had to "buy back" 600K or something like that, I think the US is 90 Million or some insane number. That is simply a number that is impossible to overcome.

OK let's go down this path for a moment... By definition wouldn't the first step here be to round up and execute every member or suspected member of the KKK? With them out of the way we go after all the so called Militias that threaten violence against Americans. There are probably a dozen groups that would be in line ahead of the ANTIFA groups.

You want to re-think the position or fall back into the Alex Jones fueled stupor you crawled out of to post this crap?

Honestly, I think it is largely due to people not being taught how to think.

Society as a whole has degraded. It is now "us" and "them", and woe be it to someone who tries to actually walk in the middle for they are not a true believer and are someone's enemy, only worthy of scorn. We also do a very good job as a society of dehumanizing those we disagree with.

Yep, just told my family yesterday that we will never live in fear and stop doing things we enjoy. We will be even more conscious of our surroundings and my hopefully soon to be son in law in the Navy said, and don't forget to always watch your 6.

Got to say I'm super impressed the way Vegas and everyone else came together to help. One that stands out to me is taking the fence apart for make shift stretchers and the lines for giving blood. Says a lot for us Americans. I'm also super impressed how the Vegas Sheriff, PD, and medical support handled this horrible situation. I cant remember the guys name who is the leading Sheriff that's been taking most interviews. Dude knows what he's doing and aint taking no BS.

I cant not for the life of me figure out why someone can do something like this.

Do not let live in fear.....

How much of all this violence is directly a cause of the news media? Also our court systems that allow someone to sue for getting shot or man handled after they beat, rape and robbed some one.
It seams that what ever twisted mind out there wants to up the ante and do it bigger and better in their minds than the last.

RIP

you need to figure out what drives these people to commit these acts first. until that is known, and what underlying issues are creating the need for these people to act, violence will not stop. the tools that they use to commit these acts are just that, tools. just think if this vegas killer carried this act out Timothy McVeigh style, how much more damage and death would have been caused? its too easy to blame the gun for this like so many people are trying and want to do since thats their agenda to get rid of guns for whatever reason they feel.

mental health issues are on the raise, health coverage is a joke. Until we recognize the issues of the decline of peoples mental state these problems will continue. That as well as easy access to guns such as vegas and there is no fix.

I agree. I think the world is non stop bullshit. Social Media, Hollywood, Video Games it is a constant barrage of negative violent streaming shit. I can't believe how many people were taking a video of the shooting in Vegas while getting shot at. I would have put the phone down and used my hands to cover my head balls something.

Gun Control will always be the answer provided by the anti-gun crowd. A group who now collectively seems to forget that just over one year ago 84 innocent people were massacred in Paris by a man driving a truck. Which answers the original question of how we can prevent these things from happening?

We can't.

No idea, for the most part I don't think it is really an issue for most. But it only takes one kid to play that game normalize it and execute. You can even run people over in the streets etc on them.

The single largest thing that can be done..... HOLD THE MEDIA ACCOUNTABLE FOR CREATING THE DIVISION IN AMERICA AND NURTURING THE FLAME OF HATRED THAT HAS TAKEN OVER A CENTURY TO GET REDUCED AND ALMOST ELIMIMATED.

I cannot stand the media saying what it says, pointing the finger everwhere else and creating these scapegoats of guns and Trump.

Video games? How about shooting galleries?

Hunting? I mean the target is a living animal.

How about paintball games, where a person is actually the target?

Human are complex, intelligent creatures, I am pretty sure they know the difference.

Humans have also been killing each other for one reason or another since the beginning of time.

Doesn't this suggest that guns are indeed the problem?

And yea acknowledging that does not diminish the magnitude of the solution.

Was going to say the same. By the narrative here, box vans should be banned in France, and we should consider doing the same here!

I've played some of these games. I don't just go around killing people now?

Here are my thoughts on the entire deal. I have had some personality tests done on me a few times, I view the world in a very realistic way from what I have been told. My dad is a conservative but views it in an ideal way sort of utopiaish I guess maybe. To me really fucked up shit has always been happening in this world. Humans have always done the worst most horrible things to each other from what I can tell. Today sick people have the population and the resources to hurt a lot of people in a short amount of time. I don't think this is something new, I also don't think it is preventable in many cases. I generally expect the worst in all situations, I find a little relief in my beliefs that this is nothing new but it is also upsetting believing very little can be done if anything to prevent these events 100%.

What do you consider a positive impact?
I remember reading after the buy back, indeed death by gun decreased.

However, assault was up by almost 50%
Rape was up almost 30%
Robbery up 9%
All manner of violent crime stats up 40 something percent.

Somehow that doesn't sound like a positive impact or one I care to endure?

I think the worst is yet to come.
I think this the work of Antifa and this bastard has kicked off civil war.
Not as we may picture it, but certainly a new form of terrorism that comes not from Islam, but from the sore losers.

Exactly.

Hell, 90 were killed in Paris with firearms... wait don't they have strict gun laws there? More gun laws is DEFINITELY not the answer.

