48 years ago today, February 2nd, 1975, I got on a plane at Los Angeles International Airport for a 90 minute flight to Oakland, stepped onto a bus to a little island in the middle of an Estuary, off the San Francisco Bay. At the time I was prepared to put in 4 years to learn a trade and maybe save a little money. 10 weeks later I stood in front of 200 or so like-minded recruits, in the middle of a Parade Ground, looking forward to putting that experience behind me. Little did I know, when I first walked across the bridge, that it would turn into a 28 year career, and change my life forever.
I'm far left in this picture. Battalion Commander of the Recruit Companies.
Somewhere along the way I picked up a family.
Big difference from the first pic.
