I can't think they'd use incompetence as an excuse. I could see them blaming mechanical failure, but not stupidity. This looks a whole lot worse than downed by a goat herder I'd think.

The shoot down occurred at the same time the ship was engaging several drones and missiles fired by the Houthis, the pissant terrorist organization that has upended shipping throught the Suez Canal and operates with impunity because Biden is a fucking moron.

It seems crazy that the ship brought down an F-18. The aircraft has an IFF signature, and an airborne asset control aircraft should have made them aware of its presence. It's a blessing those aviators were able to eject and survive. The missile could have easily completely destroyed the aircraft.

I had a buddy on a Tico class cruiser for a bit. The Antietam. I'm sure he's moved on to something else since they seem to have retired the class. It was a cool looking ship and I got to take a tour of it once.

The new destroyers seem to have morphed into cruiser replacements.

There have been several Navy ships named Ticonderoga, five I think.

In the 80s, I had an employee named Robert that during the Vietnam War was a MM1C deployed on the USS Ticonderoga, CV-14, a WWII Essex Class aircraft carrier. It was commissioned in 1944, and he told me it was hopelessly outdated by his '68-'72 tours.

The ship was deco'ed and sold for scrap in 1975, and Robert liked to joke Gillette purchased the ship and made it into razor blades.

Rumor is there was a second jet involved but was able to avoid a missile. They were returning to the boat after their mission and visually saw Gettysburg fire the SM-2
