I don't believe for a moment that social safety nets cause poverty/dependency/laziness but will acknowledge there are a visible minority that make it look that way.

Having said that, lets suppose for a minute you are given absolute control over this countries social programs and your number one goal is to reduce violence.

Your budget consists of the entire prison budget, the entire welfare budget, and 50% of the municipal court budget. You will be rewarded with 10% of the money you save over a 20 year period but will only be given that money if you have met a stated goal of 50% violence reduction sustained for 5 years at the end of those 20 years.

How do you spend the $$$

Build more prisons right now...
Bolster at risk education systems...
Etc etc...

Tell me what you think turns this ship around.
A good start would be to change the direction/decisions being made by people like YOU.
The ideals that you cherish are what is part of the problems. :yikes

OK I'll bite...

Go ahead and list for me my top three ideals that you believe are hurting this country.

The only rule is you have to demonstrate its "my" ideal (and not the right wings liberal straw-man) by reference my previous posts.

And while we are at it I have noticed that not a single one of you pussies has even attempted to answer my budget allocation question.

Squeezer....you're as lost as last years Easter Egg.

You think spending money is going to reduce violence? Just how do you regulate human behavior? Last week we had a killing over $2 that was lost in a crap game.

You gonna make people stop having babies out of wedlock and being raised in a setting where a kid is just another $192 a month in SNAP benefits?

You gonna MAKE people go to work? You gonna MAKE people get an education?

I don't know what planet you're living on but here in the real world people do what they want to and you're not gonna make them change unless THEY want to.

This coming September will be my 20th Habitat for Humanity build in the last 10 years. We do two a year. Our group does all the framing and sheathing from the slab to the roof. The people that qualify for these homes
have to put in so many hours of sweat equity as part of their low interest loan agreement. Here's the kicker...of all these houses we've worked on they were all built for single black mothers and their kids. Not a single one had a father in the picture.
The last one we did back in May was for a black lady in her early 30's with 4 boys ages 6 to 16. They were there waiting for us at 6:00 a.m. and were there until 7:00 pm that evening. Now they didn't know much about home building but they helped
haul lumber, bring tools, and staple up the house wrap. These kids were well mannered and you could tell their mother had a big influence on them. They have a chance to come productive citizens.

But you have to consider that the neighborhoods where we build these homes aren't the greatest in the city. They find a vacant lot, purchase it and we build a house. This particular neighborhood was in southwest Memphis and when I say it was in the middle of the hood I ain't bullshittin. Habitat provided 4 ARMED security people to guard our trucks while we were on the site. It's been that way for 90% of the builds we do. The people taking possession of the homes know this and willing accept it just to have a decent place to live.

The Mom and her kids personally thanked each and every one of us after we finished working and as I drove away that night I just hoped those kids wouldn't get sucked up into the lifestyle prevalent in the area.

This woman made the personal choice that she was getting off public assistance, getting a job and trying to raise her kids to do the right thing. And that right there is what it's gonna take to stop the violence and the hatred.

It comes down to an individual decision and that's where you liberal thinkers run off the track. You can't legislate individual responsibility and you can't legislate morality. You can spend all the money you want to and it won't change a thing.

Look at the billions spent on Head Start programs since the 60's

Look at the billions spent in the so called War on Drugs....

All that and look where we are now.

After my Dad came back from Viet Nam in the early 60's he took a job as a gas station attendant in our small town. Neither him or my mother went past 8th grade in school. They raised 3 kids in a two bedroom one bath rental house in an area called Hicks Town because it was a bunch of rental homes built along a creek where poor white "hicks" lived. My Dad built race car engines for people at night and on the weekends, did carpentry work for people and taught me how to build. We did farm work for people, chopping cotton and picking cotton, hauling hay bales...whatever. My parents saved enough money to buy a $4000 dollar house when I was in the 6th grade and later when I bought my first house, my Dad told me that he lay awake a many a night wondering how he was gonna make the $36 dollar a month house payment...but he always did.

We didn't have much but we took pride in what we did have.

My Dad went on to take a job in a cotton gin and later would become part owner of it. He passed away a year and a half ago and at the time was a very successful business man. He and my Mom owned a couple of small businesses.

Personal choices is what it's all about. You either want it or you don't.... My father taught me that is was perfectly fine to help people that want to help themselves...giving people free handouts is not the solution.

You can't Government spend that into anybody.....

Dude,

Squeezer will never understand this. He was raised on the "Public Nipple" and has been dependent on it his entire life. Self sufficiency is not in his vocabulary nor is he able to conceptualize an individuals ability to raise themselves out of poverty without the "Big Washington Nipple" there for them......don't waste your keystrokes here.........you mind as well try to describe color to a color blind person;)
