The Small Boats at the Catalina Ski Race..

Now these are quite interesting.
Of interest is that I saw no Schiada 21 River Cruisers on the list!
I remember marveling at how well they were set up for THAT race in the old days!

What do you guys know of some of these boats..my comments are italicized.

Rob Thorsen (22' Hocking) (Schiada 24 bottom)
Mark Durham (21' Hallett) (F2, Vector, 210S?)
Wayne Murray (21' Hallett) (F2, Vector, 210S?)
Skip Vaughan (24' Howard) (Is this the same Vaughn as in Vaughan Boats?)
Pat Murphy (21' Rayson Craft) (Well OK now!)
Tom Melton (21' Liberty)
Randy Wilson (21' Cyclone) (Ausi-design now built in England)
Gus (Vern Gust) (20.8' Challenger) The George Linder design lives on!
Doug Eckhoff (21' Nordic) (The new Nordics are something!)
Scott Went (21' Nordic)
Charles Ward (21')
Carl Brunst (21' Bernico)
Glen Anderson (21' Bernico) (Built in Belgium ..look pretty incredible!)
Brent Wisemantel (21' Force)
Ryan Sharman (24' Pantera)

Almost positive the #78 boat pulling Jack Lynch (finished 30th overall) was a 21' Schiada;)

wait till someone tells them how bad that boat rides and performs..

You are one negitive MF'R. The 210 is a great all-around boat, sorry you bought the wrong one, I'm sure you'll buy something else next week, can't wait for the post.

That 210 is a deeper V than a Vector or Schiada RC.

Ive seen huge power in those boats.

No they are not a narrow-beam boy-racer but they do perform.

2FORCEFULL...you had to throw a bomb in here! sheesh...

210 is an excellent ski race hull, very smooth riding, fast, likes lots or power. Poor results many times are linked to less than optimum setup. I have owned and/or raced in 210's, Vectors, and Schiadas for a long time.

This coming from a guy who post 24-7 how he wasnts a 210? the 210 is one of the best 21 foot boat made my opinion. The nordic cyclone is a better race boat or boat for the ocean and rough. but they are narrow, and built for specific purposes. and the 21rc is a great boat for a vdrive and hot rod. but the 210 can serve any purpose you can throw at it. they dominated ski racing with big power until the cylones and forces took off. they run great with anything. turbos and 6 drives, stock 500s and bravos, ive even seen a 300x on the back of one and it still moved. they can hold massive ballast tanks and the wide beam make a stable ride. our last one was an open bow with a 496 ho it ran in the high 70s and crushed anything it went through. great wakes, great safe ride in the boat. they are tanks. and its a hallett, gold chains or not, their quality speaks for them selves...

going back to this thread if you were gunna ski catalina behind a 21 look for a nordic or a 210, you wont be disappointed. they ride softed and better then alot of 24 - 27 boat out there.

I see Vern Gust is still racing the Challenger 21. That hull has been around a long time!

That is the George Linder designed Challenger.
It's the most copied/splashed boat on the east coast and particularly good in the rough stuff.
Kind of like the Spectra 20 on the west coast, at least 20 companies splashed that great riding hull!

In Superboat trim:

There is even a relatively new company (Tuff Marine) out of Canada building a new high tech version.

Have there been any significant changes to the 210's through the years? Am I wasting my time looking at 210's with small block power(haven't actually starting looking yet)?

They run decent w/ small blocks (60ish) but can handle HUGE hp easily.

I'm a fan of having way more power than needed, i can always control how little my foot pushes down;)

don't start looking yet

Actually, I planned to wait till you pick one up then buy it from you:D.

If I could just sell my old Hallett, less motor, I could slip this between the stringers.

Just thought it was kind of funny that you were talking about Superboats on this thread. Tom's #52 Liberty was actually built off of a superboat design. M. Grigsbe built the plug for the Liberty based off a 23 Superboat. He shortened it to 21 and made it a little taller. He built a total of 3 of these boats. It is a GREAT boat to ski behind. Just to make everyone feel better, the title actually calls it a Schiada!! I will try to post some of our camera footage from the catalina race on here as soon as I learn how to edit the footage. Honestly this boat is built like a tank. It will handle more that a driver will out in the ocean.

That could be. Honestly I had never even heard the name Superboat until recently when Tom was telling me that is the basis of his boat. I will post some pics as soon as I figure out how to load them to a post!!
