I pull a 38ft gearbox with my f250 non dually. Pulls it just fine. The downside to the 6.0 is it doesn't like ur foot buried in it. Ull make bad things happen. If u keep the boost around 24 lbs and the rpm at 2100 or so u just let the truck do what its gonna do. With this advice u will pull hills slow but u wont blow any thing up.

Now that u have the truck have ur heads studded and install the entire bulletproof diesel kit not just the egr cooler. The 6.0 weak link is the egr system the oil cooler and the bolted in heads that like to separate under extreame loads.

Great advice. Don't forget the snap to connect fitting, dummy plugs, stand pipes and a coolant filter while you are at it. Like Mcrib said the oil cooler having such small passages is the main culprit for the egr system failures.

Thanks for the tips that's why I got something with low miles so I can fix those things early but I heard on the head gaskets and arp studs if you don't mess with upgrades they shouldn't be a problem I definitely plan on the bullet proof egr and oil cooler for sure

How much does your 38 ft way dry ? The ones I'm looking at are roughly 9,000 to maybe 12,000 dry the gears I have are 430's so that should help on the lower end

They heaviest ive had it was 16897. That was loaded with a rhino, 3 quads, water, and food and clothers for 4 days in glamis. Idk off hand but my dry weight is like 12k ish? Loaded down im 789 lbs over on my rear axle. Empty no probs. 5th wheel/goose necktowing is the only way to go.

Keep it at 34 or bigger. There is lots of nice ones with big popouts between 34 and 38. Mine is actuall a 375 but its 38 11 bumper to pin. You could go 45' with a 1 ton dually and be good to go. Just dont go below 34. Ur truck will look like it has a vagina with a bitty trailer. Lol

I have an 05 GMC 2500HD Duramax with 185,000 miles. Truck is stock except for add a leafs on the rear. Just pulled my 38' Gulf Stream Wide Open to the FairPlex RV Park yesterday, got on the 40 and set the cruse control at 62 where I get my best mileage. The only thing that slows us down is dumb ass drivers and the construction. 12,600 lbs no toys but loaded with everything I need while working away from home.

Non commercial class A license needed for over 10,000 pounds bumper pull or 15,000 5th wheel hitch. Check out the laws for California.

I have a K3500 and tow an Attitude 30FSAK.

I have a Dodge 3500 Dually and pull a 40' toy hauler. It pulls just fine. The weak link for Dodge is the trans, and I just had that rebuilt with a stronger billet torque converter, larger pan, external cooler etc... It pulls just fine. Im at 16k on weights loaded. If you go camping at campgrounds, I would seriously consider keeping it under 35'. Many campgrounds don't allow for over 35' and some of the ones that do are a PITA to turn the trailer around in. We have tried to take ours to Yosemite, but forget it....damn sites that are large enough are always booked. I find myself tent camping more these days than using the trailer!

Going through the whole 6.0 nightmare right now with two trucks, an 05' and 06'. Full bulletproof kit with head studs will set you back $7,500, and that's no injectors. Both trucks injectors started taking a shit around 70k miles. Now on the other hand I have an 02' with the 7.3, nearly 200k miles, chipped/exhaust/intake and still runs like a rapped ape! I sold one 6.0 already and most likely going to put the other up for sale next week. The 6.0's will not take the punishment a 7.3 can, bulletproof kit or not, period! Not trying to rain on your parade just giving some advice I wish I New Years back, take it or leave it. IMHO, buy a 7.3 and put 3k into the trans and enjoy miles of trouble free running. If you talk with an honest mechanic that installs bulletproof kits for the 6.0's, he will tell you that the 6.0 was a great design from an engineers stand point but unfortunately thinks didn't workout the way they were intended...

That's kind of why we are looking for, something not to big so we can kind of go anywhere without having to worry about being to big , we plan on going to the beach and up the coast to my brothers house by Pismo

I talked to our mechanic at work and he's installed the bullet proof kits and so far so good, I was looking for a 7.3 and found this 06 with low miles and a good deal, I have done some reading on the 6.0 and there are some people that have had no issues at all maybe luck of the draw and I didn't want to spend 65 k on a new 6.7 so I'm trying this route and hope it works

I have a 7.3 crew cab one ton, and a 26FS WW. On the scales fully loaded, I'm at 19.6k, just under the 20k limit. I have 37s and 4:56 gears, and it tows fine this way. I also have a gear venders on it, for when I'm not towing inside CA. ;)

just wanna mention i have a good friend with a 6.0 and she has left it bone stock. she drives the fuck outa that thing, and tows a trailer way bigger than mine. she makes sure all the weight limits are not exceeded, and has never had one problem with that truck.

personally, i think the fact that she has left it stock, and doesn't tow over weight, is why her truck has lasted so long. she has prolly 150k on it now.

