I retired June of this year and was at the top of the pay schedule. It took me 25 years to approach $100K and you don't do that without a Master's degree. However for many, many years now I have been paying $2K out of pocket for medical and dental insurance as Corona-Norco teachers wanted $$$ put towards salaries instead of benefits. I think starting pay was around $50K back in the 90's when I started. In retirement I am seeing about 70% of that but no social security. Some will think teachers are overpaid, some will think they are not. Both my parents were life long educators, so I knew what kind of a living teaching was going to afford me. But I also knew that I would have more time for family instead of working holidays and weekends or frequent traveling out of town. My sister makes 7 figures but she is away from home a lot. I didn't want that for myself. I worked sales and I worked construction before teaching, and learned that the ups and downs of those paychecks was not how I wanted to live my life either.

But to the point of the thread here . . .

Frankly I cannot imagine how you could continue to lead a classroom of kids who know you are producing soft or hard porn. There would always be certain kids who would never give you any kind of respect knowing that about you. It would also minimize your ability to counsel kids 1 on 1 and destroy any kind of perceived authority that an adult needs to have working with kids. I spent years trying to convince kids that the world needs young people with strong morals and that respect is so very hard to regain once lost. Kids today get kicked around a lot at home and teachers need to be a place that they can look to for not just an answer, but the right answer. Teachers need to be people that kids can hold in high regard. Kids don't listen to people they don't respect. Simple as that.

When I went to high school at a pretty well known westlake private school, the pastor at the adjoining church got popped for an affair with a partitioner.

I've mixed emotions about this thread; I even hesitate to participate.

Producing anything for personal gain on school district property should be treated equally. It seems like a conflict of interest.

I'm not a Bible thumper, but in the last five years, the degradation of our society's moral compass has accelerated. It is no wonder the fabric of our country is tattered and frayed. The things I see women doing on IG alone makes me wonder how it's OK to post that stuff, but you can't debate, offer opposing views, or share conservative values. I ask myself daily why I am still using these platforms, which are not making my life much better at this point. What will it take for us to turn it off and walk away?

Angie was a teacher for most of our marriage. It pissed me off how much non-contracted time she spent working with zero comp. When I work harder, I influence my bonus and merit increases. When Teachers work harder, they get nothing, only the unions determine when a pay increase happens, and it's collective. Angie spent our money buying classroom supplies, I was also against that, but she did it anyway because she felt it was the right thing to do.

My Daughter is an HS math teacher. The kids seem entirely out of control without parental or administration support. The good kids are getting penalized because all kids must be treated equally. For the time being, she needs the job, but I suspect she will change careers soon, and I support her leaving her education career behind. The pay is shit, and the working conditions are unacceptable.

I'm thankful my kids are adults, but I worry about the next generation of kids WE are raising. Home school seems the path forward. I would not trust my kids to these incompetent excuses for educators. We are getting what we pay for. Crap!
