God bless the brave souls that stormed the beaches and jumped from airplanes to help defeat the nazis. Unfortunately, for the aging soldiers that are visiting France today it may be their last major anniversary of that fateful day.

My wife's grandma's brother was there and survived. A cowboy, lived his entire life in a little town in the center of Utah. Very modest people, had what they needed as far as possessions and little more. Fought his way through WWII, came home, started a family. Was building a barn, big family event, something went wrong and one of the walls got loose and fell and hit him in the back paralyzing him from the waist down. Took up leather working (he taught this to my father in law who was also a bull rider in Utah) and I was blown away by the detail of his work. Super nice guy.

Bill Dunsmore Sr who was one of my biggest influences and early machining teachers captained one of the landing boats 80 years ago today at Normandy, he was hit with shrapnel and spent several hours wading in the tide with blood and bodies.

He was 17 or 18 years old at the time iirc. Absolute studs.

May we never forget these brave men who sacrificed everything for us!!

79th Infantry Division came ashore on Utah D+8. He was killed one month later, July 7th in the counterattack on La Haye-du-Puits.

"Excerpt from 79th ID battle history"
SS Panzer-Division “Das Reich”, the Germans did not retreat under any pretext and prepared instead a counter-attack. They start it on the afternoon of July 7th and the offensive is so violent that the soldiers of the 79th Infantry Division are obliged to withdraw before gradually regaining the ascendancy at dusk. The counter-attack stops when it is completely dark. During this terrible day of fighting, the American losses are terribly high and the division loses 1,000 of its own.

DD was 14 years before my birth, I did have the honor to meet men in my life that fought. Some came home ok and some had scars from that day. Everyone of them seemed to be on a mission to live a life that was a good life, they lived and owed it to the guys who did not come home.
Why have we lost that national pride and sense of purpose with so many in our country?
Ronald Regan hit the nail on the head, we as a country cannot hide our heads and hope the rest of the world can fight it out.
