I have an 04 Ultra Stealth 21 and I basically need to remove anything powder coated like swim steps, grab handles etc. and have it re-coated. For the handles and steps bolted through the transom is there any special kind of silicone I should use when I re-install these items? Thanks in advance.

3M 4200 is a decent choice also.

Agreed 5200 is a pain in the ass and if you want that through hull back out and can't heat it.

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!! way more adhesive quality than needed. Boatlife makes life caulk or life seal. on top of that 5200 takes 7 days to cure, is runny upon application.
This right here.

Save your self some grief and use 4200 instead of 5200. Another tip is to install the piece dry and tape out the shape of it with blue tape. Then apply sealant and put it back on. A lot less cleanup.

Last weekend needed to remove a set back bracket, it was installed and sealed with 3M5200. Left engine hanging loosely from hoist, removed all bolts attaching bracket to transom. Engine is still attached to bracket and weights 515 lbs. finally used de-bond to allow removal of bracket. I've seen the stuff pull first layer of fiberglass along with gel coat.

don't walk........run from 5200 can't think of a single application it would be useful for.

I may have fat fingered that one and meant 4200.

Does anyone think that a recent submarine tragedy could have been avoided with 5200?

Asking for a friend.

4200 should suffice.

3m 5200 is for extremely high strength or permanent bonds only. Its common marine uses are more towards sail boats etc.
3m4200 is for strong yet removable thru hull fixtures and below the water line installations. Below water line...important destinction. Transom sealing plates adaptors etc. Jet pump suction to intake adapter etc..
Very good sealant. Difficult to remove when required if used correctly.

I did this same job this winter, I’ll get you the exact but it was a kitchen type silicone as per the boss guys at DCB
This is what DCB was using:

I have used the GE 100% silicone listed above and the boat life silicone. They both work good for me. I usually use the boat life silicone on aluminum parts since it produces alcohol instead of acetic acid during the cure which is less likely to corrode aluminum.

Here is the boat life silicone:

4200, 4201....whatever it takes!

🤣

Not for any of my projects though.... I'll be using butyl tape instead. But If you've followed along on my NEVERENDING slow-ass project, it won't matter what I use. I don't really plan on any water reaching anything EXCEPT fiberglass. 😎

Flex seal, you can build a whole boat with that shit. J/k

Marine silicon will be fine for bolt on parts.

3m 4200 or equivalent silly-cone for everything below water and you want to be able to remove it someday.
5200 or equivalent for anything permanently fixed to the hull.