Take a look around people, it's an easy answer!!!!! Degradation of family values, no personal responsibility, you can't spank your kid, kids beating up old people on Youtube, crassness everywhere, more segregation in the past eight years and a step backwards for minority rights every day because of the media and the left. People are angry. Angry at everything.

Make sure to hug and kiss your loved ones today and every day. Buy someone a beer or help them out at Site 6 (instead of heckling), wave next time someone cuts you off in traffic, pick up that McDonalds trash some guy left in the parking lot. Anything. I think we can all be better people without trying that hard.

I think "gun control" is an absolute pipe dream, waste of effort and will NEVER happen. To get to the point of making it nearly impossible to stop an event like this you'd have to eliminate all guns in the US. Nothing even close to anything like that will ever happen. Restrictions on guns always get overcome by loop-holes. If you think ANY gun control is going to stop a mass shooter, you're just as out of your mind as the shooter themselves. This guy could have just as easily stole a semi truck and rammed through the crowd with no guns at all.

Why not instead of pissing in the wind and continuously demanding more "gun control" (a vague term that reeks of political agenda and has no real meaning by the way), why not demand better mental health care which is the root of much evil including violent crimes like these, basic crimes, narcotics, vagrancy, etc.. How about pushing for more drug (prescription and illicit) control, a push to aid our elderly, a push for better education in the US, a push to work with both fuckin parties to get decent health care! Nothing can be obtained because of the huge divide between political parties. First step is bi-partisanship - Get over each other and do what's right and OBTAINABLE for the people of this country. Stop fighting each other and start fighting the real enemies of this country - foreign and domestic! Arguing about gun control is simply wasted air.

This. But you could never make it happen. Who would decide who and what is right and wrong? The Left side would always disagree with the Right side and so forth. We as a whole need to become more centered. We still need the right and left, but there has to be common ground. Once nobody wants to work with the other side, there can be no common ground, than it's more of us against them.

The biggest thing I think there needs to be more common ground on is mental health. Mental health is the biggest problem this country faces. It comes in many forms people don't understand. We as a whole need to look what is causing more and more people to have mental issues. Is it chemicals in our food? is it the constant brainwashing from TV? Is it legal and illegal drug use? Is it social media? Or is it a combination of some or all? Or is it something different all together? Until some of this is figured out, I believe we will have more and more of these situations unfortunately. You can bag on the gun laws, you can ban cars, trucks, airplanes etc..., someone with a mental defect will always find a way to harm people.

I think this is exactly right and very well said.

It is not the media's fault or someone else's fault, it is simply what America has become today and what many American's and their leaders want as the fabric of our culture. A great deal of Americans want a cultural conflict in America, and then stand shocked and aghast at the natural outcomes and events.

When a country has 330 million people and the normal behavior to anyone whom with one disagrees is to attack them, attempt to publicly humiliate them and dehumanize them as Sleek stated, it is just a matter of time before more and more people simply engage in revenge.

These incidents are increasing, not decreasing, whether it be on a smaller scale in protests or in a large crazy scale such as this and Orlando and I can't imagine given how people behave towards one another today, and the tone and examples set by all our leaders today, that it is going to get any better any time soon.

The only guarantee we have to live is right now, tomorrow is not guaranteed. As a country we have been slowly kicking God to the curb. What is happening to our country and seen on a regular basis is proof. I'm not perfect in any way shape or form but I do believe in God. I have personally been delivered from a life of drugs and alcohol without stepping one foot into a rehab center that's the power of prayer. Most people you see in Church today are broken people with a past similar to mine, not goody two shoes like most think. I wish I had all the answers to all the problems in this country but I don't. I have only one answer to all the problems in this country, you just need to have faith and give him a chance...

you will never stop these mass shootings. Gun control is a farce. You take away one gun type theyll end up taking all gun types and then the only people with guns will be the criminals. If some nutjob wants to go out do something like this there is nothing we can do. This man wasnt insane. All signs point to a normal dude with a normal life. money wasnt an issue. One day he woke up and decided he was gonna kill a bunch of people.

this will remain true for all our lives.....You cant fix crazy!

100% security (but nothing to protect you from government)
0% freedom

-or-

0% security
100% freedom

...as one goes to 100, the other goes to 0, and vice-versa.
It's not possible to increase one without decreasing the other.

So we get to pick a compromise somewhere in-between these two extremes.

The first step should be to Get the Mentally Ill into Treatment - real mental health treatment with doctors and medication and HOSPITALS with security ("institutions" - remember "insane asylums?")

MENTAL11G5.jpg

To do that requires screening people (having them see a doctor) to identify those with mental health disorders (from kids to adults).

Providing real mental health care will:

* Reduce the homeless population and reduce crimes by the homeless (a very serious problem especially here in CA) - get the mentally ill off the streets
* Keep the mentally ill from acquiring firearms
* Get the mentally ill out of jails and prisons and into institutions with security

The world is filled with mentally ill people - it's a human disorder

It's like a cold splash of water to the face. The world is not a safe place, it never has been.

