I'm sure new very strict bldg regulations will be in place before the 1st permit is issued.

Unless you’ve dealt with the California coastal commission and their regulations, don’t get anywhere near the beach. That’s a two-year nightmare in itself.
Most house builds will require you to have an ADU or build additional “low income housing” on another lot.

If you need any wood shutters, I’ve got a guy.

We lost a whole row of ~16 high end homes we did the cabinets in in Altadena. I wonder if they will rebuild with the same exact plans as they had only been closed on less than a year

Probably if they will let them use existing plans and bypass plan check and building and safety.

As you guys know, I’m no Contractor but I visit Maui often I will guarantee you it’ll take at least a year to collect all the debris from those houses EPA AQMD, etc., is going to be involved.

So here’s what Lahaina did they built two offsite locations. They took all the crap and put it on huge dump trucks brought it up to the locations, all with the proper respirators and suits and separated the stuff that need to be recycled or not ground up. Then decided what they’re going do with it after that

. I watched it going on for the last year. They’re building houses now, here’s a couple of screenshots I got off of Google maps looking at the two sites that they’re using for separation of all the debris. I thought it was a pretty wise plan.

I wouldn’t be surprised if federal government stepped in and cut a check to get everything going and set up the separation areas just to get the ball rolling and look for a little payment later on. If they don’t, it’ll be five years till they clean all these individual lots.

Honestly, I am wondering if a new landfill we be created. I don't know where the they can take this stuff. Not to mention south coast aqmd is one of if not the most strict. Nothing will move will out there hands on it.

We had a big conference call today about this as we are in this industry. People are freaking out and I am trying to explain that the bulk of this work is not happening now. What we will be getting is mostly soot and ask and odor claims..this will be worked from the outside in. There will be inexperienced disaster companies that go out of business as they will be buying a bunch of shit they don't need right now.

Sounds like if you stay within the existing envelope your exempts or fast tracked through coastal commission stuff during a disaster. I had to deal with them on an addition a few years back, there was some quirky things to navigate, but we prevailed in the end.

My buddy jeff bought a property 3 years back on the coast up north, he went in and started clearing some growth and removed a tree. The spot wheee the tree stump was did not get filled back in and when it rains it filled with water, the coastal commission denied his building permits and called the area a wetland. CLUSTER FUCK of epic levels 🤦‍♂️

I’m sure I will be hot mopping some of these rebuilds. But by the time they get building I may also be out of the trade.

Right now I only do part time.

Adversity breeds opportunity. My buddy lost a few houses in palisades, name of the game now is to be first through plan check as this is gonna be a cluster fuck of strained resources. Debris is still smoldering and the architect is now in motion. I’m considering taking on a PM role, but for now just helping my pal line up some ducks. Stating by putting together a sub list, if you’re in the trades and would like to be on the list let’s talk. I worked the northridge earth quake in 94 and have seen how this situation will play out before, the next 18-36 months is gonna be rather spectacular for SoCal based trades. Between my buddy and some of his friends there are about 15 residential total losses that need to be rebuilt, this isn’t even a pimple on the ass of what the total losses are in SoCal.

There is gonna be some bad shit that goes down with people being underinsured and the Gypsy scammer contractors who are now traveling in from around the country to scam folks and haul ass with deposits, it’s fucking on right now and the shit show is just begining. You have a lot of high net worth savvy folks who are moving in a direction to be first in line to get their property rebuilt, pretty unique situation playing out in real time. Feel free to shoot me PM if you’re a sub that will go to palisades.

For now I have the demo/hazmat heavy equipment stuff lined up when it’s time to move on that, we’ll see how that process plays out. My thoughts are that is gonna be a mass coordinated deal where you push the crap out to the street and it gets scooped up and hauled off.
Four or five years ago I had a few buddys that did this after the big fires and it was a nightmare due to all of Californias green policies. The hauloffs had to go to special stations and all the soil had to be either cleaned of contaminates or removed and replaced with fresh soil. This along with a log jam getting permits sucked the life from them .
Hopefully they are able to streamline things this time . There’s definitely not enough skilled labor available to rebuild those homes in a timely manor . It will be insanely challenging . I see massive building inflation headed our way .
