My '66 F-100 has a 352 FE turning a Warner T-85 three speed with an R-11 overdrive. I rebuilt the trans last year. Found a good used gear set and a rebuild kit on eBay, located a new tailshaft bushing in Washington State, and had a company in Fort Worth called Standard Transmissions ( :D ) do the work.

The R-11 has a big solenoid operating pawls and a planetary gear set for the OD. There's an electric switch on the throttle that kicks it out of OD when it's floored for passing.

Really a cool setup, I was lucky to find the parts and a shop that knew what a T-85 is.

Have you got their sticker on the window of your Porsche?;) I'm not a member but have a pair of Piloti shoes.:)

I don't - I'm pretty stingy when it comes to stickers on my cars.

Piloti's are great!

First car I drove, was a clutch, on the tree, towing a trailer, I think I was 9.
The wife can row better than most of the guys I know.
Taught the daughter to drive in our Baja Dove Springs. She was 12.
DD is a 5-speed Ram. Knee hates it in traffic though.

It’s interesting timing that this thread has just come up because I’m in the market for a new car or slightly pre-owned. I really like the Ford Focus ST & RS models, however they’re both 6-spd. manuals & I’m just not sure I can handle daily driving manual with so much traffic out here. They’re both very cool cars, but maybe that’s a big reason why there are so many of them for sale? I don’t know, but I thought I read somewhere that only like 3% of US car sales in 2017 were manuals? Maybe daily commuting is a big reason why, because there’s a lot more to do inside of a car w/ a manual. I’m also very hesitant to go test drive a 2017/2018 Focus ST for the risk of looking like an idiot, since I haven’t driven a manual in over a decade. [emoji23]

I'm shopping new shitboxes for a commuter. A 6 speed manual is $1100 less than auto. Hard to even find one ans dealers tell me I wont able to sell it in a few years.

My oldest girl is going to be driving soon, and the wife and I want her to have a manual. The thinking is she will be more engaged in driving and hopefully safer.

What’s out there that’s still manual rwd and not a vette viper or Porsche?

The Miata and BRZ/GT86 are the first two that pop into my head.

Id go for the Miata. Its a reliable car. Being a two seater, less passengers, less distractions for the driver. You can get a decent used one cheap.

Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers

Not alot of options matching that criteria. Honestly unless my kid grew up around cars and understands the responsibility of a rwd/decent hp car (mostly in the rain) I would probably push her into a fiesta st....Super fun manual car and actually faster around a track than a BRZ/FRS with the FWD safety thrown in.

What s wrong with a vette viper or Porsche dad? :)

BRZ/FRS/GT86/impreza/STI can all be had in manual rear drive.

For all intents and purposes, the Toyota/Subbie is a two seater as well.

You ever looked at the underpinnings of a miata...lol

Not sure I would feel comfortable with my kid driving one daily with all the soccer moms and dumbshits bombing around in 6K pound SUV's.

I’ve done enough research on both the RS & ST to know that if you buy one the resale value will drop like a rock, especially the ST. I’ve also seen enough reviews on the RS to realize that’s its not really a daily driver in the city, however of course you can do it. But a bumpy ride, stiff clutch, poor tire wear & 16-18 MPG all also other factors to consider. I’ve sat in the RS & let me tell you I’m a thin guy & those seats are extremely tight. You cannot move your legs at all & that would bug anyone with a long commute. The ST is definitely a much better commuter, with better MPG & a softer ride, however driving to work on backroads & driving in SoCal traffic are two different animals.

The RS right ‘new’ is going to run someone 37-42k new & around 33-35k with 15k miles or less. I’ve seen a few around 30k with about 20k miles on them, although I didn’t check the carfax to see if the head gasket update was already performed. One last thing about the RS, when my Focus TCM failed last week & I was towed to the dealer, I asked to ‘test drive’ a 2018 Red RS on their lot & they said no. They told me ‘test drives’ are not offered with an RS. Damn really? I’m not sure if all Ford dealers are that way, however that might explain why so many of the RS are already for sale. You have to buy it w/o a test drive? I realize it’s a 350HP AWD car, however it’s still a Focus, not a Lamborghini, but I just laughed & walked away.

Go look at a 2018 VW GTI SE with the DSG.

I think it will fulfill all of your needs and also look at there warranty when compared to the Ford offerings;)

Thats' probably the route I go in as soon as my lease is up. Fast fun car with a great interior and 35 mpg.

Granted the SCCA cars have roll cages in them but you would be amazed at the beating those cars can take. I’ve seen them barrel roll, ping across a straight away hitting multiple walls, cars, car parts with bumpers and shit flapping yet still keep the driver safe and make it back to the pits. HAHA!

I still wouldn’t be caught dead in one though. LOL!

They are all AWD except the BRZ
I only see engines. ;)

I wasn't aware the lower trim subarus were all awd. Thought it was only the STIs, cool deal.

I think an imprezza would be a good first car, manual, awd, 4wdb, not super fast, but not super slow, decent looks. Timing belts are simple to replace, change oil and brakes. Insurance is prolly pretty cheap too.

Not alot to them I was shocked when I saw one on a lift...lol

If you have a couple hours check this build out.....So cool and clean I think we would both be ok with owning this particular car...haha

Not sure on the standard imprezzas but I can tell you nothing is worse than a wrx or evo for insurance.

We’re awaiting for the higher performance mid engine Corvette. Paddle or if the stick is offered consider that.

The manual was ok on our Zo6 but a longer throw and clunkier than it shoulda been.

Even Jay Leno mentioned that about his.
In Older muscle cars the manuals are more desirable than the automatics by buyers.

Wonder if that’ll still be the case with the newer ones.

...Friend has 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel.../6 sod Manuel...10k miles...I could buy it on the cheap...but I just don’t want to shift...So I guess I will just stick w/ my 12 valve auto...

Neighbor has the same in the 3500. Tows a 21.000 lbs 5’er.
Gotta be more work than is necessary. Come to find out later the stick shift driveline version Cummins came with less HP than the automagic.

Caught him nappin at time of purchase.
Ram is bragging now the 2020 Cummins will have no EGR.
I’m a big fan of def.

Well of course the wrx/sti would be super expensive on insurance, and purchase, but the dooood likely isn't buying one of them for his daughters first car, big guy. ;)

if you have to commute for work in stupid traffic I would say a auto is easy..

funny story...
I said to the woman I want to change my 68 camaro to a stick..
she said why
I said I want to bang the gears and made shifting noises..
she said keep your auto and bang me....

I did that and keep doing that and still got my manual(m22z) built by Autogear in new York..

I probably get 1-2 calls a month from a mom quoting a WRX for there kid. Honestly 80% of the parents out there know jack squat about cars and the kids selling it as a safe awd 4 door with a great safety rating...haha

Mam that will be $2300 every 6months or $400 a month followed by the sound of somebody passing out on the other end of the phone ;):D

On a side note, they are pretty bad ass cars, and even better, I earn a decent living from them too.

I had to talk myself out of an STI, I just couldn't get over buying a foreign car and the used market hadn't caught up yet. :)

I agree they are cool....Have almost pulled the trigger a couple times. (I always wanted a wagon)

Problem with the STI is they are old and dated now. The 2.0 in the standard WRX is a better motor and they run just as hard for 15K less.

STI needs a new heart and 400hp to be relevant at it's price point.

The old motor is a dinosaur by today's standards I think it's been like 15 years since they upgraded it? I'm sure after you get done with them they are monsters but for a bolt on car the DI motors are making more power.

Sounds like this forum when it comes to small block goats.

You’ll probably get $1100 less when you sell it, it may take a little longer.
