Well its happening, new motor is going in to replace the 496 HO. Looks like I will need to cut the engine cover. Harwood type scoop or maybe billet air cleaner sticking up out of the engine compartment? 22 Daytona. The motor on left is the 496 with 220 hours, right hand motor is the 540 that’s going in. Picture of the scoop is what I am debating, that or anodized air cleaner. Thoughts ?

I love those scoops, they look great on boats and work well. I might be a little biased 😁

If it's your avatar picture, then scoops.

Here is a pic of the boat.
Scoop is cleaner but the way you stow your bimini concerns me with the scoop, it might prevent you from storing the bimini like that. You might need slightly longer little arms to hold it off the cover a little higher.

With the bimini in the down position, a backfire out of uncovered flame arrestors will put crap on that white bimini boot.

I'm actually not a fan of the pro stock style scoops. Billet arrestor/air cleaner would be my choice, makes it look more old school hot rod and adds class just like wearing a nice watch over a casio

Did a scoop on our Mach 26 with a blower motor. I believe we were the first ones to do that because Dave had to source a scoop and said he had not done that before. It kept the motor much cleaner than just sticking the motor through the hatch. Water misting on aluminum is a PITA to clean up. I am a fan of scoops.

Interesting asking for an opinion on a site like this.
It’s all personal preference.
I have always been on the side of no glass scoops on a engine hatch like your boat which I would match in style and size to a 21 foot daycruiser.
I think they look good on a big dual engine blower boat like Tank’s.
I never got the scoops when they are mounted on a hatch that slopes to the transom and are at 40 plus degree angle on plane. Looks out of place.
On boats like yours I alway try to keep the hatch flat. Easier access from the water, the girls and kids like to lay across it while on floats…good stuff.
My only exception is if it’s a blower motor, then the scoop or injector looks good with the hatch cut out around it.
On your boat, try to eliminate that carburetor spacer and maybe it’ll fit(the power gain in your application is minimal)
I’ve also boxed the underside of the hatch out if needed. It’s only a few inches but usually that’s all it takes.
Stick the engine in there and see what it will take! You can always do the scoop after.
End of the day…your boat, your call.

Add a blower...wait, no...add another motor, then add two blowers...twice better, right?

I like the way a color matched scoop looks more than a billet piece poking through. I think it's because as a kid I liked the prostock cars of the 90's. Carbed and God-awful fast.

I love the look of the blowers sticking thru the hatch on the singles but I'll bet they're a mofo for waterspots, huh?
Used to be so many badass 25 Daytona's and Mach 26s with big GMC blower/ dual quad setups back in the early 2000's on Havasu
They were the shit before all the big cats came out 👍 😁

They do look cool. The guy I sold the boat to took the scoop off.

After I posted the scoop thread last week, I sent the two Cole pics with two different Harwood scoops to my 50 YO son. He prefers the Pfaff billet style air cleaner that's on it for the same reasons you mentioned.

Whatever you go with, just don't keep that current aircleaner you have on the 540 - it's is gonna choke the hell out of it. Not nearly tall enough, it places the flat surface of that lid in close proximety to the carb's venturis. AIrflow hates to make 90 degree turns, especially when "freeform" to get down into an opening at high speed.

Whatever scoop or taller hatch you put on, give youself a few more inches for a taller aircleaner, or just run a high flow flame arrestor and forgo the aircleaner assembly all together. An aircleaner isn't really needed on the water. That motor is gonna need to breath!

If it fits, I'd go without a scoop first, you can always add one later when you want another little dopamine hit to spice up the boat a few summers down the line
