It may be the phone but that motor sounds like piston slap.
Actually, the Clown Car sound is the air compressor for the fuel system… no sound when you are on it, but sounds goofy at idle.

Was that a Schlatt in the face??l View attachment 1404489
The 28 Speed Racer was a FANTASTIC boat with 250xs heads it still ran close to 110. We put 1000s of miles on it around the Delta.
Today finally begins the latest run with F14's 24' Skater. Has a 15" mid, hydraulic jack plate, & a handful of stainless to try. He doesn't care about top end, just wants a good all around boat. Gonna be a blast prop testing today, high of 79° and low humidity. Old pic, I will get some new pics

Owned that boat for 7 years, great fun, really good in rough water, you could drive through anything. Where it falls short is directional stability. Above 80 it gets squirrely. Granted I never put solid mount in it like the race boat. That would have made a big difference. It needs more skeg in the water. I had been working on an idea with 2 transom mounted turning fins to mimic twin engine skegs. Operated either mechanically with levers and rods either inside boat of exposed tied to existing steering. Or operated hydraulically using the boats hyd. steering. I spun it out twice, once alone and once with a buddy that will no longer ride with me...........LOL It just needs more testing and time put into it.

That guy is not your buddy. A buddy would’ve said, let’s don our Lifelines, reload the cooler, and do it again!

Only ran to upper 70s, more props to try
Assume you're referring to the Skater. That boat is incredibly weight sensitive. With a light load, I would consistently see 87 with the 4.2 Yamaha running 29 Bravo. Don't recall RPM, but 6100ish. No hyd. lift, bolted directly to the 9" setback, no set up, no solid mounts and did not change mount height from where it was placed originally. Boats capable of more for sure, big hop at 60-65, manageable but can be driven past if trimmed under till you pass those speeds and then let it go. My understanding is the boat is 2-300 lbs light now which will help. Just don't stick it into a corner, in its current configuration, it will roll to the outside sponsor and spin. I do however miss the "skating" feeling about 80 as I'm in a V bottom now. Anxious to see how it goes.

Why'd you make the switch?
Found a project really and was tired of the tunnel. Skater was a beautiful boat buy didn't have the handling characteristics that suited me now. Got excited about a 24 Cole that spent its entire life at Lake Arrowhead, it did however have 502 bravo in it..................Hmmmmm. Ran it late last summer, was a ton of fun, boat ran in the low 80's but I'm an outboard guy. So it was conversion time, spent most of last winter working the change, it was a perfect candidate, workmanship for the Cole is right along with the best out there for the time. No pad so its tricky about 75, but it goes straight where you point it, LOL headed for Parker tonite as a matter of fact.

Anyone here have a good used air compressor for a 300xs laying on a shelf they may want to part with for reasonable cost?

We were not trying to leg out top mph, just cruising. It will run mid 90s at a minimum in current configuration. If F14 turns the keys over to me & we slap a new over hub DeWald she would run 100+

@Boatmaster is your guy to answer this. We would always run them on the hose immediately for several minutes, pull cowls & spray everything down with wd40. Scrub all external hardware including gauges, cleats & entire boat. It was a process but worth it to me. Remember to scrub down the trailer & truck too.

I live in the Keys and always flush my 300xs with SaltAway or similar flush products and hose down boat with same no matter if a 1/2 hr run or all day trip. This stuff is good too. I like their musket gun.

I just got home from majestic Montana. What an amazing trip . The Bully took me to places I’ve never seen. We cruised the historic Flathead lake and its Stellar islands. We flew the lake with the sea plane (Petrel) and spectacular Glacier Park in the Husky. I saw the Glacier in a way that few will ever see it. Paul and I caught a perfect , almost no wind day, which allowed us a special opportunity to fly a more intimate view of the Glacier and surrounding areas. Mount St. Nicholas , the Chinese wall, road to the sun, countless waterfalls and glacial blue lakes.
I can’t wait to go back and try to duplicate that week of my life I’ll never forget.
Thank you Paul, I appreciate the adventure you took me on.
Here is an airfield in the middle of the wilderness…we jumped out and shot a hundred rounds at a few targets , then climbed back into the clouds again. Epic!

Paul’s friend, Scott, has a huge Bison ranch and invited us to his pad that hovers over the rapids…
Great wine, steak and lobster was the fare. Super nice guy, great evening. His home is really nice.
