What say you to trailering a 5,150#/24' Formula 240BR cross-country with a Porsche Cayenne (towing capacity of 7,700#)?

Yes? No?

Did fine with 5,400#/21.5' boat/trailer:

But I believe I once read one shouldn't exceed 80% of the rating (6,160#)? True?

The Formula (trailer, fluids, etc.) might be ~7,200#.

If the trailer has functioning brakes I would not have a problem doing it. Just drive cautious and give yourself plenty of distance in traffic.

It’s not the pulling—it’s the stopping.
Hills, freeway speeds and just some city driving situations that require a little bit heavier braking you will feel like you’re being pushed.

Length has nothing to do with it unless you’re over the states legal length.
As stated above, as long as you can stop when needed you’re good.

Amazing durable transmission in that rig. It's all about brakes.
I had disc brakes on our WB Boats trailers, they worked great and towed to the river and back all the time with a Tacoma V6.

I wouldnt tow it any long distances. Even my Jeep Gladiator gets pushed around by my 21' boat. Plenty of power to pull it, braking and backing it up it wants to push the back of the jeep sideways when turning.

Having done a fair amount of long haul towing I would have no hesitation launching or moving the boat around town with that.

However, I would be very concerned about a cross country trip. My 2 biggest fears would be having to make a straight line emergency stop - jack knife! Or the really scary situation for me would be 75-80 mph downhill passing a row of semis with a decreasing radius right hand bend that you can’t see around. The truck wake wants to push you off the road and that Porsche would have a hard time keeping the whole rig from doing a tank slapper that at best will just scare the shit out of you, at worst ??? 😳

FWIW…

How much does a Cayenne weigh?

My Realtor drives one. Should I ask her if I can borrow next weekend. I need to tow my boat to town to fill it up. I can get a feel for its abilities.

I appreciate the offer, but though it sounds like it's probably doable (with caution and the best braked trailer possible), I'm realizing it'd be much, much easier to just have the boat shipped around.

And I could then drive something more fun cross-country.

Thanks, everyone.

I’ve had people tell me that towing a trailer makes you stop shorter than without, because of the trailer brakes 🤣

No advice on the tow vehicle, but I'm living the dream in a 240BR, are you bringing it to LHC or do I need to get over there and check my garage...? Awesome boat, you'll be happy!

You could do it, but you'd be pushing your risk profile pretty high.. It's all good until something unexpected happens, then it's not.

I'd say my safety, and beating up my nervous system up for days on end, isn't worth the several grand I'd save.

Big difference between a clear sunny day and a windy azz full of rain day!

And then add in inclines and curves?

Just cause you Can do something, doesn't necessarily mean, you should.

I'll be ordering it or the 270 after the Miami boat show this Spring.

I've really liked the thought of a performance boat and participating in some poker runs, but for the majority of the time I'm on Lake Travis (Austin, TX) the Formula is just a much better fit.

I'll still plan to have it shipped to LHC and LOTO for a couple events and I'll just spectate (in comfort!).

I tow my wave tractor around town with my range rover sport. Hardly know its back there at about 6800pounds and rover is rated to 7700 similar to the Cayenne. Now the old silverado 1/2 ton the brakes suck and the tranny doesn't shift gears worth a damn I hate towing it with that thing I assume its rating is around 7K. So for cross country its kinda of a toss up in my opinion if the road is not too hilly and no snow/rain I'd probably go for it. I'd hitch it up and give it a test run and then decide in my case I would do it in the one car but not the other.

I really just liked the idea of being self-sufficient. Trailering sucks even if everything goes right.

But this is very good to hear.

Excuses me choosing the easier option.

Having towed with a VW Touareg (same chassis, transmission, suspension etc as the Cayenne). Up to 6k lbs, it was a beast! It was actually comfortable to drive, and you didn't get out of the car exhausted at the end of the day. Towing the same load behind a 3/4 ton diesel wasn't an improvement.

No question i would tow across the country with one.

Panic stops will fuck up your day. Anything close to square (tire contact patch to contact patch X4) is dicey in the absolute best conditions. Add speed, corners, weather, ect and shit can get ugly fast.

In person it's pretty small. Met up with my realtor earlier. Hers doesn't have a hitch. It would look small towing my 26' boat. But I would try it out and if your not comfortable have it shipped.

I remember years ago towing my old boat with a land cruiser it towed smoother than my dually. And if I didn't watch the speedo I would hit the speed limiter. Might be the same with a cayenne.

I once towed our new weekend warrior 37ft 5th wheel loaded with toys.
11000lb trailer, few 1000 in toys. No problem for my F350..
What it didn't know was trailer was closer to 15000 alone.
I found out later they stamped weights before interiors were done.
The attorney liked that info 😁

Nice, I'm in the hill country as well! Canyon and Travis are low, but I found LBJ is a cool lake to use in the meantime. They have a sandbar to beach and hangout, something I really like as I don't care how big a boat is I'd rather hang out in the sand and water, instead of a lilly pad haha

I slip my Waverunner at Sandy Creek so haven't visited anywhere else (yet).

I have golfed Horseshoe Bay and the water looked nice.

This exchange first made me rethink a performance boat:

So what made you want to switch from the cat?

Let's face it the Skater wasn't a raft up boat, I got tired of the small cockpit, no ability to get out of the sun & or basic creature comforts.

Not cool, but the Formula should be a great raft-up and shootout/poker run viewing platform (bimini, lounger, swim platform, head).

For what it's worth, it's a short wheelbase. 114".
A short bed Chevy truck is 119"
There's a considerable difference towing with a long bed std cab vs a crew cab long bed, with the same trailer weight.
My son in law had a '14 ish Cayenne, but he only pulled a RZR on a tandem axle trailer. The power and brakes were pretty good.

Put in my build order today and remembered this thread.

Added the trailer hitch just to keep my options open.

What are the specs of your order? Congrats, these SUVs are incredible.

I have a GTS and love it. I’d tow long distance with it.

Sweet 911 configuration. Not over the top but, dialed in. Manual transmission as well.
