...and what does a redneck get his daughter? Well, she's getting a truck that is a work in progress. 1986 Silverado, all the power, windows, locks, steering and brakes. It's an A/C truck. Fresh 350 (headers, intake and RV cam)

and 350 trans...but ugly as sin. She'll get to help with the asthetics, like sanding and cleaning, and she'll be learning how to setup a stereo. Mechanical duties are mine, and possibly squirting color as well.

Six months until permit, but an entire year to do it and shake it down. Sooner it's done, more time I get to mess with it;)

Best gift ever!! Same thing I plan on doing with both my daughter and son when the time comes.

Well, she has horses, so she can get bales and stuff. We are in a rural(ish) area, so girls and pickups are pretty common. It'll stay stock height for the foreseeable future. If she wants to keep it for college, cool. If not, we'll pick up something more "civilized", and this one will go to the next in line. When I was about 8, My Dad bought a '65 Mustang for my older sister. Same deal, old crusty project. That car was 20 years old at the time...funny, this is 33. Damn, getting oldo_O

Cool truck! My first vehicle when I turned 16 was my dad's 77 K 20 Silverado. It was a a complete rust bucket, but it got me everywhere I needed to go and my parents seldom had to worry about my safety if I got into an accident. A big part of me wishes that I would have kept it.

Exactly what I did for my daughter. She drove it like that all through high school.

Painted it for her just before she started college. She was in tears when she saw it all done.

Have fun!

This pickup won't get a high dollar paint job for a long time. Probably be out wet sanding off the black primer with her Monday. Front right is a little banged up, but picked up a spare. Major pretty up work has to wait for my garage to be finished. That's a whole different story. Good thing is, it's easy to work on, and built better than most things on the road today. I may sling a late model rear end under it, for four wheel discs, but may not need them. Need to clean up the engine bay, just basic stuff.

I got a car for my 16th birthday.
56 Ford Victoria.

It was $75.00:D
I'm thinking you're either a tad older than me, or grew up in a bitchin time warp neighborhood! Love the Vicky's, not so much the crowns.

Update is: Girl loves the old pickemup. Smiling so much her cheeks hurt:D! Mom took her on dirt road driving lesson a little bit ago. First time driving anything bigger than a SXS, and a little John Deere. Did good. She wants me to take her out tomorrow...a couple hours sanding the black primer off first. Earn the drive time...and I'll get some pics up when it's more blue again! Happy she's happy:)

Well, the comments from my wife's FaceSpace were a mixed bag...Everybody over 50 thought it was cool, a couple even jealous of the father-daughter project aspect. The youngins' were somewhat in shock. Most think it's cool, a couple (including BIL) said it's kind of redneck, needs a gun rack in the back window...So, there may be a couple "Non-California Compliant" pics eventually;)

The truck wasn't anything special. Built lots of cool crap, motor swaps and body mods, chopped and channeled...This is just an old gardener truck or farm kid's. Seeing how my little nerd girl reacted though...this is the same girl in Calculus2 at the college, reads a ton...her reaction made this old pickup special. Damn, getting soft in my old age...sorry for the rambling. Now I know how my dad felt when he gave my sister that Mustang.

Fuck the comments. The time spent with your daughter will be priceless. Teach her some basic life shit. Change a tire, swap a battery, change oil and filter, fuel filter, maybe pack a bearing..... That’s my plan with my daughter. She is only 8 yrs old, but she will know some basic repair stuff.

Pretty much! Daughter was down for a gun rack anyway, better shot than most:)
Long term mechanical goals with daughter include basic stuff, how to diag and identify a miss, charging system and cooling system. Checking oil and fluids is a given for anyone driving, I think. She needs to learn how to listen for changes in the truck as well...kind of hard on dirt roads, so that will be after permit on asphalt. Too many modern kids think cars run on good feelings and warm thoughts. I buy and fix their crap because they didn't notice a leak or a mild grind weeks before. Most mechanics kids I know don't know anything automotive. "Go to school, don't pay attention to how I make a living. Don't be like me" Those kids still have their dad fixing stuff. I want my daughter to know more than 99% of the average college guy...shouldn't be hard;)

Get her an eBay toaster battery tester.
Good place to start diagnosing, common problem, she'll rock at School.

Well, it's been a bit. Decided against decent paint, and just did some rough body work. Got the front suspension squared away. Still needs some new tires.

Still ugly, but daughter loves the farm truck/ grandpa look of it.

She has named him "Fred"...

Cool pickup, lucky daughter.

When our youngest was 16, she's 24 now, she was on swim team, a lifeguard, and was getting into surfing and wanted a little surf wagon. I found a pretty clean 1960 Rambler Cross Country Wagon and brought it home for her. Original 6, push button trans, it was pretty clean, not so much that it'd hurt if it got dinged in the school parking lot, but pretty clean. I went through it mechanically and brought it up to snuff and she collected surf stickers and put them in the rear side windows. I hate stickers on cars by the way but this was her car. Well, she finally got her license and my wife decided that she should have a newer safer car with air bags so I drove the Ramber for about a year and a half. I guess her concern for safety didn't spill over to me driving the car. It was a cool little ride. Ended up selling it to a guy in Oklahoma who was also looking for a little surf wagon.

There's no surf in OK.

Fred needs a little lift and some tire under him :D
Wife decided the girl doesn't need a lifted truck...I, being male, agreed. Not because of the wife, but because in high school a 4x4 meant "find mud", or a nice "quiet place to be alone"...I have the stuff to axle it, and maybe later. For now she just has to get comfortable driving...then launching boats (next summer will kick ass:cool:) This is for transportation and hauling hay bales.

We're in Central Az, 100ish miles north of Phoenix. Fred's wipers are on the workbench, just scraping overspray and tape off. Monsoon right now, came in quick, those pics were just before I posted!
A little overkill for daughter's first ride...although I do have an AWD transfercase...actually thought an AWD would kick ass for ice and snow, but I'd have to front clip it. Another build with more power, and a buyer:rolleyes:

As for safety, well, this has more mass than most things around the schools. Something modern with airbags and such would be good, I agree. Before she heads of to ASU, I'll probably try to find something more modern, and maybe pass this one to the next kid.

My daughters drove
Old Mercedes Benz 240 Diesels, 4 speed cars to school. They were the best slow slow car and not cool. No accidents or tickets through high school. We sold the cars 3 years later for the same price we bought them. They had 225K miles on them. Great kid car in high school.

One was beige and the other was blue.
