It’s been just a little over 40 years ago. I was on temporary duty at March AFB and was handed a 3 day pass to the concert. I took the mattress off my bunk and threw it in back of my El Camino and off I went. From what I remember,it was great time. It’s was one of the better music festivals. I still have my concert shirt.😎

83' Sunday heavy metal day and Monday alternative rock/new wave day.

I was 16 and had the whopping $2 budget, but I survived and it rocked.

300k people in a large dust bowl. Terri Nunn says it was the best festival they ever played. 🤟

I was stationed at March at that time but couldn't get the time off, my little brother was there.

I was there all 3 days.
I have tons of pics. I’ll try to find them later on.
I was 21 yo.
My buddy won a trip for 2 on the local am radio station in Anchorage AK.
(He was one of 5 winners)
So me and another buddy flipped a coin to see who would go with him, I won.

Having been in Alaska since I was 9, I’d never seen anything like that. The beer garden alone held 20,000 people. Sundays attendance equaled the state of Alaskas entire population.
We timed our orange sunshine so that we were peaking when Ozzy hit the stage.
I can tell stories forever about that weekend, from flock of seagulls to Bowie shutting it down with his hamlet stage show.
It was truly an event of a lifetime.

I was there in 83 for heavy metal day. I rode my motorcycle in and chained it to my friends car. Me and the girl friend slept in the trunk of an 1972 Olds 88, it was huge🤣. Good times, I remember being exhausted, dirty, hot and having one of the coolest weekends of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in my late twenties at the time, with a new baby daughter and a growing small business. I wasn’t aware of the US Festival. 🤷‍♂️. Looks like a good time though.

Year I graduated HS. I lived in Napa so a little too far for my budget then.
I do love this set from Judas Priest on YT. For you @C-2. 😁

My very conservative, lilly white parents were there working the food both I believe..they, especially my mom, were completely blown away at how many people were there all f'd up on drugs n alcohol, dropping money mindlessly etc..lol
She went on about it for days like it was the crime of the century....
I didn't go. Don,'t know why exactly. I guess I just wasn't deep into music concerts etc..

Heavy metal Sunday. I was 17 years old and how I survived that I’ll never know. The one thing I remember is the giant water cannons on the side of the hill trying to keep people cool. On that Clay dirt they created the longest Slip&slide in History. That’s what my dumbass was doing, just a pair of shorts on & running down that hill to bellyflop on that Clay & slide for 50 yards.🇱🇷

Heavy Metal day was way more intense than the other days.
300K rockers in one place, at one time, with only a single stage. That's a staggering amount of people.
They didn't have Aquafina or Dasani bottled water back then. It was either liquor, beer, or soda.
Hot as balls during the day, and freezing cold mountain temps at night. Perfect weather for OP shorts and a concert shirt, lol.

I look back on it now and just shake my head, WTH was my mom thinking?

She wouldn't let me go to Cal Jam II though...I was only 11...but my 14-year old brother went!

I was 13 at the time and was so mad my Mom wouldn't let go. I get it now but then I was pissed. ;)
Same. 13 and full of anger I could not get my Uncle to take me!

It was even worse the next year, bands I wanted to see (instead of my family's music) were playing! 🤬

It's all good. I made up for all of the shows I missed with Day On the Green #1 in August of 85! Scorpions, Ratt, Metallica, Y&T!

Where? I know there was a few day on the greens in Oakland. Was it elsewhere?
