100% dead on.I went through this a couple of years ago. The IRS let an old debt sit idle until I got healthy, then magically appeared, lol. How do they know? Anyway, save your money on a tax attorney. The IRS is unbelievably easy to deal with. I spent 10k on a very well recommended, $350.00 an hour guy. 5K up front.
The bottom line is this, if you have anything, and I mean anything of value, you have 2 choices. Sell everything and give the money to the IRS, then negotiate, or set up a payment plan (you won't like their terms) or just write them a check for the full amount and be done. OK, 3 choices.
Call the IRS, get a case worker and work with them. The IRS doesn't want to shut you down or sweep your bank accounts, then they get nothing, they need to keep you healthy. They do this every day so you aren't going to bullshit you. If you owe them money they already are looking at your accounts and your partner and spouse etc. Don't try to get tricky and hide shit, that takes it to another level where the rules don't apply, to them at least, they have one job and are brutally efficient.
Forget the lawyers, apply that money to your first installment.
