My buddy just bought a boat, i believe its a 1980 sleek craft tunnel hull, and i has a merc 175 black max on it. he got it off his uncle for 2gs. boats been sitting for two years in the shed. my question is what kind of spark plugs does he need to buy? (looking for the number, we would look but the boats at the river). any ideas?

i would worry about cleaning the carbs and making sure the floats are good once you get that done, then change the spark plugs!

Change the oil and make sure the seals are good too its cheap now expensive later. Want to check the coils as well they are another maintenance item that causes problems the longer a wacker sits the worse it gets and when they run bad they only get worse.

Had a boat real similar and got it cheap as well but it took about $1000.00 to get the motor in line but after that it ran great and was a turn key boat and we ran the hell out of it. Mine had a 10 gallon fuel cell and you could run all day on 10 gallons.

His uncle told us, it was "turn key" when he put it away, then again its probably not true lol , but they lost their home and hadent had time to use it. from what i understand he drained the carbs before he stored it, stab in the fuel tanks etc. i think the boat only has about 150 original hours on it, and his uncle is the original owner lol. im thinkin a water pump & housing, spark plugs and some starting fluid just to see if it Idles ok on the ramp, i guess thats a good place to start. from what i hear its a nice lookin boat!

No one suggested a new impeller if it's been sitting in the Az heat so I will, it's cheap piece of mind :thumbsup

Plugs are the least of your worries. By all means get the carbs cleaned. Fuel filters also. Maybe even get the tank douched out. It only take a cylinder about half a minute to go lean and you have a bad day. Get some fogging oil, pull the plugs and spray the cylinders with a good shot of oil. Remember it hasn't been started in a while. It'll smoke a little.:D Drain the gear case, put in fresh grease. Pull the gear case put in a fresh water pump. Get some muffs and start it on the hose at home. You don't want to be let down at the river.

Do you know if it's oil injected? If it is, change the impellor & see how it runs.

If it's oil / gas mix, clean the carbs change the impellor & see how it goes.

Wouldn't mess with the plugs, they're pricey. I believe those arc to the side of the plug (no bar coming up to the electrode), so they take a long time to wear out. We had 15 yrs on one set with no problems.

Either way, sounds like he's getting a deal if there's only 150 original hrs.

I don't think they started putting oil injection on them until a few years down the road (mid 80's?)

Of course Tom Brown will be along shortly to discredit everything I've said.

That guy really gets on my nerves :grumble:

But then again he is "The Undisputed King Of Performance"

.....hey....shouldn't it actually be "The Undisputed Prime Minister Of Performance"? :hmm

I know you are in Water Wheel, so if the boat is their and you don't want to take it home, I've used Blythe Marine, Roger, on the pontoon's wacker.
Knows his way around outboards and seems reasonable.

If you need starting fluid, I'd fix the engine. ... but if you insist, se WD40 to start it. At least it has some lubrication in it.

Spark plugs don't wear out when they're just sitting there. I wouldn't be too concerned about them.

In fact, I wouldn't do any more work than necessary. Gear case oil is a good idea so you can start with fresh oil. Look at a sample after you come off the water the first time and make sure it's not milky. A water pump is also a good idea but not entirely necessary as the 175 has a telltale. As long as it's pissing, you should be fine.

Most importantly, get some fresh gas in it before you work it hard.

Nice find. If you can get a serial number from the motor I can give you the water pump kit, Part number, plug numbers ect. I know my personal motor is a 86? Merc 150 and it takes NGK BR8h. My suggestion would be lower unit lube change and vacuum test it, to check the lower unit seals. Drain the fuel and change the lines, filters, fuel pump diaphragms, and primer bulb. Make sure to use hose clamps not zip ties those motors have a tendency of fuel line vacuum leaks from poor connections. Replace the water pump, drain the carbs. Replace the plugs. Put some 2 stroke in the cylinders and turn the engine over by hand to help lube the cylinder walls and rings. After you run it check the plugs make sure you don?t have a lean cylinder. If you have any question please give us a call. If you do this work yourself all these parts should cost no more than a few hundred dollars. Befor any of the prior work suggested is done, do a compression check to make sure you have a good power head. since it is cold it wont be really accurate but itsa bench mark. Then once the engine is running, do an other test to keep for your records.
