Used to mean something, you didn’t fuck with trains as it was a huge federal offense. But we’re seeing open containers on many many trains, as well garbage left over from people stealing off them daily.

My friends that are CHP say they get robbed all the time out here.. They just open the train cars and steal 100's of thousands of shit and then leave.. And it seems most the time nobody does anything about it?

There's not much motivation to do something about it when it's all insured and a pretty small drop in the overall bucket...

You should see the tracks going into and out of East L.A. 🤣 It looks like a cardboard recycling center with all of the discarded boxes and packaging strewn about. We've called RR PD numerous times for a myriad of reasons and they're always "Unavailable." It's ridiculous.

They do something about it. I was subpoenaed to testify about a robbery attempt that I witnessed on camera. The guy confessed after seeing the video I captured.

I believe we are self insured. They do lots of crazy stuff to stop thievery and recover stolen goods. I can’t say much about how.

They’re definitely doing something… the Nike train, for example they put new crazy locks on as well those locks have moved on to other shippers, but it’s still the theory if someone wants it bad enough they will find a way.
There’s cameras at specific locations all over and getting to be more and more of them as well railroad police and Pinkerton officers more and more prevalent. Issue seems more to be the lax laws in many states not really prosecuting these people.
There’s as well a major issue with the cartels controlling a lot of the theft, at least that’s what we’re being told.

A side bar..... One of the " 60's 70's Urban legends" around my area was that guys would hop the north bound train in San Luis Obispo then make the very slow circuities ascent up Cuesta Grade which took about a half hour to 45 minutes . The "perps" knew what basic tools were required to drop out the Muncie 4 speeds from the New Chevys and toss them off to be retrieved later ................

What is the railroad police jurisdiction? What are they allowed to do? Are they just security? Or full on police officers? I always see them in Needles but never understood their role.

So it should be pretty easy to get a train horn? Asking for a friend....
Had a job that kept getting annulled because their horn kept getting stolen at night.

The sworn officers are real cops. Been told they have jurisdiction everywhere. No idea of that’s true, but they do have the power to arrest.

My uncle retired from SP Railroad 30 years ago. One of his good friends was a rail cop. Story goes that they didn’t have to answer to any jurisdictions if they were investigating something. Now that might have changed a bit now, but I bet they still have a lot of power.

I might be a dumbass, but why don’t they load 2-20’ containers with the doors butted up to each other in the center with the crane? You’d have saw the walls open to get anything out. And build a steel bulkhead at the front and back of the long sleds where the doors won’t open until craned off(besides weight)?

As Kachina boy said, they have jurisdiction anywhere the tracks are, and multi state jurisdiction on top of that. They carry side arms….. as well full tactical gear. Had some on my train about 7 years ago full AR’s night vision and some other crazy sophisticated toys. They’re not a joke at all.

That works when the shippers are using 20’s but the majority of containers that are being robbed are ones from LA to Chicago etc and those are 53’s.
A 40 in the bottom well is definitely more complicated to open up but the shippers also pay for their space and that means 40’s on top of 40’s and the ones typically getting hit are the top containers. I’d just pulling a number out of my ass, say less than 10% maybe even closer to 5% of the containers are 20’s.

When does this primarily happen in the remote areas of your route ? When trains are sitting idle awaiting a crew change or ??

Shit, remote areas? It happens everywhere in the LA basin and along the route. Train slows down and clowns hop on.
Yes, I understand what occurs in the LA Basin, that's why I specified "Remote", to better understand how it's carried out as in the case of this thread.
Trains sitting idle, trains moving 40 mph and Nike's are getting tossed with a chase vehicle picking them up ?
Having property just off Route 66, that 02HoWard26 rolls by on his normal route, I'm familiar with these seemingly mile long trains, but don't frequently see them stopped for long.

It does happen a lot out here.

We do what we can. They’re fast at it, but a U-Haul on a road that’s been closed for years near the tracks and a stopped train.. is somewhat of a dead giveaway.

BNSF PD has a looooot of area to cover and there’s only so many of them. They have some cool toys though for sure. They used one of their drones to help us look for someone just the other day.

I noticed off of Goffs Rd at Goffs had a bunch of lighting up, maybe a mile, I'd imagine for security? This was Superbowl Sunday this year. I hadn't been through there since 2020ish. That used to be my typical work commute to so cal, 3 to 4 times a month.

Even in the mid '80s, railroad security was increased at Ranchero Rd and the tracks, in Hesperia.
Just a couple of kids riding dirt bikes headed to Honda Valley after school.

Nah, people lose limbs fucking around the tracks all the time. doesn't even slow them down.

A guy goes to the pub, and says to his friend, "You won't believe what happened!
I was taking a shortcut along the railway track, and I found a girl tied to the rails. I untied her, and we had sex over and over again. All the positions; everything!"His friend replies, "That's great! Did you get a blowjob?"
"No, I couldn't find her head."

I remember the story of a guy raped someone's sister, the Vatos from Los Flats found him and tossed him under the middle of a passing train. Don't know why but that's the memory that joke conjured.

I've responded to a few pedestrian vs train calls over the years.

Last 2 where not very messy actually, and both patients lived, lost a couple of limbs though. When those trains in emergency braking mode there is a ton of heat generated and usually cauterizes the wound sites quickly

I had a guy got hit by an Amtrak doing 80. Conductor got back to check on him and the dude jumped up, yelled, "I didn't get hit by no train" and took off running. Pretty sure he had warrants, LOL.

My last guy was on pcp, walked in front of a train west bound in banning...

Train tagged him, took his right leg off at the knee, we got there and guy still hadn't processed what happened and was trying to walk. It set in when my partner was bagging the rest of the leg (which still had a shoe on it).

Come to think of it, we never did find the missing shoe from the leg intact.
