Anyone been there to eat lately? We were trying to eat at Owen’s bistro, but they are closed for private events for the next two weekends. Sad about that since it’s close and good. We had someone recommend Sycamore inn, but then another person said it was horrible.

They do have my favorite cocktail- the aviation. Not a lot of restaurants make it. Might try some place in Claremont if sycamore inn isn’t recommended. Is it similar to northwoods?

It’s hit and miss. Not like what it was years ago.

Claremont could have been Tutti Mangia.

AGREED!

good happy hour, presentation is good, but if you have a high standard, you might leave wishing for better. Tutti Mangia is the SPOT! great drinks and Menu... King Crab legs are the best add on value. Bar Dot is pretty good, menu is too fluffy for me, but great drinks and atmosphere.. love that town!

Last time I was in tutti Mangia my bill was close to $500 for three people, it caught me a bit by suppose, I guess there’s an ass for every seat as the saying goes.

Not surprising..

It was $285 for my wife and myself and had a few cocktails.... Again I just spent $142 on a post softball dinner for our family of 5 two weeks ago.... with two beers each for mom and I... It's just not cheap wherever you go...

Not saying it’s cheap, but neither is Sycamore Inn. Add a bottle of wine and a couple of $20 cocktails shit adds up.

For me, I would eat at Vince’s across from Sycamore Inn. 1/2 order spaghetti dinner with a glass of wine for $20 sounds good to me.

We love Owens Bistro, have you tried Chase’s, I think it’s in LaVerne.

You could try Cask n Cleaver just down the street. Very similar to Sycamore inn and owned by the same family I recently learned. We've been to CnC a couple times over the last yr.+ and the food quality was good and service was pretty good. We've had both family groups there and just wife and I.

This!

We go to C&C fairly regularly. The service there is top notch. Most of the servers have been there for years and years, and most of em are family too!

Went to try out SI recently, and not only did the service suck, the food was Way over priced. 🤬

I have no problem paying first class money for a first class product. C&C will not disappoint. 👍🏼

Check into this after the first of the year...

Will try C&C... there are never any reservations available...so that has pushed us off a bit, when we call about walkins, its sounds like the DMV its so busy. Will make the effort.

I've been to all except Owens. All solid contenders. Can't go wrong with any of them.

I think Sycamore Inn is only worth it for happy hour. I usually get the Shepards pie. For the regular prices I would rather go somewhere else.

Love Vince’s. We are going to have Vince’s catered for a family Christmas party. Always good!

I've heard the "Meat Cellar" on Foothill in Claremont is pretty good, but only if you like spending $300- $400 for a couple. Also in Upland is Nuno's Bistro, which is pretty special, considering it is in a strip mall setting. We had 6 in our party and spend $850 pretty quickly, but the food is great.

Just can't do Vinces.... That place is so packed and busy, but for me, I am into the meatier/thicker sauce and for me, Vinces sauce is marginal. There is a huge following for them and we live so close by I wish we would enjoy it.

I think I’m looking for something a little more this weekend like you stated. If sycamore is even similar to northwoods in any way-My husband is going to look at me that we should have just went there and got the cheese bread/salad with his steak. The drinks at northwoods just aren’t great for me.

We have been spoiled by getting beef from Joel that we have become picky eating out. But, I really want a fun night out.

So maybes it’s Tutti mangia. The place looks nice. We tried to go Aruffos last year in Claremont and the wait was so long.

We have yet to find something as good as cicciottis in Carlsbad locally.

I think we still have gift cards to Cask n Clevers. It was always good.

I will look that up. Never heard about Chase’s. Might need to add that to the list.

We ask for extra meat sauce on the side and thicken it up at home. I wouldn’t like it as much without getting the extra sauce.

Went a couple weeks ago. Food was great as usual but the service this past time was aweful. I had to track down the server every time we wanted something.

Tutti in Claremont is better IMO.

Cask N Cleaver is nothing fancy, but the service there is always so good.

I’ve been meaning to try out the arroyo chophouse in Pasadena, heard the steak is best on west coast, we’ll see.

Anyone been there?

Definitely a fantastic place to eat. Has that old feel as well.

Never got the draw. Had it about once a year for someone’s birthday. It was always decent but never sought it out on my own.

Aruffos is good too. Tutti is a little more upscale. Both are on the list for entertaining customers.

Sycamore in has always been good when i go. It was much better than my experience at Duanes at the mission inn. Just had Owens Bistro last week. Was very impressed and thats one of the new go to spots for me.

Fun fact on the Sycamore Inn. My grandfather who was born in 1902 and immigrated from the Philippines in the 1920s was the cook and purchasing agent at the Sycamore Inn for 20 years in the 1950s through the late 1960s!
Was it haunted then? I have heard some crazy stories about down stairs. LOL

Well…we are at aruffo’s. We were too early for tutti. 445pm. He wakes up at 2am for work so he got home early. Walked right in and so far everything is excellent. Might do some drink hopping on this street. Robert doesn’t drink so it will just be me enjoying the drinks!

Ok.. so one more cheesy post about Sycamore Inn… my grandfather chef knife from the restaurant in the 50s. It’s
a dexter and literally still in use in my kitchen. it’s almost gone, I can’t image how much thicker it was 70 years ago!

Here's an interesting little piece of info about the SI the waiter at C&C told us last week. There is a basement there and back in the early years of the building it was a brothel and it has a jail cell down there for the drunk and unrully patrons. Apparently you can request a tour of the basement.

Oh wow! That is very interesting! I’ll have to ask the next time we go there.

That’s very cool that you have the knife! We are going to go there on a midweek night to check it out.

Just to toss this out, but if you want great food on a cheap budget, try Aldolino's Italian Restaurant in Azusa, at the little strip mall at Cerritos/Arrow Hwy. Great inexpensive wines and cocktails, with awesome daily specials. Their specials usually include Chilean Sea Bass for ~$35.

lol....I certainly do, real good guy. As I recall he was the area or general kitchen mgr. or something like that. And before you ask, I remember Bob Brink too though I had very little/if any actual interaction w/ him. haha Those were some pretty good times. I was "kitchen scum" haha the grill monster. That job taught me how to cook/eat fairly well for myself seeing as how I was a bachelor until my 40's.

Haha....I just read the article. That's cool he built the engine himself. Sounds like it was a very nice ride. I guess he was promoted shortlty after the article was written because he was above that position when I was there. Guy named Bill ??? Was the kitchen mgr. then.
I wonder if he still owns the stang? I wonder what he went on to do after the C&C co. job.
Was he a vidographer too at that time? I don't recall ever seeing that car or even hearing about it. What a shame.
