KInda like the "minibago" this was kinda of a joke thing 22 years ago . It was 7 days before the goodguys puyallup show and the car I had planned to take was suddenly down with a bent axle ( curb, drunk, pussy you know the story ) it was a 36 chevy coupe with enough stereo to amass me many noise violations . This was a great time in my life , my shop was the SHOP to go to in washington state if you wanted anything airbagged and custom painted , sema trucks , company trucks, imports ,fords ,hot rods you name it we were kicking ass and at the time getting more press then anyone else in the state so life was good and I had an awesome group of young guys helping me. So faced with the dilemma of nothing cool for goodguys cruising This little project got started and finished in 4 quick days.
I had this very stock, rust free ,running rambler wagon sitting in stoarge. My quickly devised plan was to grab a bunch of airlift parts off the shelves and drop it on the ground and go with it !
Everything changed drastically when I headed to town to find some sort of picnic basket to hide 2 five gallon airtanks in. first stop was Pier One Imports looking for a basket which I found 2 of to my liking , while there I spied a bin full of bamboo sticks and my mind started taking off , I knew the one thing I did not have for the car was a grille. now that my mind was quickly putting things together It just kept blossoming into the creation you see here.
Prior to the minibago this was the funnest ( not fastest, loudest ,lowest etc ) car i had created and had social media been around then i am sure it would have made the rounds. When I returned to the shop that day with my load of bamboo , twine ,flowered tapestry, rattan baskets and floor mats my guys said " So we are going Gilligan style huh " what can i say ! seems like everyone involved had something unique to add to the build.. Once I made the grille i was super stoked at how it looked and decided to go back to pier one and get some of the big bamboo i had seen , the bigger stuff I cut down the middle and countersunk mounting screws while hiding them with crossed twine to make side molding. For the paint I chose 2 different volkswagon colors and added a very cool mica gold flake I had been using alot of , somewhere during the paint process I decided a cool touch would be to airbrush bamboo shoots coming up from the bottom and my shop logo on the tailgate.
While this was going on in my shop I dropped all interior off at the guys that were doing most of my stuff ( guys around town were pretty good about jumping in on my projects as I was getting press for all involved) and just begged for the best they could due in 3 days. The suspension was super simple as it had leaves in the rear and and a mustank type front a arm arrangment similar to a mustang where we were able to put the bag above the upper a arm and secure to body , i had a new set and probably the first set of superior 18" steel 5 spokes sitting in the lobby and by god they had the slotted lug hole for universal fit and they actaully bolted right on.. those wheels were heavier then the rest of the car ! So the car got done in 4 days and was popular, funny cool and a blast to drive around.
From the debut at Goodguys that year until it was his a guy ( a friend now) was addamant about owning it , I told him when I was done enjoying it I would call him . Four years later he got that call and he has owned it ever since . When I want to see it i go to the Seaside Oregon wheels and waves show and there it is.. I had always thought i would buy it back but the last time I saw it we walked up on it and my girlfriend then had never seen it so as she was checking it out I was talking to the owner and his 2 young boys were showing her all the details when she stopped them and said "Do you know who your dad is talking to ? thats the guy that built it " their little jaws dropped. That car has been in those boys life their whole lifes (10-12 ) and after watching those boys proudly showing their family cruiser to her I decided right then I would never pull that car from that family ! just goes to show some of the best things in life are unplanned.
