In the last week and a half my job site has been hit 3 times! The first time they broke into my lockbox and got into my trailer stealing all the equipment keys in my desk that I had acquired in the last 30 years plus the equipment key index I got from one of my equipment rental salespeople, in addition to my miscellaneous hand tools, Bluetooth phone speaker, my business cards, business card folder, the power pack for my laptop, but not the cord that plugs into the wall, and my bag of chicharrones. They didn’t take an unopened bottle of whiskey that I got from a sub for Christmas.

Then on Tuesday morning the framers had their bin broken into and stole their portable DeWalt generator. They had their grade-all parked against the doors too. I’m figuring they used my stolen equipment keys to move it, unfortunately the guy who was supposed to lock the bin skipped that part and left the lock in the bin. There were no wheel trails in the dirt, the gate was still locked when we arrived in the morning.

Then this morning as I drove in the gate, the crotchety old framer foreman had pulled in before me, left one side of the gate closed, I got out to open the other side and saw that the chain had been cut and I was ready to chew him out for cutting it. I figured he couldn’t get the combo to work and in his frustration cut the chain to get in. He said the gate was open when he pulled in. Oh shit, what did they take this time? My trailer looked fine until I drove around the back and noticed that my towable 25kw generator was gone. The lock was cut that I used to lock the chain that I ran through the wheels and trailer frame, they even took the chain and one of the empty diesel cans. Mutha fuckers!

I’m currently waiting for the sheriffs to show up to make a report.

Gawd, I can’t wait to be done with this job and out of this town. 😡

A friend Super'd on a Buffalo Wild Wings out there.
Had the same thing happen and had the same feelings.
Doesn't ever want to go back. Hated it so much he retired..... again........
Sad, at one time I had thoughts of moving out there.

This company is so much different than the company I used to work for - I asked at the beginning of the job about security or camera trailers and I was told that they’d take care of that later. After being hit the first time I asked again about some sort of security and was told, “we’re looking in to it”. As they say, you can lead a horse to water….

Today their security guy will meet with me. Only after a $40,000 loss.

I called the rental company and let them know that the generator was stolen and asked if it had a tracker in it. They said that this unit was new and they weren’t able to get one installed before it went out.

I've found a few of our stolen machines in that area. Machine GPS has been a great help, but thieves are getting smarter and disabling them. They usually sell them fast on Offer up, FB Marketplace, or CL. The Sheriff or Swat recovers them from idiots that pay way too little for a stolen machine. If a unit is worth 100k, don’t buy it on Facebook for 20k. There is always a sucker for a cheap deal!

Good luck and sorry for the misfortune, that area is a complete shithole.

When you steal something that has GPS, you can jam the signal until you sell it. We found one of these in a tractor once.

Guards are almost worthless.

Couple months ago i had a bobcat stolen from an apartment building im building downtown hollywood. I asked the guard where is the bobcat? He says oh the equipment company came and got it early in the morning. I said what are you talking about we own that one. Dumbass just took some tweakers word that he worked for United Rentals. Luckily using the tracker i found the thief had driven it up on the road all the way into the hills above the Hollywood bowl and dumped it probably waiting to see if we were tracking it. got it back undamaged and got a new worthless guard.

That sucks. My last job site I bought a travel trailer and put a worker on site with a dog. Kept getting hit until that.

Thieves won't stop. That one I have been dealing with has hit almost every single night on camera for 5 months straight. Video this morning looks like he is in his socks. Tweeking.

Mount this to the building or a pole near the equipment.

Make sure you put a battery-powered flashing strobe or colored light on it so that bad guys notice the camera. Lastly, put up a couple of signs that the property is monitored by video. Other than the light, none of this stuff has to actually work (better if it does, so at least you have suspect info), but the strobe and cameras (mounted high so the tweaker can't get to them) will act as somewhat of a deterrent. Just a suggestion, but it worked on a car lot I used to own. Once installed, nighttime thefts reduced to zero.

Lovely state we live in  Hell, according to nextdoor app there is an organized burglary ring hitting Temecula and Murrieta before midnight stealing elderly folks prescription meds. ~10 cases in one weekend. The daily dread we exist in has to shorten our lives right?

It's crazy how much theft and fraud I heard of in the last few days.

My Realtors husband sent off a few checks to vendors for his business. Stolen in the mail. Scrubbed and name changed. 10k gone.

My Mom decides to buy the LA times subscription from a door knocker. They hack her account and she is out close to 40k. Not sure if they will reimburse her or not.

Hearing about all types of trucks Stolen including mine.

Numerous people response to me is move out of CA. I spent half my life building a business walking away is not really a option.

We usually take off the wheels off the trailer gen set and set up on the ground.
And take the wheels home, don’t leave them at the job site

But
If they have keys to the equipment there goes that.

These have been working well. A guy jumped the fence a few weeks ago to use the porta potty ajust after midnight and they said to him to leave the property and the cops are on their way. He abruptly left. They sent me clear photos of him. They have infrared cameras, lights, speakers all ram on solar

Contractor with 10 locations around Ohio and Michigan, we get hit often on job sites that are new construction and seen from the street.
Cameras help but most of the time they are in and out of a site in 10 minutes, police take 20 to show up if we have an alarm.

I had that happen once, from then on I told the security guard, unless I tell you somebody is coming to pick up any equipment, do not open that gate and if they insist, call the police. When they do come and pick up the equipment that I told you about, get a picture of their drivers license, picture of their truck, picture of the trailer license plate and the plate on the truck. If they refuse any of those call the cops.

We did that with 2 big generators we had running our warehouse back in 2005 in Carson when we first moved in....they didn't steal the generators, but they stole all the lights off of 'em.