I've never had the head studs done, is it a big job raising the body to do it? Thanks.

Actually. Lifting the body of takes 4 hrs off the labor. U still get charged for it but the mechanics make out. The one time I needed mine done the mech took the motor out. Under warranty of course

Before you drop thousands into your 6.0 consider doing a few things. Don't fall into the hysteria that your truck is junk. Your truck is just a lil high maintance and needs extra TLC.

- Edge CTS digital monitor - with EGT probe ($3-400). Monitors all your important temps, monitor your Delta (difference between engine oil temp and engine coolant temp, should be less than 15 degrees on a flat surface going 65 mph).
- Oil Changes every 5K, Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic (these trucks love synthetic, helps injectors, buy on Amazon cheapest place to buy, free shipping)
- Fuel filters every 10k - helps save injectors
- Only use motorcraft filters
- Coolant filter, easy to install and follow the directions. I bought mine from performance machine and am happy with it.
- Drain and refill with like colored coolant, should be Ford Gold or CAT Red ELC. (I do not recommend chemical flushes at this point, you will likely dislodge crap and plug your oil cooler).

Then drive the tar out of it until it blows up or something breaks. THEN do all the bullet proof stuff. No reason to do it early. I got this from a very honest 6.0 mechanic. I follow the above on my 6.0 with 90k and I have had absolutely no problems. (knock on wood)

Unless your reading the PSD forums from Canada where it gets really cold there is no dispute about oil weights. 15W-40 for Dyno oil or 5W-40 for Synthetic. I wouldn't deviate from that. Regarding towing, the gauge I mentioned is a must have and with your truck you can tow most any toy hauler you choose. It will allow you to monitor your temps and if something is getting about of wack you can slow down etc...

Guys put programmers on these trucks and tow their toy haulers at 80 up hill and wonder why it blew up. Some trucks are forgiving with this types of stuff, the 6.0 is not. Once you bullet proof it with head studs you can get more aggressive with it. Until then, just drive it normal, do maintenance and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thats what I have in mind about towing with this truck is taking it easy and wanting it to run well for a long time, I like the idea of getting the monitor for towing , this truck is like brand new and I want to keep it for a long time , i just need to figure out the toy hauler we want , and sell my 67 Hallett

You bought a nice truck.

I had an '06 F350 Lariat 4WD single rear wheel and it was the most comfortable truck i've ever owned. I did have problems at 90k with the cooler and head gaskets which were under warranty. I kept the truck bone stock as well, it had plenty of power for our 32' Weekend Warrior. I did trade it in after it came out of the shop for the motor problems but that is the milage that i trade them in anyway (replaced with an '12 F350 Lariat).

It will be a great truck... as mentioned earlier, those that blow are those that have chipped, for an extra 80-100 HP and try towing 17,000 lbs uphill at 80MPH, and they wonder why they blow.... Mine is 06, 6.0 with 6" Fabtech, SRW, running 12.5 x 35 R18's, Toyo M/T, I tow 32' Wildcat fiver that comes in @ 12,500 loaded, I have 118,400 & change with some minor issues, biggest factors with the 6.0 are cooling & voltage, low Voltage leads to FICM loss or Injectors, I have had FICM loss, as mentioned change out coolant filters often and sooner when towing, I recommend Blue Spring upgrade to Fuel Pump and upgrade FICM, I raised HP with FICM upgrade and kept it at 40 HP only, truck runs better with more fuel dumped in it.... richer and yes a little more black exhaust than stock, but this motor was designed to run with the older diesel, which lubricated better and didn't run as lean, also you will find better fuel mileage with the FICM mapping, you are upgrading the fuel system and not fucking with the timing and advances, your 6.0 will love the extra care.... good luck, other than that and some gauges, leave it stock, they run great... wedge
