"Walt" sure seems to be in a lot of these stories.
Read the book "skunk works". Awesome book telling the tale of what happened in the building of the A12/Sr-71, amongst other aircraft.

2,193.13 mph is the official record, set in July of 1976 to celebrate America?s bicentennial. This image is that plane landing after achieving the speed record.
Could be a YF-12 also.
The YF, I thought, was the attack version. Designed with nuclear warhead capabilities and was developed for the CIA.
Either that's a reconnaissance drone or it's the vessel that the warhead rides on [emoji2]
Very cool either way.
I'll have to check it out.
It's a magnificent plane that was built way ahead of its time and not using much of anything we had learned to that point about aviation.
That book also tells the story of the nighthawk and how everyone thought it wouldn't work, even Kelly Johnson.
The built a model of the F117 and perched it atop a pole at dreamland during testing. They had every radar at that place pointed at it and looking for it.
Big 3 star general spotted it within mins from the radar room stating "that's all you boys got, this is the big time, come back when your ready to play, or something along those lines. Skunk works guys asked "ya sure, that's all you see?".
Yes, the plane is right there, bright as day.
"General, that's the pole that the airplane is sitting on, not the airplane itself"
Needless to say the general was furious and demanded skunks make the pole disappear like the plane, which skunk works later did.
The Museum Of Flight in Seattle has a variant made in 63 designed to carry a drone into hostile territory. Its pretty cool, looks the same but has a drone on top.
The plane here: http://www.museumofflight.org/aircraft/lockheed-m-21-blackbird
the drone here: http://www.museumofflight.org/aircraft/lockheed-d-21b-drone
They initially built a smaller scale manned test version of the F117, and the program was known as "have blue" - which ment nothing....it was just 2 randomly chosen words picked to name the secret development program. That book also tells the story of the nighthawk and how everyone thought it wouldn't work, even Kelly Johnson.

Today is the 51st anniversary of the first flight of the Blackbird. The A-12 flew prior, but this was the SR-71' big day.

I believe this is the A12 with a drone mounted on its back.

That little birdie on top has a lot of development roots in Beaumont Ca. Area is still closed to public. Found out the hard way last year.
Seeing it perform live was an awesome experience. Been going to my local show since the 70's, only missed a few years. By far my favorites are the SR-71, F-14 and when Russia showed up in 89 with a Mig 29 and SU-27.

Suck. Squeeze. Bang. Blow.
Family friend was an engineer involved in development of SR. . He designed the engine stand for static engine testing and monitoring. He mentioned how crazy the engine was. He said the weirdest part of the engine was that it became translucent when it came up to operating temperature. You could actually see the outline of a person on the other side of the engine.... He used the term "spooky"... I would tend to agree....
A good set up turbo is the same way.
