Does anyone have any experience with the Trane XV17 or XV18 variable speed condenser? Just wondering what the benefits are between the two and if the 75 stages vs 700 stages is that noticeable. Thank you in advance

Where do you live?

I dont work with very many Trane units but variable speed outdoor units are all relativly the same. I dont hting you can notice the difference between the two. I would be carefull going with the top of the line unit with Trane, Carrier or Lennox. The thermostats are proprietary and if you ever have a problem you are shit out of luck if they have a supply issue like they did during Covid.

Variable Speed is the way to go with any manufaturer

I have the XV20 in my house and absolutely love them, so quiet and very very efficient. zero complaints the 18 is will save you more on your power bills but you spend a tad more up front.

I had an American Standard for 20 years, and other then one service call, was never maintained.

I replaced with a Trane because of price in 2016. One service call so far. I ended up paying a portion of the bill, so the warranty is not “Free”.

The new Trane I got in 2016 was a noticeable difference. I don't believe mine is variable speed. I'm in Phoenix.

Nothing stops a Trane…. Until you turn it on. Atleast that’s what every HVAC tech I worked with said.

Not to thread jack but I got boned hard byTrane. We had two units installed in our r. v. garage when it was built about 6 years ago.The front unit took a shit right after the warranty expired. Needed a new fan motor.very expensive fan motor . A year later the computer brain goes on the fritz. No parts available. Get on wait list for parts. Wait two months and told they don't make the part anymore and all of those they do have in stock are reserved for warranty customers. So have to buy an entire unit , the inside and outside units as the heat pump isn't compatible with any other unit. The kicker is that the trane units are built by Mitsubishi now.Hoping the other one holds up for a while. Don't want to spend another 3500 to replace the other one.

I would never consider a Trane after seeing the problems that two of my friends had with them.
