Is it legal to tow in the middle lane while obeying the speed limit? This is in Ca. 3 lanes each direction.

During the busiest traffic hours, they will usually allow you, and the trucks, to run in that lane. The traffic coming on, and getting off, are a real pain in the ass. Especially because no one seems to know how to "Merge" any more....Ray

Actuually no, doesn't matter what time of day it is or how the traffic is. Counting from the inside lane on a 3 lane the number 2 lane is only for passing. It is a ticket. On a 4 lane then you're allowed on the number 3 and 4 lanes.

How about driving on streets that have signs posted, "no trucks over 3 tons" ?

My pick up has a gross rating over 3 tons.

They know how to merge Ray, they just aim for you if you're towing.

My wife swears towing a boat makes us invisable.:D

If you read the law all of our dumb asses would be in the right lane if we were doing the speed limit, I was towing to Florida, its 2 in the morning I am in the left lane because the right was rough as chit State trooper pulls up on my azz and flashes his lights now there is not one car for miles, of course I jamed the breaks on "AZZ HOLE" the he lit me up. I get over, role the window and as he passes I am calling him, his mother, and family all sorts of chit, so he pulls me over. He informs me that I am supposed to be in the right lane, that the left lane was for passing only, I quickly told him that if he would have been in his proper lane I would not have been in his way:champagne:...Long story short he told me I needed to stay in the right lane and then he let me go, what did he do when he pulled off he got in the damn left lane, which see monkey do, I got back in the same lane and kept on truckin:fingers:

If drivers are passing you on your right doesn't that indicate that you're in the wrong lane and impeding the flow of traffic.

Is 70+ going too fast?

Move over and let drivers pass. Think of others not just yourself.

My dad has had a Class 1 license for years. Has gotten out of two tickets for that stated reason.

CHP: " Do you know why I pulled you over?"

Dad: Probably because I'm not in the number 4 lanes"

CHP: " Well if you know that why aren't you in it?"

Dad: " Maybe you want to ride with me and help me deal with all the jack-asses trying to merge and the idiots is the number 3 lane that won't let me over?"

CHP: " Sir, have a nice day and be careful"

Anyone ever get pulled over by CHP because he wanted to check out your boat? Few years ago on the 210 freeway, I get lit up, I knew I wasnt doing anything wrong. Guy comes over the hailer and tells me to exit off the freeway. Walks up to the truck, "hope you dont mind, but I really like your boat, I have been looking for one just like it, you mind if I check it out".

I spent like 15 minutes with the guy talking in a parking lot. When we were done he stopped traffic on the side street so I could do an illegal u turn to get back to the on ramp and then gave us an escort back on to the freeway with full lights and sirens. Kids loved it, and I have to admit I did feel pretty bad ass for a few moments.

I figured I would be nice about it since I travel that freeway alot and maybe earn a few get out of jail free points with the guy.

21655. (b) Any trailer bus, except as provided in Section 21655.5, and
any vehicle subject to the provisions of Section 22406 shall be
driven in the lane or lanes designated pursuant to subdivision (a)
whenever signs have been erected giving notice of that designation.
Except as otherwise provided in this subdivision, when a specific
lane or lanes have not been so designated, any of those vehicles
shall be driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as
practicable to the right edge or curb. If, however, a specific lane
or lanes have not been designated on a divided highway having four or
more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, any of those
vehicles may also be driven in the lane to the immediate left of
that right-hand lane, unless otherwise prohibited under this code.
When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same
direction, the driver shall use either the designated lane, the lane
to the immediate left of the right-hand lane, or the right-hand lane
for traffic as permitted under this code.
This subdivision does not apply to a driver who is preparing for a
left- or right-hand turn or who is entering into or exiting from a
highway or to a driver who must necessarily drive in a lane other
than the right-hand lane to continue on his or her intended route.

Layman's terms.... stay in the far right lane unless you are passing!;)

Below is the section that covers what you are discussing. 21655 above, for these discusions says you have to use "Truck Lanes" when they are provided.

