Wife and baby are in the hospital. They’re doing scans. He never hit the brakes just plowed into her at 50-60MPH. Said he saw a greenlight but none of the 20 cars stopped in front of him after having waited at the previous red light. He’s close to 90 years old.

Man that’s scary, hopefully your family checks out ok. That suburban looks to have taken the hit really well.

I experienced my first wrong way driver on the 24 this morning… I saw multiple accidents and all kinds of crazy shit on the road today, must have been the full moon.

Got the biggest SUV and most expensive NUNA car seats for a reason. Money comes and goes but my wife and kids are priceless.

Hoping they’ll be discharged tonight but she’s pretty racked up and rattled. She saw him in the mirror before he hit and couldn’t do a thing about it; I’m sure it’s a helpless feeling.

As for the guy, he was transported and I pray he’s OK as well, but probably time to stop driving.

Who here has taken your parents’ keys away?

Pulled my dad's and later my mom's.
Dad's were tougher, fortunately we had medical help. Mom's keys took a heart to heart talk.
Hope your family heals quickly, physically and emotionally.

I have and it was no picnic. I had his doctor file notice to DMV after battling with him.

My mom voluntarily gave up the keys at 79 years old. My Dad is still driving at 82, but he had to take away his fathers keys and knows that one day I will be knocking on the door and respects that I will be making the call when it’s time.

My grandfather gave up his keys voluntarily, my dad is still doing ok, night driving is different to him now so he limits his driving at night to local only if he has to go out

Any updates on your family?

Funny you mention the big SUV for kid hauling/family detail. The 2004 Excursion I still own was bought for the same purpose. Wife downsized from that to the last of the full size Explorers. 6ish years ago, 3 kids in the back seat, she saw a new GMC coming up behind her at the light, full speed. They weren't full snow birds, only from Utah. Totaled her car, but everyone ended up being okay.

Set new land speed records getting to the accident. It's scary shit when it's your family :(

Hmmmm, insurance companies' total fender benders anymore. the way that hitch is bent, there is likely frame damage.

Frame swaps are pretty easy on newer trucks and suv's. I had a smaller collision shop and did about ten per year. All the larger dealerships have frames in stock, usually had one delivered in a day or two.

it will depend 100% on whether it is cheaper to repair or cheaper to total. Years ago, I had a brand-new Toyota 4x4 pick up that I wrecked. very little cosmetic damage but the frame was twisted. It was cheaper to ship a new frame from Jaan and swap everything over than to total it. Same truck some years later was stolen and stripped. Here's your check.

Hope your family is doing well. My Dad had a similar experience in Utah. Traffic on the freeway stopped, and someone ran into him about 60. He was sore for a couple weeks.

Wife and baby were sent home from ER last night at almost 11. She has a concussion and neck and back pain but otherwise she seems to be ok. They administered multiple x rays and a cat scan and the baby they say is probably fine but no scans due to the radiation.

Haven’t talked to insurance but already looking for a new 2025 Duraburb or Yukon XL with a Duramax. Escalades don’t offer the diesel anymore for some reason.

Glad the fam is ok. I saw a post where Ford may be bringing back the Excursion, with the 7.3 Godzilla as an option. I would love one of those.

Glad to hear mom and baby got discharged with not too severe of injuries.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions on the insurance claim side of things.

Not a sales pitch, just always down to give some time to help out inmates if they're having a tough time with insurance after accidents 👍

We’re now on our 5th Burb. Wife was once driving down the Conejo grade into Camarillo in our 85’ Burb, when a Mercedes from the center median, suddenly pulled out directly in front of her. She braked, but still clobbered it. Our daughters were asleep in the backseat. It didn’t even wake them up.

Scary stuff, Frogman...people who haven't been a close witness or seen a wreck like that happen struggle to understand how vilolent that kind of an impact can be.
I got rear ended in a Crown Vic at work one day, was stopped at the end of an off ramp and got tagged by a woman whe was about 90 driving a big boat...she was doing around 35 according to the CHP guy that did the paper. That was enough for me...rang my bell big time.
I am glad your family was as prepared as possible, and hope they all are OK.

Glad to hear the fam is ok, shit can happen at any time!

, I had a guy hit and run my truck at a stoplight. No damage to my truck, but I’d love to see the front of his car because I had my hitch in lol.

Same thing happened to me right in front of my office. Pulled onto the street and stopped at the stop sign. Bam, car behind me hit me. I was already in a bad mood and this was about to set me off. I got out and walked back there, my hitch went straight through his radiator. No damage to my truck or hitch but he was pouring coolant everywhere. the guy gets out and says should we exchange info and what not. I said nope you hit me and I'm good but if i was you I would call a tow because you aren't making it far. Got in my truck and left

Same thing happened to my dad in a drive thru in about 2005. We left with our tacos and he stayed with no coolant.

Crown vics didn't have a great reputation for not catching fire when rear ended either. Family friend was AZ DPS and had a similar situation, estimate was the car hit him at about 65. He woke up to the sound of fire suppression going off, thankfully it didn't go up but unfortunately did medically retire him with back issues.

1996 technology.
The Suburban blocks any view of traffic slowing.

Adaptive cruise control would probably have caught that, but the technology that interfaces with an 85 year old driver sucks. 😟

Sucks this happened to you and your family. That big suburban saved your family from really serous injuries. Make sure you follow up on your wife’s Concussions, along with back and neck injuries. My wife was in a serious car accident. Had same type of injuries with concussion and neck and back injuries. It’s been 4 years since accident and back and neck still has issues. Won’t do surgery because of the risk factors. Concussion took about two years to heal. Hope your wife recovers quickly and won’t have long term effects.
