the number(u-6) is the same pretty much regaurdless of what website you find it at.

Just came here to add that to the other link i posted from zerohedge, which actually showed a slight growth (bad) in under-employed and unemployed combined.

"The U-6 unemployment number, which accounts for the underemployed and those who have given up looking for jobs, held steady at 14.7 percent."

the libs have to just juggle and or misrepresent numbers to try an dazzel poeple with bullshit.obama claimed 5 million new jobs he's created. 2 weeks before it was 4.5 mil he was claiming. never accounting for the 4.3 million lost in that same time frame. the lib media always uses the term "unexpectedly" everytime they issue the last bullshit but still sad unemployment number. "unexpected" by who?lol. soooo sick of this shit.i cant explian how nice it is to see obama get his ass kicked so bad so that just for a second i can kid myself about our economy not heading for a serious cliff.

It's the way it's always been recorded, Republican or Democrat & never accurate for either. Stupid to try & lay it off on the left. It's definitely higher than 7.8 with the amount of people unable to claim benefits.

And the liberal media is screaming the "news" from the rooftops. This on ABC TV this morning... "It's the news the Obama administration has been waiting for especially after the debate this week"

Who do you think controls the unemployment numbers? Obama and his cronies!

2 different time frames. Loosing 4.3 & adding 4.5 in the same time frame is not possible. Only similarity is they happened under the same administration. How come I don't see any praise for the drop in public sector jobs by a 1/2 million, less government right?

The whole point is the timing of the release. After Wed, they had to rush some positives on the populace to chew on for the weekend. More tail wagging the dog in my opinion, just like all straw polls.

Only poll that counts will be the election itself.

with 1% GDP like we have ,these numbers are impossible. If we were growing at 8% GDP it would be a little more believable. More Gorilla Math. No pun intended.

OT, do you really believe that if the debate had gone better for the President, the unemployment figures would have been different?

Unemployment figures have been routinely released the first Friday of every month for quite a while. IMO, trying to turn all of this into some lefty conspiracy is silly. I agree that the only poll that counts will occur on November 6th.

BTW, it's been a long time and I hope that you and your family are doing well.

If that's true they would have released the figures prior to the debate so o could have stated them to rebuff comments on unemployment.

If Obama wins re election no doubt a thread will exist claiming the election was rigged I can pretty much assure you who will start it

They aren't cooked, that would mean intentionally scewed. Their method of data collection is not an accurate representation. This same method has been used for Right & Left Administrations.

It's great to see people going back to work. I don't like to see the United States struggling so this really feel's great.

I'm delighted for all of you. :)

agree. Intentionally or not, the actual numbers are not correct. Why the public is not educated on that is beyond me. Again maybe to give the US sheeple population the feelings that we are not that bad as a country...

How ironic that the libs even think 7.8% is something worth announcing. As I recall, the Kenyan's promise was around 1/2 of this number after billions of wasted stimulus spending took place yet the numbers just continued to climb. We've now arrived at the point where America has figured out how to survive for itself, in spite of this train wreck in the white house.

Remember to give credit, where credit is due. Every single state that elected a Republican Governor has seen unemployment drop in their states. The campaigner-in-chief is riding on their successes, not his own. He probably doesn't even know who comprises his jobs council - it's been so long since he's met with them.

When terrible unemployment is all these dems have to tout as success it honestly proves how bad things really are.

The only thing worth shouting from the rooftops would be the elimination of this fraud.

We've actually covered that in another thread somewhere, That use of 'Public Sector' jobs is misleading, Yes overall have Public Sector Jobs have fallen, but that number includes Local Municipalities, Counties, & States, sectors under local budget control, not federal control by Congress or Obama, Federal Payrolls have actually risen by about 140,000 under Obama, while localities have been shedding jobs as their tax bases shrink to meet budgetary constraints, as the states/counties/cities can't print their own money.

I think it's actually a bit muddier than that. For example, say a 1 Billion Dollar highway project is underway & employs a total of 500 people (Engineers, City Planners, Construction Trades, etc). A small amount are direct Public Employees & the majority are Private Companies contracted by the state. All of those Private Companies are reported as Private Sector jobs, but are actually being paid for from the Government, correct?

That has already happened in the form of state income tax IOUs. IOUs are currency.

I would guess so as the figures above are Public Sector Payroll, Federal Payroll, when you start adding in all of the military contractors, etc, there are a lot more people working for the government than they tell you with just the numbers they show.

It starts getting much more difficult to figure out exacty what is government work and what is not on a large level, as these private companies are also doing private work as well. So the numbers we are talking about are just government payroll, direct employment in other words, even though there are many many more working for the government through another layer of public/private partnership

Just now watching the financial channel and there appears to be a big bubble (to the bad) coming after the first of the year with the cuts coming to the military and contractors.....apparently the Administration is waiving the "Warn" act (and offering to pay any legal fees incurred by the employers) which would require 60 days notice on those impending layoffs.

