Meeting Wild Bill to test the DBR ....

Testing 29 Hydromotive 4 blade,
26 Trophy,
30 B Blades
32 B Blades

Bully's new 22' Talon with the big 400R and this Cougar should be an interesting comparison. The 400 R has more horsepower, but the DBR has more RPM. I think the Cougar is lighter by a few hundred pounds as well... I think we need jackets AND helmets for this brawl !!

Predictions?

You’ll be quicker off the line. I’ll catch you when you back off so you don’t grenade. And I will keep it wide open and you’ll have to back off because you don’t want to scatter parts.

Outcome?

Ran both the Cougar and the Daytona today.

Cougar's power steering worked bitchen...

Accelerates like a missile...

Ran the 28/29 Hydromotive 4 blade thru hub...106 MPH @ 6500 RPM. Super stable, but by no means a top end wheel. Great mid range prop. Effortless 100 mph cruise speed. Wind was picking up so we didn't pull out the speed blades. Inputting the info on the prop slip calculator gave the following:

29 pitch
1.62 gear
6500 rpm
106 mph
4% slip factor
Had 2 GPS on board. 105.9 and 106 mph indicated.

Big thanks to Wild Bill for coming out and keeping me in sight.

Ran a small hulled hot rod Outboard while I was out there...he had nothing for the Cougar. 20 boat lengths in seconds. To his credit, he got to 90 mph.

Planning on using the bigger wheels next Tuesday...Wild Bill and I will be checking engine height and making some adjustments prior to the next testing session.

Missed you guys on the delta today. K Kraft made it down. My 250s pushed my 28 foot pig to a respectable number.

We ran Sherman's 28 and our 308 to Sam's for brunch. Then out under the Gate to Point Bonita lighthouse. Hit up Oakland Estuary then back to Benicia where the Shermans continued back to Antioch where they launched. Fantastic day

Would love to see more pics from this ride. I've never boated up there. Sounds like a blast.

I wanted to check my engine height, so I spent some time to get an accurate reading.

Placed a level near the front of the trailer...got it level.
Then went under the boat with the level placed on the riding surface of the center sponson. This is the reading that counts. I had to drop the nose of the trailer slightly to get a level reading on the rear running surface. Once this was done I put the level on the prop shaft and adjusted the trim to read level. Take note where your trim indicator is after you find level of prop shaft. My engine is " level" at "2" on my trim indicator. I don't want positive trim, so knowing this is critical.

Now, I measured from the floor to the center of the prop shaft and it read 18 1/4 "
Then I measured from the floor to the bottom of the running surface. It read 17" exactly, so my engine is running at 1 1/4" above the bottom.

To low, you are scrubbing speed...too high, and you can endanger your safety due to propeller "blow out". The ass end " walks out" and you can spin out or worse...

I'm sure I could go higher on my engine height, but I want cornering as well as speed, so 1 1/4 " will be a good start to work with.

When I see an Outboard with the nose excessively high, I know the pilot hasn't done his boat homework. Set up is everything. The War Canoe was an old boat (1984 Cougar 19') with a stock engine. (300xs) we took it to victory lane at the Parker Enduro with a near perfect set up.

Wild Bill, the master of set up, will be with me tomorrow to run the DBR Cougar with the speed wheels ...we will keep you posted.

Went from 106 mph to 112.4 mph...engine is still low at 1 1/4" above the bottom.

Temperature was 85 degrees, so air was lousy.

May try the 32 BBlade tomorrow ... This should be interesting!

The boat exceeded the 110.999 mph Parker Enduro speed limit with the small prop...LMFAO!!

I would like to see you run a good cleaver. After seeing the boat run a couple of times I think it might benefit from a little more tail lift. I have a great 30 merc. cleaver that I think would be interesting for you to run. A 30 at 7400 with 9% slip would put you at 118. You may get the extra rpm if the cleaver is able to pop the tail loose.

Looking forward to using the cleaver !!

I have a feeling the boat will be like a "Koufax" fastball !! Go Dodgers!!

This is a class 4 boat ....I thought John Haddon won in his white Sleekcraft.

Can anyone definitively say who won?

I don't know who won. I'm just adding random pix to your thread. IMG_5178.jpg

Fuel was tested after the race and he was disqualified. Alcohol in the fuel.

I hear that they said his engine was 1/2 inch too high as well, so the DQ could have been for either violation. I'd like to hear from John Haddon about the decision...get both sides.

I don?t understand why they would mess with fuel, every racer knows the first thing they do when you hit the trailer is toss the probe in the tank.

Because it?s not a stock motor. Fuel doesn?t make horsepower, it supports it. I?m guessing that motor wasn?t stock if they had alcohol in the tank.

John gassed up at the Terribles gas station in Parker, he did not know that the 87 octane fuel contained alcohol/ethanol. He assumed the gas would pass a digitron test as he was using "pump gas" as the rules specified. We racers had the option of having our fuel and engine height certified before the race. Some of us did, some didnt.

Aren't normal gas stations 10% or less? Or does any amount of ethanol DQ you?

WHEN THEY MEASURED,, THEY GOT 7/8 BELOW, THATS WHAT I TOLD THEM THEY WOULD FIND, (RULES STATE 1/2 BELOW FOR GREEN OUTBOARD) TROY CAME TO ME AFTER THE MEASURE TO ADMIT HIS MISTAKE. WE WERE LEAGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
