Did Fatburger tonight, McDonalds, Subway and a pizza place take out. In Canada all our credit cards have chips and you put the card in a reader, confirm the amount and enter your pin. Its easy. On the reader one of the prompts is too add a tip. All the fast food places ask to add one. I don't tip on take out, even sushi because the staff doesn't do much. Hate this prompting for a tip. Especially since fast food workers here make $10 per hour min wage. Starbucks chick told me she makes $18 per hour on average from tips. Even so, starting to feel guilty skipping the tip prompt and leaving zero. Would you tip?

Do like having the card reader brought over and confirming the charge before it happens. Restaurants in the states have double charged me several times. This doesn't happen in Canada, and the card never leaves my hand. pictured is a credit card reader:

Not only no.....but HELL NO! And don't feel guilty about it. They are supposed to be entry level jobs. A stepping stone to other things. NEVER intended to be a career job capable of solely supporting a household in rent and food. Tipping up their wages artificially pumps up the job into a "career" job that will lock them into poverty the rest of their lives. No, don't tip fast food! And that's all I have to say about that!

Its almost feel guilty enough to tip. The only time I tip, is bartenders and waitresses at restaurants. I also usually over tip on good service. All these fast food places basically asking for a tip has me a little annoyed. McDonalds, Fatburger and Subway all hire foreign temp workers because Canadians don't want those jobs even at $10 per hour.

If they brought you your food to the table, maybe.
How about at Buffets? Do you tip the person refilling your water glass and taking plates away?

I've been noticing this here and there also. Jersey mike's subs does this. The first prompt before you even swipe your card is would you like to leave a tip and breaks it down in a few diff percentages. First is yes or no then on to the amount then swipey swipey. Kinda an uncomfortable obligatory feeling almost. I can kinda see it. They slice the meats in front of you old deli style then they build your sammich. It doesn't deserve a tip. Well, maybe it does if she doubles the meat for free. Kinda like a heavy pour at the bar. The day I see Mcdonalds ask me that on the CC reader is the day I'll laugh hysterically and walk out and never return. In california they can't add a mandatory gratuity on large parties anymore either. The bottom of the receipt as I said above now gives suggested percentages.

I tip for personalized service.
I way over-tip if it's Single mother working a tipping position and through conversation I realize she can use every dime for what ever reason from Christmas is approaching to taking her kids to Disneyland that weekend etc.
Friends tell me I'm an insane tipper but on the strength of that reputation I'll add I hate tipping in fast food take out counter kinda dealios.

The exception is the 31 flavors near us.
This hard-working girl has been there from High school and now she's mid-college. She hustles, always sweet as sugar, just kicks ass. So we hit her pretty hard with a tip.

Several bartenders in town reliant on me for tips so I can kick a few more in for the Ice Cream girl.

Buffet I'll toss them a few bucks. They are usually good at refills and clearing the table at the one I go to. Can't stop eating fast food, I'll die from starvation. Might start at Fatburger when I eat in. They bring it over when its ready. So a little more work over just handing food. Espresso place I give some because the girl taking the order also makes the drink.

In those situations I always tip $1.00 - I tip more at restaurants that I eat in often when I order carry out - around 10%.

The way I look at it it's karma - how much does it hurt me to give $1-5 to somebody working to serve me (package, bag, fill my fry's, pour my drink etc) sharing $1-5 with them makes then feel a lot better about what they are doing and relative to my income it does not hurt me a bit.

Share a buck or two with hard working people - Don't get righteous about your right not to have to give it to them.

At least that's the way I look at it ...

I also tip Valet parkers, both when I give the keys and get the car back. I used to tip more on take out at regular restaurants. Restaurants when tips involved could pay less then min wage if with tips the low wage equalled min wage. Knew a few waitresses in my early 20's, who barely made min wage under the old system. They changed it a few years ago. Most of the restaurants I get take out at, sushi and an Italian restaurant, its the owner handling the get your order ready. Don't think they need the tip.