Don't get bogged down in some of the lingo. 22406 just describes your vehicle set up when towing, it says this section now applies to you. I have the easy to use break down here.

22348 C is what you would get a ticket for as described by our scoflaw!

If there are two lanes in one direction, you have to use the right lane except to pass.

Three lanes you still have to use the right lane except to pass. Never allowed in the fast lane of the freeway in this senario of three or more lanes.

Four or more, you get the right lane and the lane next to it. That means the right two lanes.

Rememeber all the time the 55 MPH when towing, so if you move over to pass and tell them "hey I was passing" , well I bet now you were over 55MPH. If he wants to get you.... He will....

22348. (a) Notwithstanding subdivision (b) of Section 22351, a person shall not drive a vehicle upon a highway with a speed limit established pursuant to Section 22349 or 22356 at a speed greater than that speed limit.
(b) A person who drives a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than 100 miles per hour is guilty of an infraction punishable, as follows:

(1) Upon a first conviction of a violation of this subdivision, by a fine of not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500). The court may also suspend the privilege of the person to operate a motor vehicle for a period not to exceed 30 days pursuant to Section 13200.5.

(2) Upon a conviction under this subdivision of an offense that occurred within three years of a prior offense resulting in a conviction of an offense under this subdivision, by a fine of not to exceed seven hundred fifty dollars ($750). The person’s privilege to operate a motor vehicle shall be suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to subdivision (a) of Section 13355.

(3) Upon a conviction under this subdivision of an offense that occurred within five years of two or more prior offenses resulting in convictions of offenses under this subdivision, by a fine of not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000). The person’s privilege to operate a motor vehicle shall be suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to subdivision (b) of Section 13355.

(c) A vehicle subject to Section 22406 shall be driven in a lane designated pursuant to Section 21655, or if a lane has not been so designated, in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb. When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, the driver shall use either the designated lane, the lane to the immediate left of the right-hand lane, or the right-hand lane for traffic as permitted under this code. If, however, specific lane or lanes have not been designated on a divided highway having four or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, a vehicle may also be driven in the lane to the immediate left of the right-hand lane, unless otherwise prohibited under this code. This subdivision does not apply to a driver who is preparing for a left- or right-hand turn or who is in the process of entering into or exiting from a highway or to a driver who is required necessarily to drive in a lane other than the right-hand lane to continue on his or her intended route.

Actuually no, doesn't matter what time of day it is or how the traffic is. Counting from the inside lane on a 3 lane the number 2 lane is only for passing. It is a ticket. On a 4 lane then you're allowed on the number 3 and 4 lanes.

If you stop to realize the people exiting the freeway/highway, as well as the people coming on, are going slower than me pulling a boat in the #2 lane. So, I AM passing. Not to mention the courtesy of moving over to the #2 lane to allow a motorist to enter safely with out me having to slow down for them....Then the a$$holes want to stay right on your 4 o'clock, beside your trailer.....These are the reasons I prefer to travel in the wee hours, no morons, and I can go all the way from Needles, to Newbury Park on CC.......Me and the trucks, and I'd much prefer to run with the trucks, than the cars....

I have never heard of a CAR being ticketed for NOT passing in the #2 lane. Is it OK for a car to just run side by side with a car in the #3?......I also agree, if you're being passed on the right, regardless of YOUR speed, you're in the wrong lane, move over.......Az law says, "keep right except to pass", and it applies to everyone.......Too bad the snowbirds can't read.....Ray

I guess I don't understand what you mean about "a car passing in the #2".

Cars can use any lane. We are talking about towing. Cars don't have to be passing. They can drive as slow or fast as they want in the right lanes, middle lanes.

gotta love NV. here it is not only legal to tow in any lane, but preferred:thumbsup

the idea is to get out of the way of all the merging traffic. i regulalry see 18 wheelers in the fast lanes, I tow in the left lanes, and oh yeah, did i mention we dont have the GAY 55mph for towing or trucks either?

sure do miss that weather though.:D