This situation reminds me of Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing. You have one guy that is hell bent on creating destruction. He killed 165 people. I am not sure there is anything we as a society CAN do to prevent things like this. There have always been random acts of violence, and there will continue to be throughout mankind. There are evil people in this world who seek to do others harm. Plain and simple.

The gun control activists wasted no time piping up about how we need new laws regarding automatic weapons. I for one thought it was in poor taste for Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords to hold a press conference yesterday.

At a local level, I support a conversation about change. I suspect that if a security protocol is developed at a ground level, like a hotel check in screening, bag screening ( like the airports) or something of that nature, you can keep this from happening again. Passing a federal law to reduce the number of bullets that can be held in a magazine didn't have any measurable effect when it was previously passed, and doubt it will this time around.

Unusual mental health observed by family or friends needs to be acknowledged and dealt with. I am in no way anti gun. I own guns. I received my first hunting license when I was 10, after attending the required safety course. But, when a person amasses the amount of guns and ammunition this shooter had, that could be viewed as a "red flag" of sorts by his friends and family. There is a good possibility that his live in girl friend, who is now in Japan, had the opportunity to observe his "red flag" behavior. I assume the authorities will interview her extensively.

There can be those who slip through the cracks without displaying unusual thoughts or behavior. But, they are not the norm.

If you are looking for a way to deter this you won't find one. Looking for a way to "understand it" - a waste of your time. Under the current format this will never be detected because we LOOKING FOR the wrong ANSWERS THAT DON'T ACTUALLY MATTER.

The reality is we are light years behind other countries in terms of security measures at places like Hotels, Airports, Shopping Malls etc. They figured out a long time ago what we in the USA have yet to figure out. We are in Vegas all the time as I am sure a lot of people on this Board are due to its close proximity - I have been saying for years what a "soft target" it is, especially the Hotels and have been predicting this for years (not the exact thing but some huge terror event in Vegas with massive casualties). You can check into or walk into any hotel (the most expensive or lease expensive) and zero "gate control" off the street our off any parking lot. ZERO baggage check... this F_cker was able to get an ARSENAL up to the 32nd floor suite in Mandalay Bay undetected .... multiple trips for sure (he was alone) likely from a car in the parking lot with long guns and thousands of rounds of ammo and ZERO detection......and he could have done that at WYNN, PALAZZO or any other property in Vegas or almost any other city.

Instead of spending time trying to "understand his motives" and if he didn't get enough HUGS AS A CHILD we should be spending our time installing metal detectors in every one of entry points at these hotels and and bomb sniffing dogs at the entrance to all parking garages.

We "hope for the best"..... and are not anticipating and pro active about preparing for (pro-actively) the worst......

Spend some time in countries that have "figured it out".... the Philippines, Isreal to name a few...... there is NFW you are getting 23 guns including many long guns into a high rise hotel in those countries - you would have never made it into the parking lot in fact....

But we should all feel comforted by the fact that Hillary has the answer - as she always does - let's ELIMINATE SILENCERS - so lucky we all are to have such a bright mind to rely upon for universal wisdom

We need to make prostitution legal in every state. It would give these sick fucks an outlet for their sexual frustrations, allow them to bang out their anger issues and give them someone to talk to. Think about it, every country where prostitution is is legal, there is little crime and everyone is walking around with a smile on their faces.

Fun fact, the guy lived in Mesquite, NV. Prostitution IS legal in Nevada.

I've been all over the world and, you're right, security here in the US needs to be stepped up big time. Outside hotels in Saudi Arabia are 50 caliber machine guns for stopping crazed car-driving terrorists. The driveways to the hotels there have K-rails set up so vehicles have to zig-zag on the property (they can't speed up and crash into the hotel lobby with bombs on board). In many countries every bag and suitcase is scanned as you go into a hotel.

Think about this: You can easily get a baggage cart at any hotel and take bags and boxes and carrying cases - most anything - to your hotel room. And you can do that multiple times. All without raising any suspicions.

A simple example: How many videos are made in hotel rooms using all kinds of tripods, gear, cameras, etc? No one ever questions anything being brought to hotel rooms.

This would help but still would not have prevented the guy from loading up a truck with explosives and ramming it into the crowd. People bent on death and destruction will find a way to carry out there twisted mission.

People call for "gun control" because they feel like they need to do something but don't know of any other answer primarily because they have no need or desire to own guns themselves. If you lived in NYC and said that all cars should be eliminated and we would have zero vehicle deaths these very same gun control people would say that they need cars and it is a different issue. Gun people feel the same way as those do about their cars.

We can ban all guns but they won't go away. We have a pretty bad drug problem in this country and last I checked, drugs are illegal yet you can easily get them.

And if Hillary really did make that statement about silencers it shows why she lost the election. If this guy had a silencer it wouldn't have made a bit of difference. She's been watching too many movies and thinks that silencers completely muffle the sound of a high powered riffle.

Yeah, I TOTALLY disagree. Those countries don't have it "figured out". They live in constant fear and intimidation. Searching everybody everytime they walk into a building or searching every car everytime they go into a parking structure...... sounds more like a prison and less of a society that's doing well.
