Total hip replacement, whose done it?

I’m at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, underwent an anterior double hip replacement yesterday. They had me upright and taking steps to walk within hours of surgery yesterday, and I was feeling pretty confident.

Today on the other hand has been ROUGH! Significant pain, swelling, can’t hardly lift either leg at this point. Can’t sit up off the side of the bed without serious assistance. I’m being discharged tomorrow and not feeling so good about what the next couple days will entail at home. I’m hoping this is the worst of it, trauma from the physical procedures combined with fatigue from PT.

Im sure we’ve got a few inmates with prosthetic hips here, RDP community is vast. Who’s got some wisdom for me?

Ive known a few folks who’ve had knees and hips, they all say a knee was worse, but I’m starting to seriously reconsider my desire to get them both done at once.

My mom just went through a right hip at 84.
They had here up just like you. First few days she was tender but fought through her scheduled exercises ( do not not do your exercises no matter what). You will regret it.
been about 5 months now and she is moving awesome and no pain.

So the shoulder thread got me thinking on this hip of mine. it’s getting bad now. Been bone on bone for a while now. Got X-rays back in Feb after pain got worse and worse over a few years. Used to be intermittent but is all the time now and much more sever. Surgeon said to wait until I couldn’t...

One a year ago and a knee in October , my rehab , kick the walker to the curb get up and atem and walk , sit stand squat repeat never Had PT beyond the home Nurse the first week . She had me doing baby steps I said fuk it lets go for a walk back to my shop in 14 days gets better every day and pain pills SUCK

Had the left done a year ago @ 57. I coulda swore I blew it out this week as the pain was worse than before the surgery. Now the pain is mostly gone unless I twist in a certain manor.

Had left one done 2 years ago. You will be off pain meds within the next couple days and slowly getting back your abilty to move. Therepy should start tomorrow and just be careful with your movements as it is very important not to fall. Good luck!

Had my Right side done As stated I was Walking (with Help Around the Bed as soon as I was out of Surgery Mine was Bad Bone On Bone No Socket left

Have not had one but had family members that have, they get you up and moving quickly to prevent scar tissue from forming.

A few of them were long enough ago that they went to an inpatient PT/recovery unit for about 10 days. It is kind of wild they send you home the day after now. Just keep moving. A couple of years ago my wife's grandmother misunderstood the instructions when sent home and just sat in her chair for a couple of days till her first check up. She could hardly move at that point and ended up doing some absolutely brutal PT to catch back up.

I'm on the wait list to get my right one done now it's bone on bone and has been for quite a while the pain is non stop. From what I hear its a relative quick recovery.

Curious why you chose to do both at the same time?

I had my left done in 2007 @40yrs old, the right done in 2008. Was bone on bone and difficult to walk, post surgery has been awesome until they told me that the metal/metal implant would have to come out. Turns out the metal on metal causes high levels of cobalt in our blood and can cause all types of illness down the road.

So after 17 years I just had the left re-done last wednesday and hope to get the right done by end of this year. Had mine done at USC Keck, walking the same day and kicked me out the next. I'm walking good with the cane now but just feels like someone hit me in the side of my ass with a baseball bat.

Hope your recovery is fast, you will be very happy once through this.

Don't drink anymore, I'm fighting with Kaiser every month to get a 5/325 Norco prescription just to cope during the day and try to sleep at night. Springer never appealed to me too much of a shit show. I'm waiting on them now the list is 6/9 months my clock started April 1

Rather than injury or otherwise worn out, my hips have failed due to a lack of blood flow to the femurs resulting in collapse of the femural heads (avascular necrosis- side effect of cancer treatment a few years back).

Both had to be done and it was USCs suggestion to proceed with both immediately.

Doctor said he found they both had, as he described, collapsed and loose flaps like the sole of a shoe peeling off while he was in there.

Implants are Zimmer brand and use a metal socket cup, plastic liner, and ceramic hip ball attached to the metal implants. No metal on metal, and rebuildable in a modular design should i wear them out in the future.

Surgery was Monday morning, Still in significant pain today, mostly from the trauma of the surgery itself.

I’ve been up and walking, but not without assistance. Sounds like I’m going home today, so hopefully this is the hump and I’ll do better each day from today.

Thanks for the feedback and good luck to those also going through similar. I do feel like doing only one at a time would have allowed me a ‘crutch’ on the opposite side, but what are you gunna do now, right?!

Hope you continue to improve daily. My right one shot and the left is wearing out taking the extra load from the right. My right leg is considerably shorter than the left which causes all sorts of issues (pain) ortho Dr. won't do both at the same time because of other issues. Says to risky. So being a carpenter I'll default to the expert. Currently using a cane to get around and it sucks.

I'm in the club! At 48 Y.O. I had AVN and was in pretty severe pain. This was 7 years back at UCLA Santa Monica. The surgery was less painful than I expected. When I woke up in the recovery room, the constant hip pain I had prior was completely gone. The incision is where it was painful. walking right away and doing stairs the next day. Used crutches a few days after then a cane for a few days then a stiff limp for a week and pretty back to normal. I took 6 weeks off of work. I know a lot of people my age that have been through it and it's a lot better than what we were all dealing with before surgery. They pushed pain meds pretty hard and the recovery from those was worse than the surgery. Surgery was on Wed and by Saturday I weened off of the drugs and just took Tylenol. I have some pain from time to time (mostly in the first couple years after) in the surrounding muscles and stuff but it only lasts 1 day at the most if I have overdone it. While I was waiting the few months for the surgery, I rode a recumbent exercise bike every day and the DR said it made for an easier recovery.

Re your concerns about having to do it twice since your so young , I have had my left hip replaced twice but wait there is good news here. My first was when I was 42 and they used a cemented joint. The cement failed after 6 years and it was replaced with a non cemented "revision" appliance Jan 2001. I go in once a year for an xray and it's fine after 23 years. The stories you hear about the joint nylon wearing out refer to an old type of material that was no longer used after 1998. You should be good to go for another 25 to 30 years if the rest of your bod holds up

They removed my metal head and replaced with ceramic, good news is they didn't have to remove the stem which would have made it much more tramatic. The revisions are easier to recover from. I'm 7 days in and pretty much walking without the cane (limping I should say).

Got home and got the swelling down, off the pain meds, hit physical therapy hard and went from a walker, to a cane, to walking normal in a matter of days!

The first three days were the only ones concerning - my legs were swollen past what I could move on my own, leaving me essentially bed-ridden. Everyday after was exponentially better.

I wouldn’t hesitate to refer anyone to get this done if needed.
