For some girl experience. My middle girl is 4'-11. She has a CR250 and has no problem kicking it over.
Now, it did take some time to figure out how to balance and kick it being that small.

I know 16 year old boys that have a hard time kicking the 150R over when it is hot after a tip over. His dad got him a KX250 last year and he has no problems with kicking it over. Maybe the valves just need adjusted, which is pretty common on that model. My BIL constantly had to adjust the valves on my Nephews 150R when he was racing one.

How bad are the floors?

Immediately broke out the shop and got most of the water up. Basement bathroom cieling is fucked.
Got a couple fans going. So far, I think the floors are ok.
Looks like I'll be doing my basement bathroom remodeling sooner than I had planned.
Gonna hurt my Toy budget.

Look at the KTM 150.. if you go the supermini route you will need to do a top end every 5 hours..

Looked at a Honda 150 today.
I bet it would be fun to toss around. My boy is to big for that though. Especially if we ever took it to the dunes.

If you bring them to Glamis you just need to bring 7-8 new pistons and rings (per bike) and we do a top end on both EVERY night during cocktail time
Hell we teach them how to do it and turn them loose.

If single track and woods riding is what you guys do, have you ever considered a honda xr200 or the xr250r? The 250r is an excellent woods and single track bike. I wouldn't hesitate to take it in the dunes with a paddle on it either. The xr200 is smaller and much easier to handle for a smaller kid. I personally love my 04 xr250r! Also another great used bike for this type of riding is a Kawasaki KDX 200 or 220. 2 stroke kick ass enduro bikes!

The Honda 150's are heavy and have crap suspension that is why they don't compete. They are rock solid, but most likely too small for your daughter.

The Kawasaki 112's are bulletproof...for God's sake you can run ATF in the crankcase and it's probably the best thing. They don't do well in the amateur level because the same kid will run the same track and pick up 10 seconds in a lap on an Austrian bike. Ask any coach. Also, the bike is small for the rider. When the bars are at full turn, there is about an inch and a half less space than a KTM, Husly, Gas Gas. The sponsored Kawasakis are nothing like the bikes bought at the dealership.

Everyone is raving about the Yamaha 125's but you better do your research if you buy a late model one because I am telling you there are issues (Piston to Cylinder relationship). I can give you some father's phone numbers that you can talk to. I wouldn't buy a KTM, Husky, Gas Gas 125 that is fuel injected either though.

Do your son a favor and get him a 250F. At least find someone that has one and ask if he can ride it. I don't know how Colorado is, but I would go to a dealership and see if they have any events where your kids can ride demo bikes. About once a month at different tracks around here you can ride different brand bikes.

250F's are tricky though if you don't do your proper pre-purchase inspection, you could end up with a very expensive headache...keeping (2) bikes under the $7000k range means each bike would need to be around $3500...you are getting an older 250f at that price...

Need to find old man’s trail bikes. I’m really impressed with my 16 ktm 450 I have 180 hard hours on it probably 70% in the dunes. I keep checking the compression and valve adjustment and it’s always good.

I see a lot of 2 stroke recommendations, I'd recommend a 4 stroke for the simple fact of not mixing gas, and riding single track the 4 strokes will be a little easier on the power.

For the boy I'd say a 250 four stroke in whatever color you like, I think all the bikes are really good and are more capable than the rider.

For the daughter maybe look at the Yamaha ttr-230, unless she really does want to do track stuff. The ttr-230 would be a great single track bike in the woods.

My 300tpi is oil injected..no mixing. The ttr-230 is a decent bike but heavy and sluggish. Good for a wife to cruise around.

I spent a day on a brand new 04 xr250r, back in 04. It was a blast to throw around in the woods. Back then, I had a buddy that rode a kdx200 and another buddy that had the ktm200. My nephew just upgraded from his ktm 200. Both rock solid machines. I felt the ktm200 was a little narrow for me, but I'm used to wide through the tank machines.
The xr250 might not be a bad idea for the 1st bike. Just for something for them both to try and see if they're into it.

Started on a KX 80 when I was about 12-13 switched to a XR 350 since we were just trail riding the hills and making tracks is hidden meadows in Yucaipa. The XR was a blast to ride! Sold it when I was about 17. Didn’t ride for a couple years then Yamaha cam out with the yz400 and grabbed one game changer for the 4 stroke and haven’t looked back. Had all kinds of bikes since then and all 4 strokes. Rode a yz125 out in big river last year forgot how much work they are to ride compared to a modern 4 stroke. It was fun and light but wouldn’t want to ride it all day.

Both my son and daughter enjoy the 2016 KTM 200. The KDX 200 is probably a solid choice as well,can’t really go wrong with the XR250 either. Tough choices ahead!
