Hey RDP peeps- I know it's a longshot but figured I would post.

My brother-in-law had his 2000 midnight blue BMW M5 MPLAID stolen in broad daylight from his house in Arcadia yesterday. Car is unique and is 1 of 29 manufactured according to my brother-in-law and only has 70k original miles.

Super surprised the car was stolen in broad daylight right in front of his house within his neighborhood. He filed a police report, police informed him that they will do a review of video surveillance within the neighborhood. We realize this just happened yesterday, but unfortunately, he is kind of getting the runaround and it seems as though his case is not getting much traction and he is scared the car will end up down south.

Please see the attached pictures any help is always greatly appreciated!

Anywhere in the SGV, from El Monte to East L.A., would be my primary focus.

I just saw a M5 kind of like that parked in the Irvine train station parking garage today. It had a dented area in front of the drivers door. I'll go back after work and check the plate.

This car will be vin switched or stripped for various parts. Some of the parts I believe even the fenders are very unique, and these are extremely popular cars now and highly collectible.
Replacement parts are available, but from Germany only and they’re crazy, expensive figure 6 months to get anything major for parts
Let’s hope for the best, but this is probably not gonna turn out very well.

Checked again, still stolen and no lpr hits.
Thanks for checking, hoping for the best but not looking so good.

Question- I have never dealt with a stolen vehicle situation. My BIL called the local Police yesterday trying to get an update and they told him there was no update they were waiting for the plate to come up on a license plate scan, is that normal? Seems like weeks, months, years could go by without any activity. Realizing it's a long shot and also realize there is other crime they are focusing on, I thought they might look into any video footage they might have to better determine where to look for the stolen car. If thats the approach, it kind of leaves you hanging with the empty sense of hope that they are looking for the car when in reality they aren't and only relying in license plate reads or tips.

Bummer.

These cars have a following and are climbing in value. It will be parted out as most of the parts are highly desirable. Everything from interior parts to mechanical. And I mean all of the parts.

I just sold one last week that was of the same vintage, it was 1 of 12 produced and shipped to the US.

My BIL called last night to let me know they found his BMW abandonded in Rosemead which is less than 10 miles from his house. According to the police the car appears to be intact with no damage. He hasnt physically seen it yet becasue they are holding onto it to gather more eveidence, but he is hoping to pick it up soon.
Sounds like some punk just wanted to take it for a joy ride...

MIght be time to hide some air tags....

Don't do air tags, an iPhone will let the criminal know that an air tag is following them. Get a different system. Glad he got it back

wow, did not think that it would be found. Back in the day my mother had a Honda 4 door. It was barley driven and in incredible condition after 15+ years. One day it was stolen from Ala Moana and never seen again. I think that it only have about 30k miles in all those years. Surely was parted out as Hondas are so desirable in Hawaii.

Truly shocked but pleasantly surprised. There must be more to story cuz this car isn't something a local drug thug can simply hotwire for a joyride. 🤔

I mentioned this before. Connects to your current alarm. You can track your car, remote start and stop, will live stream mph and more. It tells you if someone bumps or hits the car with 4 levels of impact from a car backfiring to a door ding etc.

Lucky man, and trap auto theft taskforce is involved. Might be more to this.
So what does that task force do/look for, are they a different specialty than others?
