The Government yesterday announced a Commission of Investigation will be established on foot of a 'truly shocking' scoping inquiry that uncovered 2,400 allegations of sexual abuse in over 300 religious schools over four decades.

Some survivors expressed the view that 'a paedophile ring was operating' in their school, with multiple staff members involved in either carrying out or facilitating sexual abuse.

The scoping inquiry report, conducted by barrister Mary O'Toole, was commissioned last year following revelations of sexual abuse at Blackrock College in Dublin. Speaking yesterday, the Taoiseach said the abuse 'is a shadow of our past that continues to loom large in so many lives, so many families, so many communities'. Noting the report recommended redress be paid to survivors, the Fine Gael leader said: 'It's really important that we get the structure right and that the next steps that we take are absolutely survivor-centred.
'I want to say this on behalf of the Government, and I want to say this on behalf of the people of Ireland: We will get this right.'

Education Minister Norma Foley called the report 'a harrowing document' that 'contains participants' descriptions of appalling sexual abuse and violence'.
She added: 'This includes abuse being perpetrated in front of other children. Many of the survivors who participated in the scoping inquiry are now older.

Gardaí are now bracing themselves for a deluge of fresh allegations, security sources have told the Mail.

Some survivors expressed the view that 'a paedophile ring was operating' in their school, with multiple staff members involved in either carrying out or facilitating sexual abuse.

The allegations included 820 claims against the Christian Brothers, 321 against the Spiritans, 295 against the Brothers of Charity and 142 against the Jesuits.

Gardaí, having reviewed their files in relation to five out of the nine most prolific schools, found there are currently 17 ongoing investigations.

Former childcare worker Ashley Paul Griffith has confessed to committing 307 sexual offences against dozens of children under his care in Brisbane and Italy between 2007 and 2022.

Griffith, 46, from the Gold Coast, pleaded guilty to all charges at an arraignment at the Queensland district court on Monday morning.

He was formally convicted of offences committed at childcare centres where he worked between January 2007 and August 2022.

They include 190 charges of unlawful and indecent dealing with a child under 12 under his care, 28 counts of rape, 67 counts of making child exploitation material, four counts of producing child exploitation material and a count of distributing child exploitation material. He was also charged with possessing child exploitation material between 2005 and 2022, using a carriage service for that purpose.

A sentencing date for Griffith has yet to be set, but he will appear again at the district court for a mention on 9 September.

During the six-week trial, the Ontario superior court heard testimony from five complainants who said during a period between the late 1980s to about 2005 Nygard had attacked them in a private bedroom suite on the top floor of the building.

Canadian police arrested Nygard in late 2020 at the request of the United States, where he was accused of using his businesses to lure women and girls to sexually gratify himself and his associates.

He is fighting extradition to the US, where he faces federal charges in New York for nine offences including conspiracy to commit racketeering, transportation of a minor for purpose of prostitution, and sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion.
