Trailer bunks

I’m going to replace the bunks on my trailer. (2002 extreme) want to gather all the material, so when the boat is off the trailer, I can get r done. From what I can see, before taking it apart. There are 3/8”or 1/2” bolts sticking through with double nylocks on them. Are these carriage bolts counter sunk on the top side, and the little square under the head is what is dependent on bolt spinning? Or counter sunk with washer and hex head? Since the carpet is on there I can’t tell? By the way the carpet is stapled on and it’s between boards and steel trailer plate, I assume it has to be something that holds itself?

On my old trailer I counter sunk them with a hex head and washer. I just cut an X in the carpet over the hole. I really need to do them on the current boat trailer. Not sure how much longer I can duct tape them together.

Usually square part of countersunk part is just crushed into the wood.

correct. i have never been able to just unbolt them, the bolt usually just spins. grinder with a death wheel or sawzall are going to be your friend.

Beoke azz jet bötér here, just a few ugga duggas and the carriage bolts are self counter sunk.
Yeah, above the carpet.
Stainless steel carriage bolts.
Nylocks.

But my junk is almost 50 years old.

Just food for thought I over killed mine with stainless u bolts

I bought cordless stapler to do mine. So much easier. I went thru about a 1,000 staples. You can carpet them on the trailer or off. Much easier on your back and neck if you do it while they are off

Yes carriage bolts. If wood is soft tighten until flush with wood or a little more(wood will shrink). If wood is too hard, countersink. If bolt head is left up the carpet will wear there and you’ll end up with metal hitting boat. Usually holes in trailer are rusted, wire brush and sand area, touch up paint. Use stainless or at least galvanized staples. I’ve done it a couple times have everything you need, launch boat replace bunks, go boating
