They're here!! No, I'm not talking about a run down to the 43, I mean just past the outer rigs off Huntington Beach!

We ran south to the 209/181/182 this weekend and were coming home last night with tuna and rockfish (from a stopover at San Clemente) but ran into a big school of Yellowfin 15 miles due South of the harbor entrance. Tuna within range of the half-day boats on June 1st.

Call in sick and get out there!!

Dam...ran over 160 miles Sunday and missed all the tuna. It sounded like many boats on the radio could not find the tuna. Glad you where able to locate them. Any photos and sizes on the yellow fin?

Big. We landed a 50 pounder earlier in the day between the East ends of Clemente and Catalina, the ones we saw last night near the rigs were in the same range. Dolphins on top but big flashes of silver under them 10' or so. A few getting air as they crashed the surface bait.

These fish aren't hitting bait at all. They're full of red crabs. We threw Sardines and mini-Macks at fish the whole weekend and only had strikes on the jigs (Cedar plugs and feathers). I don't think they're line shy, just not interested at the moment.

20 minutes after picking up the 50 lb fish we had a strike we couldn't slow down. Our guestimation is 100lbs or more, the person holding the rod at the moment has spent the majority of his life on the water both professionally and and for fun, I trust his judgement. I was operating the boat at the time and got caught up in the excitement of the moment. If I had reacted properly I could have started backing down and maybe we could have begun to gain some line back and kept from pulling the hook.

The jigs we were dragging were too small for this fish and even fifty pounders. We figured on finding fun-sized footballs out there and we should have been dragging much larger stuff, 8-12" jigs would have served us better that the 5-6" stuff we keep on the boat.

My wife posing with the Yellowfin we landed and you can see San Clemente's east end in the background. She's 5'11" for reference.

A 149 lb Bluefin was brought in 15 miles offshore of Dana Point.

Buddy was showing me pics of a big bluefin caught off Catalina Sunday by a local kid. He is scratching to sell his boat to buy another friends Parker to make it out by this weekend. Crazy Tuna fishing that can be caught on a day trip instead of 5 day
