Thanks for these Jerry.
Pictures were taken at Turlock in 1972 or early 1973.
All the flatbottoms had Straight Decks, the “T” deck is about to make its debut pretty quickly.
That is the Panic Mouse we restored.
He switched to the Enderle just before he built the new “trick” bottom Hondo with the wood deck shown running at Oakland in 1973 running against the Joker in the last picture here(could have been when Bubby Wilton was building his engines)
Swabby is still in the straight deck Sanger before switching to the bubble deck.
Note in the pictures posted that PM is still running a 392 and JW is running the Elephant 426.
Great days!

Thanks to @Sharp Shooter and all others that are contributing to this thread. It's been most enjoyable viewing days gone by. They remind me of many fun summers and doing stuff that was borderline crazy. Well, maybe actually crazy.

For example, I don't think I've ever shared stories of the flat kite that my friend Benny's dad brought back from a trip to Florida around 1973. While it looked fairly simple to fly, in reality it was dangerously unstable.

The harness was just a loop around the waist, with a strap through the crotch supporting all of one's weight, and it was a bit (😁) uncomfortable. But a larger issue was the short coupling of the pilot's weight to the kite's center of gravity. That meant it was impossible to do any meaningful weight shift to steer it

It wasn't too bad flying a few feet above the water, like the video below. But what's the fun in that? We had to make a max effort, and decided running 200' of tow rope was a good idea. After reaching a height of 40-50 feet, the kite would begin oscillating back and forth in a pattern that far exceeded the width of the boat wake, and sometimes do a halfass wingover that resulted in the kite and victim hitting the water almost upside down.

Undaunted, we would retrieve the pilot from the water, fortify him with another beer, and line up for another go.

😁

Hey I saw this boat for sale.. any more info on it ?
Yeah, I semi rerigged it a couple years ago.
It’s a former K boat with a Revenge bottom and a D’Cucci deck.
Boat worked good for the Enduro with a small block but really needs some big power to work really well as it is fully foamed from bow eye to transom
I think they have a non refundable down payment but it has not officially been sold.
I drove it for about an hour or so before it dropped a valve seat.
It would make a fantastic river boat as it is pretty bulletproof.

I wonder if that's Billy Cremo's old boat? Love the tow vehicle!
Could be.
Boy, was he a beauty!
Looked like the rigging had been re-anodized recently.
Cool river boat.
Looked like it ran 85-90.
Shoulda got some pictures of the van.
Super cool.

When I had it it would run 84.99 mph never went 85! Lol single carb 125 over 427 oval port heads square port matched with a 292 hyd comp cam. Wasn't real fast but pretty quick and fun to drive! Tim

Is this a boat you are familiar with? I noticed it was for sale a while back. Just over the border from me in Spokane Washington. Had another boat, (Hull), available also. Just curious
My nephew sent it to me, he lives in Ennis, MT. I'm not familiar with the boat, but told him $30k seemed a little steep

Is that the Lavey Craft trunk model ,"Sweet Carolina" circle boat? Good looking piece.

It is listed as a 1975 Laveycraft Circle Boat.
That is an excellent circle boat with many wins and championships to its credit. It was driven by the master Paul Grichar (rip) for many of those titles. If it's fresh w/ good BB power it could very well be worth the asking to a serious circle racer buyer.

He was curious about it because he likes my 67 Lavey, and wanted my opinion.

Sweet Caroline was always a sore spot with Grich.
When we talked about it he said that he completely helped set the boat up(he was one of the best) and got it working really well and then when it came to running the kilo, the owners put Gordy Jennings in it because he was a “drag racer”!😂
They went out a set the record for the SK class.
Gordy also drove it in the circle races for a bit after that.

I heard a rumor that Wade sold this property? Any one have the inside scoop on this? I heard this third party and I don’t want to spread a rumor if it’s not true.

Wade informed of this when I was out there in Oct. Testing before the thx gvg regatta.

It's true, however, he has an agreement w/ new owner to continue the new years day event some time into the future. So this year is a go and he's looking forward to it as he always does.

Yeah, sadly, he told me the same thing when we were out there testing.
It was always an ez goto for us.
The New Years event was always fun too…sad to think this will probably be the last one 😥
