Some things should not be said. For example, everything in this thread.
My wife works with diabetics. She tells me black, Hispanic, and First Nations people do not fare as well white people in the course of this condition. That's not to say caucasians do all that well. Diabetes is killing us, but we tend to do better than people of color.
Not long ago, she was providing care to a Native man. He was a drinker with diabetes. In treating his disease over the course of two and a half years, he lost both legs, an arm, and his vision. He was a really nice guy without a care in the world and was a friend to everyone on the ward. It tore her down a brick at a time to watch this man die. She begged him to stop drinking and start eating properly. He didn't, of course.
Between that man and two others we lost recently, I've been doing quite a bit of thinking about health and people I've lost who I believe could still be around.

You are a black man with a weight problem and by all accounts, you like to drink. You are high risk for diabetes. Please take better care of yourself.
I am counting the months until I can leave this God forsaken ice castle. While it will be a few years until I can fully retire, I expect to start wintering someplace warmer in either 2012/2013 or 2013/2014. Those thoughts were once a dream but they are starting to become real for me. When I think about the possibility of spending a few months per year in the south western United States, I have warm thoughts of spending time with some friends. You are one of those friends. I'm begging you as a friend, please try to do it better. Any small improvement would be welcome: the odd walk after supper, a few less drinking binges per year, and maybe jam a stick of celery and a couple of leafs of romaine into that pie hole once in a while.

The difference between you and some of the high profile people who have achieved true greatness is that you aren't high profile. I have as much respect for you as I have for anyone on this site. You've worked life over pretty hard and good for you on that.
As you age, your body can take less abuse so maybe it's time to think about your health a touch more. You're a young man so it wouldn't be that hard for you. Please take care of yourself.

I recall reading one of your posts in which you felt you were younger than your years and full of life. I admire your self image but my friend, you are beating the life out of yourself with a lead pipe. You're sick all the time and it would seem you are immunocompromised because it takes a long time for you to recover.
Dave, please, slow down before we have to hear that you've had a stroke or a heart attack. Don't bother thinking people under 40 aren't at risk for these things.
I don't know you that well but from where I'm standing, your lifestyle does not look physically sustainable. I hope Stacey and Sierra change your life in a profoundly positive way and help you understand your worth and why you need to respect yourself. I'm asking you as a friend to consider this.

Please, people of RDP, take care of yourselves. The most loving thing you can do for your friends and family is to respect yourself and try to enjoy life from a more healthy point of view.
This is not a plea for everyone to live on a diet of vegetable juice and bottle oxygen. I'm not asking anyone to stop drinking or quit smoking. I just want to remind everyone that your body might thank you if you tone it down just a bit.
Please give it some thought.