I don't know what to read into this but suspicious people could have many takes....are they afraid of the notices pending, or are they just putting these waivers in place because they think they can solve this with the "Lame Duck" congress fixing the financial cliff before the end of the year.......or keep these pending so they can lay it on Congress for not passing legistation , yada, yada, yada.

The amount of growth in the economy does not reflect the numbers. I don't believe in any of the job numbers as the methods are manipulated in how they are figured. It's still my opinion positive numbers had to be released to cover up the debate meltdown. Polls are the same BS......

So are you here officially? Out of retirement so to speak?

How the hell ya been?:D We're doing well. Got a new Grandson from Daughter#2 in June.:thumbsup

They don't want the warn act notices to go out 60 days before because that makes it the first of November right before election day

Congratulations on the addition to the OT family. I stopped by earlier and thought I'd say hello. Don't have much time to think about politics these days, so to answer you question, probably not.

Life continues to be great.

Take care my friend.

Through my years, I've seen a good number of folks on disability of some sort who work pretty hard under the radar for cash. Same hold true for many of the unemployed drawing benefits. They work contract labor jobs long enough to draw benefits and than go find a job as they run out. In many on the northern states it's a big game that's gone on for years in the cold months. Entirely different point than the current job number fiasco, but it;s real and happening.:cool

Where do the "jobs" numbers come from and what's this conspiracy about? Here is some background on how the whole process works.

I loved this the first time The New York Times published it ? a simple explanation about the super-secret process of reporting the nation's Employment Situation Summary, a.k.a. the "Jobs Report" and the "Unemployment Rate" from the bureau of labor and statistics. The cloak and dagger method in detail is below.

Read it and you will have something to say when your friends start quoting Jack Welch and Allen West who are among a host of conservatives that are starting conspiracy theories that the 7.8 percent jobs number for September is some politically-timed conspiracy meant to help President Obama's re-election campaign.

Rep. Allen West tweeted:

In regards to today's Jobs report ? I agree with former GE CEO Jack Welch, Chicago style politics is at work here...

Well, who are the people tabulating the numbers? TPM asked.

Betsey Stevenson, a former chief economist at the Department of Labor under President Obama, said in a phone interview with TPM that the conspiracy theories were misguided in just about every way possible. For starters, the Bureau of Labor Statistics isn?t currently run by a political appointee. For most of Obama?s term, the commissioner was a holdover appointed by President Bush. The current acting commissioner John Gavin is a career BLS economist, not an Obama appointee.

And where do the actual numbers come from? I found this simplified version here.

?The unemployment rate is derived from telephone survey of households; respondents are asked about their employment situation and whether they are looking for a job. (Unemployed who are no longer looking aren't counted in this number)

?The jobs report is derived from a larger survey of businesses owners who report their hiring activity for the month.

?That's why the unemployment rate could decline, as it did in April, at the same time employers reported a net 3,100 job losses

Now for the fun stuff, If you want to know the secret process, continue reading.

From The New York Times:

Wednesday (the prior week), 12 p.m.

Office suites in the Bureau of Labor Statistics go into lockdown. Custodial service is suspended.

Wednesday (the prior week), 12 p.m.

By the end of the week, the Census Bureau transfers household data to the B.L.S. Data experts spend the next few days turning lines of code into publication-quality tables.

Monday afternoon

An economist takes a first pass at the household data and drafts one half of the report.

Tuesday afternoon

A second economist analyzes business data and drafts the other half of the report.

Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.

The economists submit their drafts to a supervisor and a fact checker.

Thursday, 8:30 a.m.

The associate commissioner, division chiefs, branch chiefs and analysts sit around a table and ?go through every single line,? says Abraham Mosisa, a bureau economist, ?every single word, including commas.

Thursday, 11 a.m.

A committee of senior staff members does a final review.

Thursday afternoon

The report is sent to the White House?s Council of Economic Advisers.

Friday, 8 a.m.

A group of financial journalists is taken into a locked room in the Department of Labor. The writers hand over their cellphones and are given 30 minutes to review an advance copy.

Friday 8:28 a.m.

Television journalists are given a two-minute window to get in front of the cameras and prepare for broadcast.

Friday 8:30 a.m.

Precisely at 8:30, according to an atomic clock at the U.S. Naval Observatory, reporters broadcast the figures across the country at exactly the same time that the B.L.S. posts the report to its Web site.

Funny how his name comes up EVERY TIME there is a failure by this President. "Reported unemployed and unreported unemployed" are the true numbers that will never be told......

Lets all celebrate a drop to 7.8% unemployment. You have to be kidding yourself. That is no accomplishment.
