I see so many of these things around now and got friends buying them left and right.

I would never buy one, as I think they are death traps, but was wondering what kind of depreciation hit these things take.

For example, I just saw a 2018 4 seater CanAm for sale @ $28k and that is around what they cost new. Is this guy just reaching for the stars in order to pay off the loan or do they really hold value like that??

Also....for shits and giggles I went to Temecula Motorsports and could have taken one home with nothing out of pocket......[emoji54][emoji54][emoji54]

Stock ones seem to get good money.
Modified ones seem not to pull much more. Maybe the fear those have been beaten hard. IDK but even comments in threads here indicate the same.....comments like: buy a nice used stock one that hasn't been beat to death.

I think the SXSs are financed more than everyone let’s on. It doesn’t make sense why people would ask almost new pricing on a 1-2 year old toy.

Like you said you can buy them with no money down. You can keep making the payments or cut the bank a $5k check. My guess is that people just keep making payments.

Oh heck yeah, tons are financed for sure. It is stupid easy. Literally a 5 minute credit application, approved and could have been in and out of the dealership within an hour with a $33k "car".........

Miles are huge. Under 1000 miles seems to pull good money. 2/3k. Moderate. 4/5k and up, people seem to really shy away. Sad that these things have a shelf life of 5000 miles.

Especially when you put on 1200 a year. I’m on track to put 1000 on mine this year alone

They hold their value pretty well from purchase price to used sale because most people dump a ton of money on their build and then the next step up is a bunch of money up for the latest and greatest.

Total money in to money out is a good size spread. But like most things recreation, it’s more about $$$/smile than $/mile.

Yeah. 1000 miles is 10/15 rides. It goes quick.

Plus I imagine they can roll in all the dealership upgrades as well right?

I’m all for using the bank’s money while you invest yours at a greater return. But if you effectively have no skin in the game then why are you selling?

I guess if you can get someone to bite then you got a cheap rental for the year or can roll into the latest and greatest of this year.

Yup, I could have walked with a CanAm. Had a upgraded cage, windshield, tires/wheels, seats, belts.....etc.

I would never buy one........ever. Not a fan.

My buddy has 13,000 on his. Still a sealed motor and trans. He owns a Baja tour company and does monthly runs to Cabo. He also owns a company that services them.

If you’re smoking these things in 5k miles you’re not keeping up on the maintenance as well as you could.

Most people don’t realize how expensive the after purchase maintenance can/will be and don’t do much beyond changing the engine oil.

Not lately......lol

If you bought a Magic deck boat in 2008, it is worth more now than when you bought it....

You just dismantled any point I was trying to make in one single sentence lol

I would’ve never guessed that a smart investment would’ve been a dozen Magic’s 10 years ago and just sitting on them haha

Also the value goes down when the next latest and greatest comes out. Canam started with the commander, then the maverick and now the x3 maverick

I would never insure one. It blows me away that anyone will.
I am shocked that insurance isn't astronomical on them. I have heard of people getting some really good rates.

Its about 400 a year for FULL street and dirt coverage. Accident, injury, prop damage. Just like a vehicle

You’d have spent so much maintaining and storing a dozen Magic deckboats for a decade, you’d barely come out even.

Yeah, that's what I have heard. Not bad at all.

I pay $250/year for insurance (including street use) on a 1000 RZR.

Joe the key to not loosing money on a SXS is buy one lightly used that is 2 years old. There are thousands of them sitting in garages with 5k+ in upgrades that have a couple hundred miles.

You can get a really nice used RZR 4 seater for $18-$22k depending on 1000 or Turbo and what has been done to it.

Upgrades are worth 25 cents on the dollar, and that is where you will really lose on depreciation. But that is the cost of buying one already done from the dealer all done and paying their markup for the mods.

If you are getting 5k miles out of a SXS you are doing it wrong. They will go way longer than that, but need a little maintenance like any offroad car.

I’ve never had one with more than 1500 miles or so. I’m strictly talking about resale value.

If it's financed you would have to.
If you're talking as an insurer then I agree with you.
I’m taking from as an insurer.
As far as financing toys goes, I don’t do that either.

I am waiting until the season is over to begin to search for a replacement to my 2014 XP4 1000. It was low miles and sold well. Not sure what I am going to replace it with but it still needs to have 4 seats. This winter I am using my 450 LTR Suzuki if the boys want to go out in the desert with their RZRs.

Agreed. The “shelf life” term was the confusing part.

And yes, the market is flooded with sub 1000 mile SXS, so higher mileage will generally be worth less.

I just meant shelf life as in value if you own one. If you own one and advertise a unit with 5k miles or better, it better be sanitary clean and priced aggressively or it’s not selling.
